The State Of The Play-By-Play

I'm not sure that I even need to point out that the play-by-play is a far cry from an accurate description of a baseball game, let alone a realistic one. Don't get me wrong -- even with the play-by-play as limited as it is, playing out certain games can turn out to be awfully exciting at times.

But the PBP is awfully repetitive, simple, and at times, wholly inaccurate and unsatisfying.

I'm not sure if anyone other than Markus can answer this, but I hope someone might have an idea - why is this so? It doesn't seem like it would be incredibly difficult or cumbersome to add in a few more results when a certain event happens (hell, it's been done in the past).

Does it take too long? Can it only be written in, as someone put it, "the English that you'd find in translations of manuals"? (Obviously not OOTP6 manuals, but you get the point...)

Much thanks.

Actually I understand from another thread that Markus has either been kidnapped or is simply too captivated by Arsenal to work on the PBP.

The PbP makes perfect sense when you realize that your announcer is a "eleven-teen" year old girl...

Why else would there be so many "pretty plays", and at the end of the final playoff game, who else would say "C U next year!" ?

I think this is one area that will be greatly improved with SI. Markus is a great programmer, but his writing in english skills appear to be limited.

Well, the only reason I'm even attempting to answer this is because you directly asked - meaning I hope you'll accept the answer

Doing a quick calculation, there are probably about 1500 ideas and suggestions in that forum. PbP is one of them. I suspect many of the ideas are fairly simple (IE: adding more variability). but others are certainly difficult (IE: financial coeficient, H2H).

It's not the individual ideas that are tough, it's the fact there are 1500 of them.

I agree, as long as they have someone familiar with a LOT of baseball idioms writing it. Which means I give it a 50-50 shot.

Although variability should be improved in any event. The pbp is relatively variable in CM 03-04, in my opinion.

I believe also that Markus has said that the way the database is set up makes it difficult/ time consuming to add or change the play-by-play. Some have suggested user-editable pbp (which I think would be neat), however whatever way he chooses it can only get better with the database redesign in v7.

Didnt we all think the same thing about the "engine" redesign from 5 to 6? Sometimes, tearing down and starting from scratch isn't the answer...
