Question Question For Those Who Play Without Ratings

I've been toying with the notion of trying my hand at a fictional league without using ratings to see how I do with the challenge. For those of you who do something like this I'd like to hear your theories on who you draft.

I've been doing that in my solo league now for a while. I have only the general ratings on (speed, stealing, etc). I really like it because it does make it a bit more challenging. Rather than glancing at stats but making decisions off ratings, the stats, for majors and minors, become of utmost importance. Especially fun (or frustrating, depending on the situation) are guys who have good and bad seasons close together. Which one do you put more weight on? Was one just a down year, or was one a career-best? To me it feels a little closer to reality. I like it.

What kind of things do you base who you draft in each years amatuer draft?

I look at the stats, the level of competition, and the general scouting reports. I ignore what my scout says because it turns out he's usually wrong.

Anyway, to echo what gmo said, I've had such a blast with this solo league where I have all ratings off that I doubt I'd play any other way. It's a modern league, but with different settings, and at times, it makes my head spin trying to figure out who had fluke year, who might have "taken their game to the next level", whose scouting report is a bunch of nonsense...

Oops, missed that part. I typically just try to get the best player available. I too look at the amateur stats and competition level, but for HS players that does not tell a lot.

I do use the scouting report list, usually checking closely the top position players & pitchers on that list. For picking who to select at any given point, I tend to favor speed and defense and good control pitchers, so being good in those is a plus for me. Sometimes I'll put extra weight on power, like after a season of being last in the league in HR. Similarly if I have few players at a given position in my system, I'll favor a player from that position. Actually, the draft is not one of my favorite parts because it seems like quite a bit of a crapshoot, though that may just be more realistic.

I love playing with ratings and stars off. The biggest obstacle for me is knowing when my minor leaguers are ready for the show. Crappy guys in the minors usually have crazy good stats while studs are 4-10.

I played a half-season with the stars and ratings off. It drove me crazy, and I found that it took me much too long to do the baseball managerial chores. Intuitively, I figure that the computer and I make the same roster and draft choices most of the time anyways, so I turned the stars and stuff all back on.
This is just me, though, and my personal preference. Lots of people like to have the stars and stuff off. I prefer them on.

Exactly... if you are looking for things to move along quickly, turning off ratings and stars is the wrong way to go. I love no ratings/no stars for both on line play and solo play, but I prefer a very deliberate pace. For me, the fun comes from making careful decisions throughout my roster.

That's a great point. In my solo league, I play out all of the games, and any changes I make are usually very small -- but if you prefer wheeling and dealing and looking to move quickly, you're probably right, turning off ratings would just give you a headache.

I haven't had the game long, but I love stats and I like to make the best choices that I can make. I have the ratings and stars on, but I also look at stats too. I do not make all choices with ratings and stars. I traded for this really good 1B and traded away the bad hitting 1B I had. My new 1B hit .289 with 36 HR and 107 RBI's. The next year he hit .258/21/89. Was this just a down year or is this 33 year old starting to tail off? Something I will find out this season. Just because you have the stars and ratings on does not mean you have to go strickly by those. Use your ratings too. Just because he is a "4 Star" doesn't mean he is going to be Barry Bonds every year. He will have a bad year too...maybe two bad years. Who knows. That's why I like this game.

Very true. I do both kinds of play: fast, season in a few minutes kind of play, and slow, game-by-game play. For the slow play, I don't use ratings. For the fast play, I do.

I play out all my games as well. I seem to keep interest in the league longer when I'm involved day to day as opposed to sim weeks at a time. I'm just looking for a new challenge. Instead of playing with real players and the ratings I thought I'd try playing fictional without ratings and see how that goes.
