Yes and no on the conferences. I had some limitations with TDCB in that it is set for a modern day format. I tried to make the conferences as close as possible to what I knew about the era but there are some obvious errors. For example I know North Carolina and North Carolina State were in the Southern Conference rather than the ACC in the 1940's. In fact the ACC was not created until those schools pulled out of the Southern Conference around 1953 or 54. I believe there were also a lot more independant teams back then so I tried to bunch them into conferences to what seemed to make sense. With TDCB you must have 31 conferences but they can range from 8 to 16 teams. To try and keep my number of teams down I tried to make as many 8 team conferences as possible but still keep basically the proper layout. I also did not want to get into editing conferences as seasons progress so I created the ACC and others before they really existed. I also had a second problem. I can find a ton of college football history on the internet but very little basketball aside from conference winners and tournament results. So in some cases I had to guess based upon football where a school belong in basketball. As for the NFL, glad you are following it. It was quite a surprise to see both the Broncos and Pats get beat. However, my thought is it does not matter. Chicago is just too strong for any opponent and should win the Super Bowl. Although the Bears lost to Baltimore last year with essentially the same team.

Sid Luckman is a man-beast. No reason they should lose at all.
Thanks for the feedback on the College Basketball. Another question: Are you doing the Top 25, or is that game generated? I know you did your own for football, so I'm just curious. Also, it is interesting to see that you have the Big Ten, Big 8 in College Basketball but in football you list it as the Western Conference and SWC. Then you have a completely different SWC in basketball. It makes it your own which is not a knock on you at all. Also, I'm assuming TDCB makes it automatically 64 teams in the NCAA field, while in the actual 1947 tournament I believe there were only 8 or 16. It just adds to the realism if you could edit that. Excellent job Tiger Fan, as this is one of the most in depth reports I've ever seen based on video (and in your case, dice) games. And your writing ability outclasses everyone else (except Craig!). Hope you don't get bored with this. |

For football I am following the real path in that I will rename it the Big 7 and move Colorado from the Mountain States Conference just as they did in real life. Again in basketball, the game restricted me to a minimum of 8 teams in a conference so I added Colorado and Oklahoma State (which was known as Oklahoma A&M at the time) to get me up to 8 teams. Check out The Pale Hose dynasty for more info on Craig....a very well written chronology of a team he has in OOTP6....
And thank you for the synopsis....I confuse the Border Conference, Mountain States, SWC, and Big 6 (8) because they do all mix and match and finally come together with the Big 12, among others.... Keep up the great work! |

I just wanted to say that I am really enjoying this whole thread and am amazed at the depth and quality of the stories from each of the different leagues.
I particularly want to thank you and everyone who contributed to the tutorial for getting a historical league set up. It's been invaluable to me and I am sure many, many others. There are so many aspects of starting a league that are sometimes forgotten or overlooked until it's too late and with this thread it really makes everything so much clearer. I also appreciate all the help from so many of the other board members who helped with valuable insight, questions, feedback and so much more. As a huge hockey fan I really enjoy seeing how that is turning out and think it's great to see some of the old time greats back in action. It's fun to see good old Howie Meeker in the scoring leaders. Sometimes it's hard to remember that he used to play and I can't wait until the NHL expands in 1967-68 to see how that turns out. If you keep going, it will be really fun to see the players I grew up watching in the late 70's, 80's and 90's come to life again in your reports. I hope you continue this. I will certainly keep on reading. |

