Fictional, for the same reasons mentioned above: a fresh history & no idea of how a particular player will/should develop.

I use to go all fictional, but went back to some historical with Gambo's new DB that imports players when they made their pro debut as opposed to their MLB debut. The guys have a name with the face and it's easier for me to keep up with all of the teams, but you still don't know if a player will turn out or not. ex: Mattingly never made it out of AAA, while Willie Aikens is approaching 500 HR's... my last fictional league i went from 1971 to 2042, this one started with real players in 1977 and i'm currently about to start the 1990 season so i guess i'll be back to fictional again in about 25 seasons...

I like real, so I have something to start with, but I do find it more fun when everyone's fictional after about 20 years.

Real players because i just need to know who the players are and how good they are right away not find out who the best player is.

I used to love historical, but in the last month I've been fooling around with fictional, and I don't think I'm going back -

Real.
I just cant get into fictional.
Yeah i know by 2030 everyones fictional anyway
but how many of us have kept a league going for 500 years?
If thats the reason not to enjoy real players i would say just play slower. Sim a week a day. I enjoy watching the season just as much as looking at the stats at the end of the year.
In fact im gonna run a league using real trades, retirements.Which will take time to do, changing all the b-days before proceeding and then back. (Just waiting to see if the Wallman utility problem with expanding leagues is or has been fixed.)
I also have a league in which anything can happen.
and in another i own a team. Plus an alltime tourney and replay of every world series too. I enjoy all of them.

Of course i can see how being an owner of a team and not knowing what a fictional player will do can be fun too.
But just because you use real players doesnt mean they will
do exactly the same as real life. Injurys, different teams, different
lineups can effect this. Yes i expect McGwire to hit a lot of homeruns but not to hit exactly 70 in 1998. Who knows maybe he just doesnt develop. As far as no preconceived notion, any player you draft you have a preconceived notion what a player will do. If not why draft him? I mean do you look for a power hitter and draft the one with the lowest power rating. The ratings are still there in real its just that you recognize the names. Plus i like the decision of should i take Bonds, Sosa or McGwire and the what ifs like Shoeless Joe not getting suspended.

Also if you dont like the preconceived notion you could try using the orginal database till 1998 and then you might have Koufax
and Mathewson not coming in as starters but relievers which
may give another pitcher a chance and a batter releif or misery.
I personally like to take my time setting up my historical replay
and enjoy the season. Lets face it i can read about the 1927 yankee season all i want but this is about the closest i can get to being there in time and watching that season unfold. Yeah i hope Babe hits 60 home runs but depending on how his career has developed i may or may not expect it. By that time in his career i may expect him to hit at least 30 but i could look at a fictional batter and expect the same depending on how his career has developed. And then theres the challenge of making the Uekers and Mendozas into good hitters.

But this is by no means a knock on fictional. I can understand why people enjoy it too.
Play it the way you want too. Its your league. Do what is most fun for you.

Real!

I like to use the legends of the game when I play, guys like Dave Kingman, Jose Canseco, Greg Luzinski, Larry Parrish, Gregg Jeffries...guys that were undisputably the best players of their generation. It takes me back to my younger years and its fun to watch them perform again in a different light.

I like to start fresh with all records cleared with fictional teams and fictional players. Its really nice seeing a league from the start and watching records get broken and being able to remember the seasons that the broken ones come from.

I originally purchased OOTP3 because it allowed me to sim any season I wanted; I was never interested in playing fictional leagues. I messed around with the fictional stuff to start, to get the feel of the game and from that point never really tried to sim a historical league. I found the fictional far more intriguing for all of the previously mentioned reasons.
