Post Albert Belle Corks his Bat

I was wondering if anyone else saw this article on ESPN.com

<a href="http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/0425/1373638.html" target="_blank">http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/0425/1373638.html</a>

I think it's pretty interesting actually. I always thought alot of baseball players corked there bats. I mean what do they get if they get caught? A couple game suspension. But for a guy who is trying to make a name for himself 20 points in your average, a few extra homers and extra base hits can sure make your stock rise and get you a big contract. I guess I'm asking how many of you think that baseball players cheat. Like do you think pitchers still doctor the ball a little? Again if your a guy trying to make a name for yourself, I'm sure there is that urge to add a lil movement with some sandpaper or whatever they use. I think cheating is a little more prevelant then we think. WOndering what you all thought.

I agree - I'll bet it's much more prevalent than we think.

IMO we are best off abandoning that sinking ship that is Off Topic to the rats infesting it and just starting a whole new Baseball Forum from scratch.

Or how about that time he took Fernando Vina out,he pratically closelined him. I would still have a headache from that 1, Vina is one tough guy.

And then of course we have October 31st, another great day in the Belle saga. Only this time he was at home and when some tricker treaters came to the door and Mr. Millionare didnt have any candy they egged his house... Cleveland kidz are bold like that LoL. So what does Albert do, he gets in his Ford Explorer and hits one of them...

Classic headcase, hell of a job hitting 50 homers and 50 doubles that 1 year though, even if his bat was a couple ounces short.

...now there is a case of a corked bat having a disastrous impact.

I don't usually listen to Jim Rome, however I happened to tune in today while another show was in commercial. Apparently Belle called in yesterday very pissed, denying the corked bats, basically ridiculing Vizquel ("He couldn't even hit until they put his a[/i]ss in front of mine in the lineup") and questioning Vizquel's integrity ("Did he put anything in the book about all his tramps on the road?").

Now, that I can believe from Albert. Personally, I don't think he needed a corked bat and, if he used one, its history now and irrelevant.

Albert Belle is my least favorite athlete of all-time in any sport!

Karl Malone is a distant second <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I was glad when he took down Vina... Vina annoys me, I think most Cubs fans find him annoying as well.

Albert Belle ? Well, don't you REALLY mean Joey Belle or has everyone forgotten that he changed his name ??

I guarantee you the fans in Boston haven't as they made it a ritual to chant "Joey" when he'd play left field. I can remember watching him get so pissed off at the fans chanting that he threw 2 balls over the Green Monster. (1 was a HR that rolled out of the net that he faked like he was going to toss it in the stands before launching it outta the park) and the other was the last out of an inning..

HEADCASE ?? I'd say so...

Chas</strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Sure, and nobody ever changes. That's the way life is. I'm sure you're exactly the same guy you were ten years ago.

Sure, Joey (Albert Jojuan Belle is his full name, although I may have spelled Jojuan wrong), was a headcase with a lot of anger issues, and basic maturitiy issues when he entered the league. If I remember correctly, he is also a recovering alcoholic, and the reason the whole "throwing the ball into the guy's chest" incident happened was that the guy was riding him the whole game about going to a keg party after the game or something similar. Hey, I'd get pissed, too. Was Joey/Albert's response appropriate? No, not really, I'm sure the idiot in the stand's karma would have caught up with him eventually. OTOH, was it understandable? No question. Albert/Joey is only human.

He learned from that incident and others. Part of his adapting was to close into himself, to not be a friendly guy (see entry under "Murray, Eddie"). And the media hates guys who don't kiss their ass[/i]es, so he got a bad reputation, and every little thing he did was overblown.

I'm not here to canonize Albert, because I don't think he deserves that. Yet to say he is a headcase for what he did early in his career is to say he never changed. Hell, our own president (allegedly, of course) snorted lots of coke in the old days, and people thought he had changed enough to make him a good president. Why shouldn't Albert be accorded the same respect?