BOXING UPSET! ZALE WINS MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD In what only can be described as a major upset Tony Zale beat Jake LaMotta for the middleweight championship of the world at Madison Square Garden on Friday. The referee stopped the fight with just over a minute to go in the 5th round because of an ugly gash over LaMotta's left eye. Zale landed 3 huge uppercuts in the final round and LaMotta's legs were close to giving out when the ref stopped the bout. It marked the third straight round Zale had dominated the previously unbeaten champion. The bout had started slowly, as both fighters were feeling each other out. In the second round Lamotta landed a couple of big body blows but Zale stunned the champ with a combination as the round came to a close. It seemed Lamotta was still hurting from that combination as the third began and it appeared to give Zale confidence as he came out swinging in the third and totally dominated the round. At one point the champ appeared close to going down but he hung on and escaped the third. In the fourth Zale again took control and landed some dangerous blows to LaMotta's head while the champ tried to work the body. The fifth, just like the previous 2 rounds was all Zale. With the win, the Chicago born Zale improves to 36-4 while LaMotta's record is now 14-1. The 32 year old Zale is unsure who his first title defense will be against but it is expected LaMotta will have to wait a while for a shot to regain the title as number one challenger Holman Williams is likely first in line. LOUIS TO DEFEND TITLE FEBRUARY 9TH IN DETROIT World Heavyweight champion Joe Louis has agreed to defend his title on February 9th against 4th ranked challenger Nathan Mann. The fight will take place at The Olympia Stadium in Louis' hometown of Detroit. The 35 year old champ is 8-0 since the postwar era of boxing began. All 8 of his victories were by knock out including an 8th round TKO of previously unbeaten Ezzard Charles in the final of the post-war title elimination tournament. That victory earned the Brown Bomber the title belt. Louis successfully defended his title in September against Tami Mauriello, knocking him out in the 4th round. Mann, from Hamden, Connecticut, is 18-4-1 including a 3rd round TKO loss to Louis in the semi-finals of the post-war title tournament. Each of the other losses the 31 year old Mann suffered came in preliminary bouts to determine the postwar champ. After starting his career 2-3, Mann is 16-1-1 in his last 18 bouts. CHARLES EYES REMATCH WITH LOUIS AFTER HOMETOWN VICTORY Ezzard Charles, who's only loss of his career came to Joe Louis in the postwar tournament finale last fall, solidified his case for another title shot with an impressive 9th round knockout of Tommy Gomez. Charles improves to 19-1 with the victory over Gomez, who had been ranked the 5th best heavyweight in the world entering the bout. Before his hometown crowd the man known as the Cincinnati Cobra picked apart Gomez's defenses opening cuts above both eyes before knocking his opponent to the canvas with a vicious uppercut in the closing seconds of the ninth round. With the bell unable to save him, and his wits nowhere to be found, Gomez could not rise before the 10 count. With the loss, the Tampa native Gomez sees his record fall to 24-6. He may also drop out of the top 10 heavyweight contenders. Charles remains the number 3 ranked heavyweight in the world behind Louis and Elmer Ray. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PLAYOFFS BEARS SURVIVE SCARE AND RALLY PAST 49ERS San Francisco played about as good a road football game as you would ever see but in the end it was just not quite enough to stop Sid *Luckman and the Chicago Bears. Despite the 49ers controlling the clock and field possession, Chicago overcame a 10-0 hole to beat San Francisco 17-13. Koy Harris, who completed 20-of-31 passes for 197 yards and one touchdown looked poised and in control all game despite the fact the Bears defense chased him all over the field. The Bears got to Harris 5 times but despite the pressure he continuously racked up first down after first down. However, after a first quarter 13 yard touchdown pass to JT Dillard, the Bears defense refused to allow the 49ers to muster any offense inside the Chicago 30. "Do all you want out there," the Bears defense seemed to say, "but inside the thirty you aren't going anywhere." Four of the five sacks came while the Niners were hovering right around field goal range and on three occassions ended up costing San Francisco a field goal attempt. Luckman did not have a strong game, at least not by his standards. He completed 20-of-31 passes for 305 yards and 2 touchdowns but was picked off twice. Running back George *McAfee was no where to be found, gaining no yards on 13 carries leaving the entire offense up to Luckman. McAfee did catch a 5 yard pass for a second quarter touchdown that closed the gap to 10-7 San Francisco. Kicker Arnie Curtis tied the game with a 47 yard field goal as the first half wore down. Chicago took the lead early in the fourth quarter when Harris made his one big mistake in the game. With a third and five on his own 27 yard line he tried to force a long pass into double coverage and it was picked off by Bears DB Frankie Morrall. Morrall returned 25 yards to the