A few considerations:
1) Positional scarcity is a big deal, but not too big a deal. I think that means Delgado drops out of a top five FA list. It is possible to put together a 1B platoon for <3 mm that will provide production within 2 wins. Call 2 wins $4 mm, if Delgado signs for >$7mm, you could spend money more wisely. However, it also means that Cabrera and Renteria can't be valued too highly. Renteria perhaps is worth significant $$, if you project him to be in 2002-03 self. Cabrera only if you think his defense is back to the pre-back injury times. 2) Defense and non-OBP/SLG offense (e.g., base running, decision making, non GIDP, etc.) has a value. And, Beltran is the king of hte hill, there. His defense is very good, his baserunning is about a win above just about anybody, and his decision making is graet... it is just that Drew's is about as good with more power/OB skills. Those two, top my list of OFers, with a 3rd baseman in third. 3) Defense is a big deal and getting to be bigger. Defense is starting to be valued, publically, at higher rates. Beltre is a top notch defensive 3b, perhaps the best in the game -- up there with Chavez and Rolen, iirc. There may be none better, or at least only two. That adds about $3-5mm of value to his deal. If you think of him as a .350/.550 hitter, I think that is worth at least $5mm. He could be a .370/600 hitter, which is another 1-2 wins of value. And he is so young. I'm salivating.
