1947 All-Star Game
Sportsman's Park, St. Louis BOX SCORE This game was billed as a home game for the AL in the Browns' home park, but despite the team's pennant last season, there were a lot of Cardinals fans in the park on this day. The scoring started in the top of the 3rd when Cardinals star Morton "The Miracle" Chamblee hit a 2-out RBI triple off AL starting pitcher Cotton Simson of the Browns. Both Chamblee and Simson are well-loved in St. Louis, so the reaction from the crowd was mixed. The AL got the run back in the bottom of the inning when A's outfielder Peaches Badeau hit an RBI triple of his own. He then scored when Yankees outfielder Jimmy Ditty singled in the next at-bat. Phillies first baseman Lonny Arrendale tied the score at 2 with a solo homerun to leadoff the top of the 4th. That was it until Badeau hit a 2-out solo homerun in the bottom of the 7th off Phillies star Bill Bailey to give the AL the lead. They expanded their lead with yet another solo homerun, setting an all-star record with three in a game, off the bat of hometown favorite Frankie Bowers for the Browns. A's pitcher Lefty Bowden set the NL down 1-2-3 in the 9th to earn a save, and the AL continued their all-star dominance. Code:

WEB PAGES UPDATED...
July 1947 Detroit continues to surge. They finished the month by going 13-3 and taking possession of first place in the AL. The Tigers duo of Ray Kress and Luther Ormiston is powerful. They are 1-2 in the AL with 25 and 20 homeruns respectively and 1-3 in RBI with 83 and 78. Washington went 8-4, and their offensive struggles continue to plague them. They have only one regular hitting .270 or better (Blake Crocitto at .332) and Carl Kahle leads the team with just 11 homeruns. The top RBI man is "Jungle Jim" Dunkel with just 53. Meanwhile, their pitching staff has been excellent, but they are not getting enough support. The Reds remain in first place, and their lead over Brooklyn is now 2 games. With two months left in the season, the top 6 teams in the league are separated by just 7 games. If Detroit and Cincinnati both won the pennant, it would match up the two most inept (in terms of winning pennants) franchises in history. Detroit has won just one pennant, 1928, when they went on to defeat a highly-favored Braves team in 6 games. Cincinnati's only pennant came in 1920, and they went the distance in a 9-game World Series, losing to the mighty White Sox amid rumors that would become the Black Sox scandal. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Bob "Stretch" Bussmann (CHA)! He had a record of 4-0 in 6 games started, with an ERA of 0.97 and 2 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: Ray "The Boss" Kress (DET)! He batted .390 in 77 AB, with 9 homers and 25 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Mickey Lonergan (PHI)! He had a record of 6-0 in 6 games started, with an ERA of 2.38 and 1 shutouts. National League-Batter of the Month: Tom Howard (NYG)! He batted .404 in 89 AB, with 8 homers and 32 RBI. Code:

Some quick notes:
Al Jackson is having a superb rookie season with Cleveland. He is 2nd in the AL with 79 RBI and 4th in the AL with 18 HR. If there's any knock on him, it would be the 15 errors he has committed in rightfield, which are 6 more than the next highest total in the majors at that position. The top 3 RBI men in the NL are all middle infielders! No one in the NL has an ERA below 3.00! |

Thats one reason why I didnt trade for Mr. Jackson, he cant field worth crap
![]() As for the potential matchup, that will happen only if my pitching can become consistent. Mills seems to be havign issues, Emberling has been havign more issues with his teammates blowing games, shipley has een like a yo-yo, and Steven "WOnder Boy" Smith isnt so wonderful anymore. If it doesnt rurn around, September may bring a rude end of many players careers.

And Ken Chaucer got hosed out of the BOTM award. He was hitting everything in July. That's too bad.
I think the Braves are finally getting together and if it wasn't for that horrible start they could be in the thick of things. |

Yea, and now that we have two of our top starters back, we hope to push the lead.
Hal Andrew came back from the DL two weeks ago and went 4-0 in four starts. Vic Gorin is back from the DL and is hopefully rejuvinated for August. Mike Downey, after a couple of rough starts, was a life saver last month. I really hate to demote him to the Pen. But Gorin is a proven vet and is also trying to solidify his place in the career strikeout leaderboard. I too would love to see Detroit vs. Cincy for the World Series, but we still have a lot of games left to play. A two game lead is nothing to be excited about for either of us.