San Francisco 10 and 2 plays later Luckman found Matt Sikahema in the back of the endzone for what would prove to be the winning score. The Niners responded with a field goal on their next drive to cut the gap to 17-13 but could not get any closer. When the two-minute warning arrived the 49ers had a first and 10 on the Chicago 22 yard line but a minute later San Francisco wideout Sam Newman was stopped a yard short on 4th-and-6 allowing the Bears offense to run out the clock. Chicago enters the championship game for the second straight season. The Bears lost to Baltimore a year ago. BROWNS BURST BALLOON OF FAIRYTALE HOUSTON TEXANS Charley Carpenter's second touchdown pass of the game with just over 2 minutes remaining in regulation lifted the Cleveland Browns into the NFL Championship game by giving them a 24-20 win over the surprising Houston Texans. Carpenter is the most unlikely of heroes, a second year pro who was one of 4 starters the Browns used at quarterback this season. Injuries to Bob Slaughter and Jeff McDonald gave the ex-Michigan State star the opportunity. He was no where near perfect, getting picked off twice and completing just half of his passes but Carpenter made the big plays late in the game when needed. Houston, which snuck into the playoffs on the seasons final day and then produced two surprising upsets saw the clock finally strike midnight. The Browns, a bit of an underdog themselves with wins over Kansas City and New England - two clubs with better regular season records than Cleveland - will be a bigtime underdog against the powerful Bears offense in next week's title game from Charlotte. NFL CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW - IS THERE ANYWAY THE BEARS WON'T WIN? by TSN Columnist Scoop McGrew With the best quarterback in the league and the best offense there is just no way an unheralded team from the AFC North can stop the Chicago Bears. They are just too strong. Wait a minute! Stop me if you heard this one before. This has an all too familiar ring to it. It was exactly one year ago when every sportswriter in the land, including yours truly, was telling anyone who would listen how the Bears would dismantle the Baltimore Ravens in last years title game. Sure Baltimore had an excellent defense but Sid *Luckman was used to picking apart defenses and there was no way the Ravens inexperienced popgun offense could keep it close. Well, we got that part right anyway. The game was not close, but it was the Ravens who orchestrated a blowout of hurricane proportions - blasting the Bears 45-14. Fast forward to today and we have a very similiar situation. The Bears, if it could be possible, are even better this season while the Browns have a strong defense but are beat up offensively. Let's start by comparing the two offenses. Possibly the greatest QB to ever play the game is under center for the Bears. Sid Luckman equalled his QB rating record that he set a year ago and has thrown 40 touchdown passes against just 11 interceptions this season. Cleveland will start either Bob Slaughter, who was benched for ineffective play after returning from an early season injury or Charley Carpenter, a second year pro who has more than twice as many career interceptions than touchdowns. At running back it is just as lobsided. Chicago has a healthy George *McAfee who surpassed the 1000 yard mark for the 6th straight season. Cleveland's top back is Tony Ellis who rushed for a career high 867 yards but missed the last 2 games with an ankle injury and is questionable for Sunday. Backup Art Basnight is done for the year with a ruptured achilles tendon meaning the Cleveland starter will likely be number 3 man Bill Green who gained just 288 yards this season. At the receiver position Cleveland finally has an edge. Zach Kruczek caught 106 balls this season and is a 4-time allstar. However, he is the only real threat the Browns have so Chicago can key on him all game long. If the Browns defense decides to double team Bears wideout Ken *Kavanaugh, who led the club with 79 catches, then they will likely get burned by Robert Feeley who had a team high 12 touchdown receptions. Both offensive lines are solid and each club has some real talent on the defensive side of the ball. Cleveland's defense ranked 6th in the league while the Bears were ranked 4th. Chicago's leaders are safety Frankie Morrall, who had 6 picks, and pass rushing lineman Jason Lee who along with linebacker William Swanson tied for the team lead with 7 sacks. However, Cleveland gets a break in that Lee will likely not be able to start due to a knee injury. Defensive end Wayne *Millner led the Browns with 11 sacks and it is essential he gets to Luckman for the Browns to have any success at all. Even with Millner in his face that will not be enough to stop Luckman and the Bears. The