Did he cork his bat? I don't know and I don't care, because they aren't going to go back and replay the games and I've got more important things to worry about in my life.

It took effort, but I made a permanent change in my life and no I'm not the same person I was.

Being an Indians fan, I feel the need to defend Belle. He was a great player, and had many things made bigger than what they were, thanks to the media. It was tough to see him leave Cleveland.

Certainly he isn't a saint, but who says he is supposed to be? It's a shame that he can't play anymore, he was always one of my favorites.

As far as whether or not he corked his bats, I can't say. But then again, neither can anyone else in here.

As far as Omar goes...well, he didn't like him. Big deal. Get over it O. Have fun wherever you get traded to...

Even if Albert Belle or Bucky Dent or whoever did cork their bats, it wouldn't amount to much of anything. Check out this link: <a href="http://www.bostonbaseball.com/whitesox/physics.html" target="_blank">http://www.bostonbaseball.com/whitesox/physics.html</a>

If anything, corking a bat would make the ball travel a shorter distance.

Even back when he was Joey Belle at LSU he was the same jerk then that he is now. His temper tantrums at LSU were legendary. His parting shot to LSU, to which he owes much, in Sport Illustrated was an all-time jerk classic, and so was his comment about what Sports Illustrated could kiss.

Here's a good summary of Joey. Amazingly, it's from a promotion for a book about him (officially by him, but can you say "ghost writer"? Of course you can):

========================================
Don't Call Me Joey: The Wit and Wisdom of Albert (Joey) Belle

How does baseball's best hitter end up hated by even his hometown fans? How does one man manage to finish consistently near the top of the "biggest jerks in sports" polls, year after year? Don't Call Me Joey brings you the full story, told in his own words, of one of the most disagreeable sports figures in recent memory, the most loathed pro baseball player since Ty Cobb. It's all here -- Belle's tirades and scufflings with reporters, including a profane outburst leveled at NBC reporter Hanna Storm during the 1996 World Series (which earned him an unprecedented $50,000 fine); his beaning of a fan with a baseball during a game; his high-speed chase of two Cleveland teenagers who had egged his house on Halloween; his unprovoked hit-and-run on diminutive Milwaukee second baseman, Fernando Vina; his obscene gestures to heckling Indians fans; his hate-hate relationship with the media; and his non-appearance (for his own safety) at the 1997 All-Star Game, held in Cleveland, where he had played for nearly a decade. Don't Call Me Joey provides all the wit and all the wisdom of a man whose monstrous contract is matched only by his monstrous ego, the man who ESPN's Bill Conlon has described as a "serial jerk" and whose former fans call "a money-hungry backstabber", a man who has done more, single-handedly, to set back the cause of baseball than anyone in recent memory.
===========================================

You have to love it.

That's from:

<a href="http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=194618&cat=18889&type=3&dep t=3920&path=0%3A3920%3A18888%3A18889%3A22203" target="_blank">http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=194618&cat=18889&type=3&dep t=3920&path=0%3A3920%3A18888%3A18889%3A22203</a>

If you want his CBS Sportsline "rap sheet" (which is funny reading), it's at:

<a href="http://cbs.sportsline.com/u/ce/feature/0,1518,3614315_52,00.html" target="_blank">http://cbs.sportsline.com/u/ce/feature/0,1518,3614315_52,00.html</a>

His career stats are much like Kirby Puckett's, only with more power. Puckett will make the Hall of Fame easily. Belle won't.

I don't believe Albert Belle wrote the book. Typically when someone puts together a collection of quotes from just one person, the person quoted will be listed as the author.

For instance, if I wrote a book called "Malleus Dei: Wit and Wisdom From A Gun Wielding Man" yet filled the book with nothing but quotes from your posts on this board.. how could I claim to be the author? None of the words would be my own.

I believe this is the case with the Albert Belle book.
Belle might have some problems.. but bashing himself for a buck isn't something that he'd be real keen on doing.