Hear hear, I'll defiantely agree with that. Especially with my teams issues with Philly and the BRaves, and the Dodgers, Pittsburgh and Philly jsut itching to get abck into it. One series sweep and i'm in third.
Hopefully my pitching staff can get back on track, as my outfield experiment is going better than expected. Artie is back to form, Rutty and Baily is making it hard to give both playing time, and even Sistruck is still playing decently at thirty-nine. Gotta love surprises like that

August 15, 1947
The Senators finally got back on track. They began this month by going 9-5 and moving back into first place. The Tigers went 6-7 and now trail Washington by a half-game. The Red Sox have quietly snuck back into the race. They are 11-3 so far in August and sit just 5.5 games back. The Reds rolled off an 11-game winning streak that stretched from July 24th to August 4th. During the streak, they swept the Giants and Cubs in 3-game series and the Cardinals in a 4-game set. The streak came to a crashing halt, however, when the Reds hosted Pittsburgh. The Pirates won 3 straight games in Cincinnati before dropping Game 4 in 12 innings. Thanks to the streak, the Reds now hold a 3.5-game lead over the Phillies. The Dodgers and Pirates are both 4 games out. Dodgers star pitcher Frank Smith has had an off year by his standards, but on August 8th, he collected his 390th career win against the Cubs. The win tied him for 2nd all-time with Bourbon Allen. It was his first win since July 12th and just his 3rd since June 4th. Teammate Jonny Perly became the all-time leading base-stealer, passing Fuzz Allen with his 926th steal. He now has 931 career steals at the age of 31. Code:

If our offense could get it in gear, then the best pitching staff in the majors could make a difference in the race. Our offense is starting to show its age though, and with no viable offensive threats in the minors, we could be hurting in a few years. The pitching staff though is set, with the best rotation in the majors, while Bourbon Jr. (who has layed off the moonshine and solved his control problems), Sennelnekoff, and Matamoros should anchor the staff for years to come.
Another thing about Bourbon. After a rocky first start, Bourbon has reeled off an improbable run of three straight complete game shutouts. He is definately getting a September callup. Last edited by bigjas; 10-20-2004 at 02:31 PM. |

All i've gotta say is where the **** did the Red Sox come from? Geeze from in the basement to back in the race, goes to show that it's not over till the fat lady sings.
And I love how my team can string together those winnign streaks! If I can keep my pitching staff from self-destructing (i'm talking to you MIlls and Smith), we might have a chance at this thing

At the beginning of this season I thought that if Frank had a typical bounce-back season ( as has happened over the course of his career ), that a real shot at win #400 was within reach. After the strong April I was even more certain, but then came a dreary succession of well-pitched but poorly supported games coupled with the beginning reductions in ratings, and now the year has an ominous feel to it.
Still, getting to 390 is a major achievement, and leading the league in Ks at the ripe old age of 37 indicates some gas remains in the tank. Plus, Remmy Paul is even older than my Dad and he is still lights out, so a trip into 400-Land is a fairly sure bet next year. Still a very fun journey to be on. |

I concur, the only thing that i hate is that they're in my league, so any series with Brooklyn, I dont worry about whether i'll give up runs, its' whether i'll be able to score any, since it's guarenteed that i'll face at least one of them, and most fo the time its' both

Ok, take into account his era... He is the ONLY Pitcher in the career leaderboard for ERA with 2.65 The only ones surpassing him are the deadball greats...gindler, lopresto, murph He does everything, he is atop the K's, WHIP, Wins, IP...and for this era...has pretty good CG numbers...and should be the first post 1930 pitcher to get in the top 25 for CG...and he should hold that for awhile.

Harold seems to be the overall leader of the Indianapolis Indians in AAA, at least on offense. We're seven games behind the Rochester Red Wings in the AAA standings, so we're going to need a surge in the last half of this month, but Harold has nothing to be ashamed with the year he's had in AAA.
