Question what's the most you would shell out?

what's the most $$$ you would shell out for a star player? I just signed Barry Zito to a 5 year ext worth 13 million a year. he's my star and he wouldn't settle for anything less. Last year he went 22-3 with an era of 2.10. so i'm hoping things will stay the same for the next several years.

By self-imposition, I keep my team salary between $50 and $55 million, so signing big free agents is tough. I think the highest I've gone is about $7 million. Roy Oswalt (5 time Cy Young winner) is becoming a free agent at the end of the current season (2011) and I'd like to bid on him. However, I'm sure he'll be in the $12 million to $13 million range, and I doubt I can afford him. I have to see if I can get by not resigning all my other guys with expiring contracts

I paid $14 million for Rich Aurilia (two years) as the White Sox. We had a gaping hole at short and wads of cash on hand, and Rich was the only decent shortstop available. I know I overpaid for him, and he had a solid regular season (though not worthy of $14 million). However, he rewarded me big-time by hitting over .600 in the playoffs (including a dramatic bottom 9, game- and series-winning, three-run homer in the game 5 of the WS). Aurilia was unreal. My Sox went 11-1 in the playoffs that year to win our second straight WS title. Go Rich.

The most I paid so far is for resigning Greg Maddux at 10,500,000 but he had an cumulitve ERA of 2.29 over the contract so I'm not complaing. My second or third year was the only year that I signed multiple free agents. I signed Jon Garland to a 4yr/2mil, Roy Oswalt 3yr/1.8mil and Chick Lucio 3yr/4mil contracts, all starting pitchers. Chick and Roy both have won Cy Youngs for me in the two seasons after, Jon hasn't developed much yet but in the third season he is off to a 4-1 2.80 start. Last season I was able to get Barry Zito for 5yr/6.9mil. I used to be worried about replacing Maddux,Glavine,Smoltz but I should be all set now. If I can only get my farm system to produce a good 5th starter I'll be all set.

I just signed Jack Cust to a 5-year, $10 million
per year extension, as well as Adam Dunn to a 5-year, $8 million per year extension.

Hawk.

I also have a self-imposed $50M cap. Despite this, I have a $10M SS, which makes things difficult. I needed an SS badly and he was the best available. He'd was in the top three in runs scored and stolen bases for something like 4 or 5 years running (and has been since). I offered him the $$ before I thought better of it, and couldn't being myself to withdraw the offer. No one outbid me... Fortunately, my other guys are all young, so none of them are making the big bucs yet. He is in the last year of his contract and I will probably let him go FA, even through my next best base stealer/run scorer doesn't even come close to him. The $50M cap has worked wonders, though.... For the first time since playing the game I didn't make the playoffs. Its not so easy when you have half the payroll everyone else does.

I keep making the playoffs (well, most years, there have been some 2nds and 3rds), and losing in either the 1st round or 2nd round. The biggest thing about the $50 M cap is not the talent, its the depth. At least for me.

Once I finish up my historical league (finances off until about 1960) era without finances I'm imposing a $60 million dollar cap on my Boston Red Sox (not counting coaches/scouts) so I probably won't be paying more than 7 or 8 for a really good player. Unless it's say, Ted Williams or Yaz or a few of our other future standouts. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> But even then, gotta stay within the cap.

Just this morning, I was in a bidding war for Josh Beckett. I ended up handing over 16 mil for the next 7 years. A few seasons ago, I gave Pedro 15 mil for the next 4 years. So far its going pretty good cause i've won the last 2 world series with my BlueJays. Needless to say i'm losing money so I have to pull a Florida Marlins soon.

i havent signed a free agent to big cash, but so far in my season i got Mike Mussina and Jason Giambi to both agree to contract extensions of 13 million dollars each. Giambi almost walked out on me and i was afraid he would say no way...however, he is the best 1B in my league (2002 MVP, i'm in year 2003 now) and he deserves more money than Jim Thome who is making 12 million a year. As for Mussina, he demanded over 13 million dollars and agreed to take just 13. it seems like a ridiculous amount of money, but i've done alot to try to keep my payroll below 100 million. so far i'm still doing a good job. as of next year i will have a 98-99 million dollar payroll when the new contracts come into play. but with no need at any positions b/c of quality minor leaguers comin in...i think i'll be fine.

I paid 20 mil for a pitcher who was 20-0 with a .64 era over 26 starts. I also paid 20 mil for a 370-70-200 guy.