early line has Chicago as a 6 point favourite but that is far too low. My prediction is the Bears win it 31-14. Of course I have been wrong before. COWBOYS RUMOURED TO BE EYEING *RAVENSBERG The NFL draft is still a few months away but the NFL's worst club, the Dallas Cowboys may have already decided who they will take first overall. Defense is definately a major need for the team, in particular the defensive line, but word has it the Cowboys are not even considering Navy DE Ben *Chase who is considered the top d-lineman available. It is reported that while they would prefer a lineman, the Cowboys have their eye on the man many scouts feel is the best defensive player available in the draft -- linebacker Bob *Ravensberg. The All-American from Indiana had 120 tackles and 12 sacks in 9 games with a weak Hoosiers squad. According to Dallas insiders the Cowboys feel Ravensberg is just too good a player to pass up despite bigger needs elsewhere. Below are the top 10 draft eligible players as determined by a survey of NFL scouts. Last week Kentucky ran it's SEC record to 7-0 with a 104-43 dismantling of lowly Mississippi on Wednesday and then spanked Georgia on Saturday 91-62. Kentucky's lone defeat was to Georgetown at home on December 3rd. Speaking of losses, two more teams fell from the ranks of the unbeaten leaving NYU as the only college not to have tasted defeat this season. UTEP was surprised 98-65 by Drake on Wednesday while New Orleans was uspet 71-65 by Charlotte the same day. Code:

Stops in Chapel Hill and Raleigh certainly taught the Wake Forest Deamon Deacons young starters a thing or two about basketball. After winning their first 4 games in conference play, Wake Forest was hammered 73-58 by North Carolina on Thursday. They fared a little better against NC State but still came out on the short end of a 73-70 score. South Carolina forward Xavier McCollum was named ACC player of the week. McCollum had 26 points and 21 boards in a win over Georgia Tech on Monday and scored 22 points to lead the Gamecocks past Maryland 86-63 yesterday. Code:

Senior guard Addison Fisher led the way for Missouri last week, pouring in 35 points in an 81-69 win over Kansas while junior center Brandon Sharpe was the big man setting. Sharpe scored 29 for the Tigers in their 75-56 victory over Kansas State. Oklahoma A&M fell a game behind the co-leaders with a 66-49 loss on their home floor to 12th ranked Iowa State. Young was named Big Ten player of the week for the first time in his career and is averaging 15.3 points per game. Ohio State beat Iowa 72-62 to improve to a conference best 6-1. The big star of the week was Holy Cross freshman guard Bob *Cousy. Cousy was named the player of the week after pouring in 29 points and adding 12 assists in an 85-44 win over Navy on Thursday. Louisville and Marquette each came up with road wins over Cincinnati and Detroit while Notre Dame had home wins over Pittsburgh and Penn State. After winning the National Title 2 years ago, the Irish fell to 10-19 last season and finished dead last in the conference. This year is supposed to be a transition year for Notre Dame as they are starting one junior, 3 sophomores and a freshman. The front court led by sophomore forwards George *Ratkovicz (14.9 ppg, 10.9 rpg) and Leo *Barnhorst (17.5 ppg, 10.1 rpg) has matured much quicker than expected. Freshman center Ryan Gardner (14.2 ppg, 9.4 rpg) is also improving nicely and it looks like Notre Dame may be ready to add to its collection of two National titles, 4 final four appearances and 7 conference titles. The Ducks made short work of their other in-state rival by blasting Oregon State 92-47 Saturday. The two victories moved the Ducks to third in the National poll. Washington State sits 10th and San Francisco is now 13th in the nation after home wins over Oregon State and Portland. Dons senior center Jack *Toomay was named player of the week in the PCC North. Santa Clara beat the Trojans 72-64 and completed a solid week with a win over another ranked team - dropping UCLA 91-64. After opening the season with a 10-2 start the Bruins have fallen on hard times, losing all 4 of their in-conference road games. UCLA's only win in PCC South play came at home against Stanford. Quite a departure from the Bruins past, where they have dominated the conference, winning or sharing the regular season title 10 times in the past 14 years and winning the conference tournament 8 times. Chilchote with 16.8 ppg and Jack *Rocker with 17.8 are 2 big reasons why Kentucky is 7-0 in conference play and ranked number one in the nation. The Horned Frogs got 18 points from Steadman Graleski as they beat #22 Baylor 66-56 to start the week. A 109-54 hammering of Arkansas two nights later should have moved TCU into the top 25 but it did not. Perhaps voters are looking at two early season losses to Holy Cross and New Orleans as proof that TCU is not as good as it's record indicates. A string of 5 straight road games beginning next week at Arkansas and Baylor will go a long ways towards determining just how much respect TCU deserves. Code:

