I usually play out the games at the beginning of the season. That way you get to know your team and it's tendencies much better. As the season goes along I then begin to sim a few days at a time. I keep an eye on the schedule and take control of the important games, like division rivals or the top teams.

I used to play out every game but it would take too long to finish a season and thus I wouldn`t be able to very much enjoy the career aspect, so now I sim day-by-day. That way, I`m essentially the GM of the team and leave the managing to the AI.

My friends and I play a "solo" league together using a remote desktop program called VNC. Everyone plays out his own team's games, and the rest are simmed. This allows for head to head play too. It works great. Typically we play 2-4 games per day. Everyone does own the game btw We'd play as an online league if it was possible to play out the games in that mode... and if there was head to head play.

I started a 2003 season in OOTP5 and converted to OOTP6 in the middle of the 2008 season. It's now June 25, 2009. I control two teams, Cleveland in the AL and Pittsburgh in the NL. They've never faced each other (so far) in either interleague play or in post-season.

From the beginning I played out almost all my games. If I really get blown out I sim the rest of that game. Occasionally I sim a day (without even starting to play). But ordinarily I play all games for both teams. At the end of every day I review the minor leagues for both teams as well as the waiver wire, league leaders, etc.

It does take a LONG time to play this way, especially controlling two teams, but the total immersion factor makes it more than worthwhile, in my opinion.

My Cleveland team (controlled since the start of 2003) quickly became a dynasty. The Indians first went to the playoffs in 2004 as the wild card team, and have been there every year since, winning two World Series (in 2005 and 2007) in the process. Fan interest hit 100 in 2008 and has stayed at that level now for over a year.

I took control of the Pirates in mid 2006 because Cleveland was winning so much and the Pittsburgh franchise was a mess, mired deep in last place with a fan interest of 16. I wanted to see if I could do the same thing in Pittsburgh I did in Cleveland (while retaining control of the Indians).

It hasn't worked nearly so well in Pittsburgh. After three years fan interest is finally up to 46, and the Pirate's minor league system is second in baseball (just behind Cleveland's). But after three years, in June 2009, the Pirates are only two games above .500, even though they're finally in contention in a weak NL Central. Pittsburgh's payroll is 30th in baseball; it's stocked almost exclusively with young players (can't afford high priced FAs). My hope is that within another year I can have the Pirates winning regularly.

I still like playing out (almost all) my games. If I could, I'd probably play out AAA games, too (at least some of them). I've totally gotten to know almost all the players in both organizations. Yeah, seasons do go by at a snail's pace. But someone once said that baseball's not a game for a man in a hurry!

That's how I do it, and I still love every minute of it!

At the beginning of each year I pick a starting pitcher that I have interest in; could be either someone I have traded for a rookie, etc., and play out all his games (30 to 35 games). Sim the rest.

It makes me and him buddies.

I play every game but...

-sim the all-star game

-sim games depending on who is pitching once I get bored and close to the end of the season (i.e. awaiting free agency)

After playing PTP and Diamond Mind for 20-some years and this is my first time with OOTP, I am more into being the GM and not the coach. I want to make the trades and let the coaches do what I hired them for...to coach. I make the changes for my team in the majors and the minors. I sim week-to-week but I might have missed an important pickup if I had not had an injury when I checked the WW and pickup a really good AAA player that I had traded a month earlier. The AI used him at the major league level for a few starts and didn't like him and put him on waivers and I got him back. I like to sim day-to-day when I can (when the wife isen't around as she gripes when I'm on the computer all the time) I sim week-to-week. You might miss a few things going from week-to-week.

I've toyed around with playing games out, but I find it unfulfilling. The incredible lack of options only frustrates me, and the pbp gets on my nerves with all its repetition and by making every play seem like it's incredibly close.

If the in-game part of the game ever gets an overhaul (and I'm hoping it does for v7), I will play out more games. Now I only do it occasionally when I want to have more control over the team.

It does take a lot of time to do it this way...but it is a happy medium between totally simming and totally playing out the games.

Hey, that's just my preference...there are many ways to play this great game...you just have to find the way that you want.

how do you clear record books...do u goto almanac and hit clear recordbook and remove the html record file in the ootp folder?

or you just delete the rookies record stuff only ?

I used to sim a month at a time before my laptop started having problems with shutting off on its own. So now I'm forced to simulate a week at a time at most and have to make sure I save it all the time otherwise my league will get ****ed up. Which is what happened to the solo league I was playing and spent like 3 hours on setting up. Damn computer.

I play out every one of my team's games, although sometimes I'll sim some half innings when I'm not batting. I also never sim the 9th inning because I want control of what is going on and I hate the way the AI controls my team. The AI left my starter in the 9th one time to lose a game that I had a 7-run lead by giving up 3 homers and 8 runs. Imagine the surprise on my face having an 8-1 lead and simming to a 9-8 loss when i know I would have pulled him for my closer as soon as it was within 3 runs, or maybe sooner.

I forgot to add that it all happened with 2 outs and I was tired and wanted to go to bed, and the guy I was pitching to was fouling everything off.

I'm a power-simmer. I set up my team and usually go straight through the regular season in half an hour, month by month. I stop only if something comes up.

I play out a lot of my games. I have a top rated bullpen and when I sim a game they usually get hit much harder than when I play the game out. It does take longer, but if your going to be a real mgr as well as G.M., than thats the way to go. Besides, it's more fun.

I play out a few games when I first buy a new version of the game, just to see what's what, but after that I just sim. I'm the GM of my teams, not the manager.

No one answered jbmagic 's question. As this is also my first time with OOTP, I would also like to know how to delete the rookie records. I'm not at that time in my season yet (almost) and I would also like to know. Thanks.

You can edit the record book by clicking on each entry (Name, Team, Year, etc.) and either clearing it or changing it to zero.

It's better to do this after you "Proceed to Next Season" because the averaged stat records (BA and ERA) aren't set until the game goes to next year.
