need opinions on player dev. dilemma

I have an potential stud Rookie player (R. Sturgis, 25 yrs old) with "Good" in Avg (6), "Brilliant" in HR's (9) and "Good" in both BB & Ks (6,6). He plays 1B with a C range & .993 fld %. I already have a 29 yr old All-Star 1B (K. Orris, .350, 50 HR 150 RBI each year) that I have signed until he dies. I am weak at 3B so I played Sturgis at 3B. 39 games and he still has no 3B ratings. So, during ST the next year I spend the points to train him @ 3B. Guess what? Sturgis doesn't make the transition to 3B.

Would you:
(a) Keep playing Sturgis at 3B (with the .940 default fld%) and hope he learns it
(b) Trade Sturgis for a 3B with similar talent (I'll have to pay big $$'s)
(c) Keep Sturgis at 1B and trade the All-Star, Super-Human, Irreplaceable 1B for a 3B with similar talent
(d) Keep Sturgis at 1B and play Orris at 3B (with the .940 default fld%) and hope he learns it.

Thanks in advance! :-)

Keep trying it occaisonally takes longer than 39 games... although some players just won't learn a new position. 1B almost never learn new positions... so I wouldn't think that you're tremendously likly to be successful.

I would not count on him learning 3b. If he ever does I doubt if he would get above a E or D. 1B RARELY can make good utility men. Especially if they have some size to them.

As for the rest, it sounds like you are doing a better job of GM than I if you are evenin such a dilemna, so i will not venture to say what you should do.

Good luck.

Cool

Assuming that you are not in an AL league and DHing him isnt an option I would lean toward the trade. Look around both leagues for a young 3rd baseman that may develop into a simular player and try to get a trade package put together. At worst use him to trade to fill another weakness(es) and look to get as much out of 3rd as you can till you can find a 3rd sacker to replace him.
As a last resort ask yourself this; is he giving up more than he drives in at 3rd? Just my two cents worth.

I'm not that thrilled by your prospects numbers, atleast not to where I would keep him and trade your original stud. I think one of 2 options make the most sense....either let the young guy play third...even though he sucks at it, he might not be that much of a liability there. It couldn't hurt to check it out. Or, I would trade him for a thridbasemen.

2 cents:

in situations like this i always try and compare the game to real life. im a yankee fan so ill use them:

the yanks have drew henson coming up (apparently not the stud he was supposed to be but close enough here...). do you think yankee managment would consider trading jason giambi or trying to shuffle him to 3b (i know he started out there in minors but that was before he became a gorilla) just to accomodate an untested up-and-comer? definitely not.

what im saying is, even if one option might make the team better because of the game's programming, isnt it better (and more fun) to play realistically?

I traded him.

In his second year, Sturgis has been very weak: .240 BA, small # of HR's, and his ratings has stayed the same. He is sporting a .890 fld%. At the same time my 24 yr old 3B, who was to be my utility player, suddenly blossomed to "Good" across the board. That made my decision much easier and I traded Sturgis for some prospects.

Sturgis is now eating up the "Player of the Month" awards for a last place team, but that's OK- we're in the World Series. :-)