Detroit picked up 4 points last week and it's hold on first place remains at 5 points over the second place New York Rangers. Boasting a balanced offense that can burn you so many ways, the Wings have been extremely difficult to stop this season. Playmaking center Billy Taylor leads the team with 31 points, most coming while setting up winger Roy Conacher for some of his team high 19 goals. Joining Conacher and Taylor on the big line has been Eddie Bruneteau, who already has 10 goals and is on pace for a career best output. If opposing teams choose to play a checking unit against those three then the trioka of Sid Abel, Ted Lindsay and Jim Conacher can roam free. Between them they have tallied 71 points. Rookie Gordie Howe is coming on strong and has increased his point total to 14 while playing alongside Gary Couture and Pete Horeck on the third unit. Detroit's weakness is defensive zone coverage as only lowly Chicago has surrendered more goals than the Red Wings. Harry Lumley is steady but certainly not spectacular between the pipes and the defense led by Bill Quakenbush is shaky at times. However, if the high-octane Detroit offense keeps reving on all cylinders the defensive shortcomings won't matter a bit. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL 1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE ST LOUIS BROWNS The only American League club never to win a pennant, the Browns are a consistant second division club. They have only finished as high as third twice in their 45 year history, and the last time was in 1911. The ace of a very mediocre pitching staff is 33 year old Tom Baker (19-16, 3.31) who enjoyed the most productive season of his career a year ago. Mace Brown had been a fixture in the rotation for several years but the 37 year old has decided to retire rather than attempt to rehab a back injury that cost him virtually the entire season a year ago. That leaves Archie McKain (13-14, 3.87), Sam Zoldak (8-11, 2.80), Frank Papish (14-14, 3.58), Al Williams (12-10, 3.87) and 22 year old Cliff Fanin (0-1, 5.23)to fight for the remaining 3 spots in the rotation. 28 year old Frank Mancuso (.224,4,34) and 25 year old Hank Riebe (.253,1,13) are an effective catching tandem. The infield has some talent with 36 year old first baseman George McQuinn (.282,10,70), 26 year old shortstop Vern Stephens (.260,10,47) and 34 year old Cookie Lavagetto (.281,7,45) at third base. With the retirement of Odell Hale there is a big hole at second. 36 year old Nig Lipscomb (.289,0,4) who saw limited action last season is a possible candidate to take over at second but a more likely move is for Lavagetto to shift to second and have 28 year old Bill Dillinger (.316,1,31) play third. 37 year old Bruce Campbell (.241,18,89) will join a pair of 30 year olds in the outfield. Wally Judnich (.269,11,59)has been unable to duplicate the numbers he put up in 1940 as a rookie while Milt Byrnes (.266,4,37) shows promise at times but has yet to have a true break-out year. OUTLOOK FOR 1947 - More of the same for the Browns. The pitching is terrible outside of Baker and there are not enough big bats to make up for it. 1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE WASHINGTON SENATORS What might have been. The Senators got off to a great start and led the American League through July. Even in early September Washington was still in the hunt but a late swoon cost the Senators a chance to repeat as American League champs and instead doomed them to a third place finish. The offense, already good, was made better by the exceptional season of 31 year old rookie Les Fleming (.333,4,43). The longtime minor leaguer won the American League batting crown and was named TSN rookie of the year. Second baseman Jerry Priddy (.288,7,51), shortstop Cecil Travis (.263,6,58) and third baseman Buddy Lewis (.314,8,86) form the best hitting infield in the league. Catcher Al Evans (.269,7,53) made his first all-star appearance last year and the outfield is very talented with Phil Cavarretta (.282,11,87), Mel Mazzera (.324,12,82) and Mike Chartak (.269,7,35). Joe Haynes (21-15, 3.08) and Joe Beggs (21-14, 3.57) give the Sens two number-one starters. Red Barrett (14-11, 3.15), Milo Candini (7-10, 3.65) and Tot Pressnell (11-10, 4.64) will also play key roles. OUTLOOK FOR 1947 - The Senators will once again be in the thick of things in 1947. If the bats are as good as they were last year and another pitcher can step up and perform like Haynes and Beggs, then Washington could run away with the pennant. continued

