OOTP5 Prospects review

A while ago I made a thread about my prospects as they were happening and there was a lot of detail that wasn't especially neccessary. I'm essentially doing this to see how much this report matters and if these guys really pan out at a high percentage.

I started a leauge in 1946 and it is now 1953. Originally there were two leauges with 10 teams each and now there are 12 teams each. My franchise is the Omaha Royals and I've finished in first place for four years straight and appeared in the October Classic 3 times, winning it once (1951). Right now I'm busting my ass to win another before my top pitcher, Joe "The Surgeon" Bolduc, gets old and his wheels fall off. I have the highest payroll in baseball. Anyway, I was poking around in my almanac and I was looking at my 1946 top prospects and started laughing and then I remembered the old thread. Well here is a better look at these guys after seven years. As it looks in my almanac, these are the top prospects in 1949:

1 John Wexler 22 1B Good Good Good C B AAA .292 13 60
Wex turned out to be very good. He's a good hitter and gets on base (OBP is my primary concern, as an experiment) he's got some pop and he plays average defense. He made the bigs in 1947 and promptly won rookie of the year. He went to the all star game in '50 and '51. He's 29 now and on the downside of his career.

2 Bill Jan 18 CF Average Good Good C D A .225 8 48
In 1951 I promoted Jan to AA and then later I got an e-mail reccomending his demotion back to A. I was sick of this. I dunno but I have no patience for 23 year olds in A ball. So I traded him to Miami for a mercenary home run hitter, essentially I got nothing. In '53 he's still in the minors and is now doing well in AA.

3 Michael Phelps 21 SP Good Brilliant Good AA 7-15 5.77 151.1 191 32 84
Wierd that his name ended up being a famous one in real life. Randomly generated names sometimes do that. I had a career minor leauge 3B named Corey Dillon, as well. Anyway, Phelps turned out to be rather good. Made the bigs permanently in '52. He's not dynamite but he's a solid pitcher. He was my only lefty in the rotation before I traded for one this season. His biggest draw back is that his endurance isn't great.

4 Luis Palacios 19 SP Average Average Brilliant A 2-6 5.44 89.1 109 25 64
This guy was a huge bust. In 1953 he was dicking around in AA ball at the age of 26 with a 6.60 ERA. I cut him.

5 Dustin Hedges 22 3B Good Fair Brilliant D C AAA .257 3 39
Dustin ended up making the bigs in 1948 and won the starting job in '49 and promptly made the all star game. He made the all star game in '50 as well and was a solid contributer during his time with the Omaha Royals. Excellent eye and a good bat but poor defense and a tendency to go cold at the worst times. He came up for free agency in '53 and ultimately his cold streak in the 52 playoffs and his poor defense led me to let him go, he now starts at third for the Albequerque Isotopes and is doing well.

6 Tobias Salazar 22 RF Average Average Good D C AA .000 0 0
Tobias never really amounted to squat. I traded him in 1949 to San Antonio because he was just taking playing time away from better people. He's now 29 and still in the minors (AAA). I didn't get anything for him, either.

7 Ronald Johnson 21 SP Good Good Average AA 0-0 5.14 7.0 13 0 3
Johnson was injured a lot and I traded him to Nashua in 1949 for a left fielder who helped me win the 51 October Classic. Johnson is one of those guys that sits on the fence between the bigs and AAA. He started 11 games in 1952 and ended up with an ERA of 9.00.

8 Jayson Brown 19 SP Average Good Good A 6-14 5.48 159.1 201 74 130
Jason went to San Antonio with Salazar in 1949 with similar results. He's now pitching AA ball at the age of 26.

9 Angel Puga 22 SS Average Average Fair C B AAA .333 0 12
Angel is a role player right now. He made the bigs in 49 and started a couple months in 53 but he's really around because he's an excellent short stop and third baseman (both A!). He's not a good hitter and doesn't have good discipline and has virtually no power but he is a superb bunter. Valuable asset off the bench.

10 Robert Steller 18 SP Average Good Good A 4-11 5.34 119.2 158 44 85
Just recently cut this guy too. He was goofing off in AA so I just let him go for good.

So, as you can see. Two of these guys lived up to their potential and one became a role player. The rest are washed out, although the jury is still out on Bill Jan. He'll maybe become a minor contributor on a bad team but he is very far away from being what he should have been.

In brief, considering the whole leauge's top ten:

1. LF Jason Rabin, Rhode Island. - One of the best players in the leauge and a candidate for the Golden Bat. Five time all star, played for several different teams. Currently with Eugene.

2. CF Steve Bassett, Oklahoma City. - Also very, very good. Three time all star.

3. SP Melvin Rice, New Orleans. - Washed up, 26 and in AAA.

4. C Benjamin Calvert, Wichita. - Decent player, made his first all star game in 53. Currently with Virginia Beach.

5. SP James Taylor, Buffalo. - Oh wow I just found out this dork is on my team now. He's 25, and out for the year with a torn back muscle. He was doing well in AAA until that happend.

6. CF Dale Davis, Billings. - Decent player. Played for Omaha for a season, 52 in which he made the all star game. Let him go via free agency in 53. Now with Little Rock.

7. SP Oscar Savino, Nashua. - Made the bigs in 53 at the age of 24. No virdict yet.

8. SP Earl Dunham, Wilmington. - One of the most outstanding pitchers in the bigs, immediately after being traded from Wilmington to Nashua. Wilmington is far and away the worst franchise in my leauge. Has been an all-star four straight years. And the winner of the October Classic twice. I hate this guy, I have had to face Nashua every time I've been to the October Classic and I can never hit him.

9. SP Ramon Davila, Wichita. - I ended up getting Davila in 47 and I just traded him in 53. He was a good pitcher, his numbers didn't reflect the ratings the game gave him but he was solid. I had to trade him for monetary reasons. He wanted 14 mil plus and I didn't think he deserved to be paid more than my lights-out ace Joe Bolduc. Is a two time all-star and won WL Rookie of the Year in 1948. Now with Savannah.

10. SP Jerry Crumpton, Richmond. - This guy turned out great too. One of the best if not the best lefties in the game. I signed him in 53 for one year at 15 million but he started the year with a 4.11 ERA and I traded him for someone with a better season going who also had one year on his contract. Crumpton been an all star twice, EL Rookie of the Year in 1948 and EL Golden Arm winner in 1951.
