Minors Management

Ok, my first post and first time owner of an OOTP program - version 6, so be easy on me.

I'm trying to get my minor league roster/rotation/lineups set before I start my first season. I've got a couople of questions.

1. How many players do you generally have on you minor league roster for each level? 25 (13 batters/12 pitchers), or are you allowed more than 25 per level?

2. How do you switch a player who is in AA to AAA and vice versa?

3. If there is a player I want to cut all-together, how do I do that?

Thanks for the help.

Under your team menu, go to transactions and it's a drag and drop to move players between levels. To set lineups and rotations, under team menu go to minor league lineups or rotation. If you go to team setup, and choose for the computer to manage minors, the computer AI will do all of this for you. You don't have to have a full minor league roster, your team will still play games, and the players you do have will accumulate a full season of stats. No limit or "floor" as to how many players you can have in the minors.

I thought 50 per level was the limit. I know it was in OOTP 5. I don't ever go with that many players so I don't know if it holds true for 6.

More generally, I consider 25 to be a "maximum" and 20 (5 SP, 4 RP, 2 C, 5 IF, 4 OF) to be ideal. More than that and some players won't get many ABs / IPs , and I suspect that low playing time has a negative effect on player development.

Wisdom that I was made privy to would suggest that you keep your AAA as close to a 25-man ML roster as you can. You can keep more or less players than 25 on any minor team. If you have too many players, some won't get played, and they don't get stats or development for that.

This is true to a point. What I do with my teams is to have as many as I like, but I manage my minors personally (instead of using the AI) and only play true prospects. For instance, if I have some veterans down in the minors (who doesn't?), then they sit until I need them in the majors. If, for some reason, I only have a handful of actual prospects on any given level, I insert their names into the lineup/pitching roles and leave the rest blank - the computer will then assign players as it sees fit for the other spots (which I could care less about).

Inactivity can lead to a gradual loss in ratings, retirement, and player grumpiness (if he's a veteran). It doesn't hurt the players that you have assigned to the spots, however, so assuming you don't have any more than 9 hitters and ... um ... 14 (5+2+4+2+1, I think) pitchers you care about per level, having a bunch of other guys on that level is perfectly fine, but 50 is the hard cap.

I do what Dan said, except I'll sometimes put a veteran who's in the minors into the lineup, but only to learn a new position (or two).

Occasionally you get some nice surprises. I had one guy who was a terrible 3B (range of 20) learn 1B. Lo and behold, he wound up with a 60 range rating at 1B, a much better 1B than 3B.

Unfortunately he still can't hit enough to get a call up, though.

I like to keep around 21-23 in AAA and AA. I tend to have more in A because i'm trying to develop young talent. If they don't pan out in A, I just release them to cut down the roster if it gets too large. I think the most I had was 36.