CHICAGO BEARS WIN NFL CHAMPIONSHIP! LUCKMAN'S TWO TD PASSES LEAD BEARS PAST CLEVELAND 34-20 Charlotte- The Chicago Bears won their first National Football League championship downing the Cleveland Browns 34-20. For the Bears it was the end of a dominating season that saw them go 14-2 during the regular season. It is also redemption for a surprising loss in last year's title game. The Browns deserve credit for a solid effort that, were it not for the final two minutes of the first half, could have resulted in a Cleveland victory. The game as it turns out was decided late in the first half. With 1:26 left before the break Chicago took over on the Bears 42 yard line with the score knotted at 10. On first down Bears QB Sid *Luckman found wide receiver Robert Feeley behind the defense on a streak pattern and Feeley took the ball 58 yards for a touchdown. After Arnie Curtis made the point after he lined up for the kick-off. Browns return man LaDamien McKellar caught the ball on his own 3 yard line and broke a couple of tackles before having the ball jarred loose Zek Duval. Chicago offensive tackle Paul Shedd scooped it up in full stride and sauntered 31 yards into the endzone. In a matter of 20 seconds of playing time the score changed from 10-10 to 24-10 in Chicago's favour. Cleveland never recovered. The Bears struck first to begin the game in vintage Luckman fashion. So often the Bears offense would lull you to sleep with little dink passes and runs only to all of a sudden go for broke and air it out. The result more often than not was a touchdown or at the very least a huge gain. In this case it was a touchdown as Luckman's third pass attempt of the game was a 70 yard touchdown strike to Matt Sikahema. Arnie Curtis would add a 30 yard field goal on the next possession and at the end of the first quarter it was 10-0 Chicago. The Browns made a game of it early in the second when Corey Dixon connected on a 48 yard field goal and on the next possession Bob Slaughter marched the Browns 71 yards in a drive that finished with a 1 yard touchdown strike to Zach Kruczek. Slaughter was a bit of a surprise starter. He had started 8 regular season games but injuries and sporadic play caused management to lose confidence in him. Other than a fourth quarter interception, he did nothing to hurt the Browns in this contest. Slaughter never made a big play when needed, in all honesty he is not that type of quarterback, but he was steady completing 20 of 36 passes for 156 yards. Luckman was named the game's MVP mainly on the strength of those two long touchdown passes. He completed just 16 of his 31 pass attempts and was sacked four times including twice by Browns pass rusher extraordinare Wayne *Millner. Nearly half of Luckman's 308 passing yards came on the two touchdown passes. Luckman was picked off twice but both occurred late in the contest when the game was out of reach. SCORING SUMMARY Code:

McKeller 2 8.0 0 9 0 COLLEGE BASKETBALL NEVER TO EARLY TO BEGIN TOURNEY TALK As January prepares to wind down we look ahead to the end of February for conference tournament week and then to the Big Show - March Madness. Certainly there is a lot of time left but it appears barring a major collapse Kentucky and NYU are locks for two of the four number one seeds. However, it is not the top of the brackets we want to focus on this week. Instead let's take a look much further down and see who is on the bubble and pay particular attention to teams that are normally a lock for the tournament but may have some trouble getting in this time around. North Carolina (12-7)- Winners of the first NCAA championship in 1932-33 the Tar Heels rarely miss post season action but an 0-4 record against top 25 clubs, including last week's 81-63 loss at home against North Carolina State, puts them in a bit of trouble this time around. Syracuse (12-8)- A long time fixture in the tournament throughout the 1930's and early 40's the Orangemen have fallen on hard times and missed it each of the last two years. With a young team - 3 of their five starters are freshmen or sophomores - it could be a third straight year of going to the NIT instead. Indiana (10-7)- National champions in 1936 and runner-up in both 1941 and 1942, the Hoosiers have also struggled of late missing postseason play altogether in 1945 and settling on an NIT bid last year. Junior guard Paul *Armstrong is one of the best players in the country but the supporting cast is weak. Princeton (12-7) - After making the tournament 10 of the first 12 years the Tigers have had to go to the NIT each of the last two seasons. A weak schedule coupled with some losses to very bad schools leads one to believe the only hope Princeton has of getting in is to win it's conference tournament. Oklahoma A&M (10-7)- A streak of 7 straight NCAA tournament appearances is in danger of coming to an end. With 4 trips to the Final Four including a title in 1933, this is one of the most storied schools in college basketball. A young team this year which included two freshman starters, the Cowboys got off to a terrible 2-5 start but have picked things up of late. Code:

