Retirement...
Okay..so I think I made a bad, bad mistake....or was I fooled?? I have had this great player....Larry Wilkerson....he's a career .306 hitter, over 400 HRs in 17 years....his last season he still hit .260 and whacked 33 HRs, and drove in 88 RBIs..... seemed like he might have a few more decent years in him....he's pretty fast (B) and not a bad base stealer (B...but dropped to C).... His salary had been 9.6 million and was in the last year of his contract...I offered him 1.86 for 3 more years and he took it during August.....and then suddenly after accepting his player history says "he's declining fast....and may be thinking about retiring already" and he basically orocedes to struck out the rest of the season ....
Did I get duped??? Is there anyway to get him to retire ....except by releasing him...and then having to pony up 5 mil.??? Frankly, did I just blow it or what?? |

Try sending him to Single A ball before "proceeding to next season", his chances of retiring will go up dramatically, otherwise you are stuck.
He may retire on his own anyways. |

Yeah put him in the minors and hope he retires at the start of the next season. Its not as though you gave him a huge contract but giving him 3 years was obviously a mistake. With older players like that I would rather over-pay for one year or two maximum. I am not sure what your budget was like or what sort of contract he wanted/would accept so I am not sure what I would have done in your shoes. If you have 5 million to spare this year you could just buy him out and release him otherwise I would go the minors route.

Oh and by the way... you weren't fooled. Just recognize that players drop extremely fast in ratings once they hit that breaking point. A star player like this probably took almost two full seasons to plummet but some can pretty much disappear in one year. I have yet to see a player slowly decline over many years (except through "random" rating fluctuations).
My general rule of thumb is to sign a player until he reaches 36 or 37 and then sign them to one and two year contracts. If a player has just started to decline in ratings you can be fairly certain he will have at least one good year left and possibly a second decent one but by the third they are usually a bench player at best. |

Why give him the extension in August? I always wait right before "Proceed to Next Seasion" to start with that. Its not as though you gave him a huge contract but giving him 3 years was obviously a mistake. With older players like that I would rather over-pay for one year or two maximum. Actually, with players in their late 30s I've had success by signing them 4-5 year deals for dramatically less salary--knowing that they would retire in about two years and let me out of the contract. Rather than $1.8m, the guy probably could have had him for $1.1m or so. |

oh sh.... I forgot to also say I gave him the extension because he would have become a FA at the end of the season...and I needed to sign some other players too..... perhaps I should have waited.... learn something new everyday....thanks...

Not a bad idea actually but I won't personally send my veterans into the minor leagues to retire. Unless I absolutely half to make a spot for them I will keep them on my roster as I can't imagine these players accepting that assignment if they had a long successful career. If the guy was always on the fringe sure I might, but not my aging stars. So I force myself to let these guys play things out, sort of a house rule I guess. |

Lots of people have a house rule prohibiting sending anyone making over $100,000 to the minors. Personally, I don't have that kind of self discipline.
I just had a guy I'd gotten in trade when he was 34 ... HoF-bound, but at the time I got him, he'd only been on 1 All Star team. In the three years he was my starting SS, he went to the AS game every year, hit .359, .349, and was hitting over .350 (ratings 5-4-4) in July when I reluctantly resigned him to $2.77M, 1-year after he set the FBL record for hitting streak at 41 games. By the end of last year he had over 2600 career hits. I had to bench him in August, after a 3-50 run. He finished the year at .332. He's had 8 AB in 8 games this year for .125, and is making his $2.77M hitting .235 in AA. Three AS years in a row followed by .235 in AA ... yeah, they tend to slip fast.... Here's a screenie of his Career Stats page ...

Yes, I made it. If you choose to try it, please make a copy your /Graphics directory and your colors.ini. The .zip overwrites only those files I changed, not all of them.

Are there any limitations/drawbacks to this scheme that are known? (Obviously backing up the file is smart, but just curious if there are any known color incompatabilities or other drawbacks).

The yellow "tired" is a little difficult to read against the lighter, yellow-ish wood background. Also, I hate the "sky-blue" header text, but changing it effects too many things. I could never get a color that looked good everywhere, so I just settled for the least of the evils. The "cold-in-game-lineup" is still not quite off-black enough for me, but it's more blue than the default, and works better, IMHO.
Other than that, I think it works ... I've been playing it for 5-6 weeks now...