ROCKET LAUNCHES FIVE PAST LEAFS GOALIE BRODA After suffering through an 8 game stretch when he only scored two goals, Maurice 'Rocket' Richard has taken his game to a new level over the past week and a half. The highlight was a 5-goal performance in a 7-4 victory over Turk Broda and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The offensive ouburst came right in the middle of a string of 5 games where Richard has scored at least one goal and lifts the Rocket's league leading total to 32 goals. Another scoring sensation is Chicago Black Hawks superstar center Max Bentley. Despite playing on the league's worst club Bentley has an outside chance of recording the first 100 point season in league history. Presently Bentley has 55 points in 34 games. Despite Richard's big game this week really belonged to the netminders as a total of 5 shutouts were recorded included two each from Boston's Frank Brimsek and Chuck Rayner of the Rangers. Brimsek's shutouts occurred in back to back games and he will look to make it three straight Wednesday night against Montreal. BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA CAPITOLS OPEN UP SMALL LEAD IN EAST The Washington Capitols moved 2 games ahead of the second place Philadelphia Warriors in the BAA East Division. Bob Feerick sank a buzzer beater yesterday to give the Capitols a 55-54 win over Chicago and complete a perfect 3-0 week. Feerick, averaging 17.6 points a game, is third in the league in score and unquestionably the leader of the Washington squad. Freddie Scolari and Horace McKinney are the other key offensive contributers. Philadelphia fell 2 games behind Washington after a tough double-overtime loss to Chicago at home. League scoring leader Joe Fulks poured in 34 of the Warriors points in an 80-75 loss to the Stags. Chicago is tied with St Louis atop the West Division, 1 game ahead of third place Cleveland. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL BRAVES EXPECTED TO DRAFT CATCHER WITH FIRST PICK The Boston Braves own the first pick in the inagural major league baseball draft which will be held at the league office in New York on Wednesday. (EDITOR'S NOTE - For the first 45 odd seasons I assigned rookies to their original teams in this league but I felt a draft would add some more content to my reports and also possibly balance the league a little.) Prior to this season major league baseball squads were free to scour the country and sign whoever they chose to a contract. That all change effective April 1st of last year. Major league teams will now take turns selecting players and the club that drafts a youngster will have exclusive rights to sign that player. A 21 year old St Louis native by the name of Lawrence Berra is expected to be the first player drafted. Berra, who goes by the nickname Yogi, appears to have allstar potential. Other possible early picks include 19 year old pitcher Art Houtteman from Detroit; Earl Torgeson, a 23 year old first baseman from Snohomish, Washington; and smooth hitting 22 year old outfielder Vic Wertz from York, Pennsylvania. BOXING ARAGON TAKES STEP CLOSER TO TITLE SHOT One of the more pleasant surprises during the postwar Lightweight qualifying tournament was the performance of a young Los Angeles native named Art Aragon. Just 20 years old Aragon was 12-4-1 in the tournament with all four of his losses coming against top 10 fighters. Aragon took a step closer to a title shot by breaking into the top 10 with a convincing 4th round TKO of Mexican Mario Trigo in Los Angeles on Friday. Dubbed boxing's Golden Boy, Aragon looks to be just two or three victories away from a possible title shot. Trigo's record drops to 13-4. On the same card, another Los Angeles fighter came up with a victory. Carlos Chavez improved his record to 24-11-1 with a majority decision over Tsuneo Horiguchi of Japan. It was a spirited affair that saw Chavez sent to the canvas twice and Horiguchi floored four times. The 25 year old Chavez had beat Horiguchi in a 15 round majority decision in Tokyo a year ago during the postwar elimination tournament. Horiguchi falls 28-10-2 with the loss. BOXING NEWS LOSS COSTS ELMER RAY TITLE SHOT Roscoe Toles moved a step closer to a shot at Heavyweight champion Joe Louis by derailing Elmer Ray's title bid. Toles won a unanimous decision in a spirited battle with the 37 year old Ray in Miami on Friday. Ray would have likely got a title match with Joe Louis in the fall had he won the bout. Instead, it appears the Florida native's career is nearing it's conclusion. Ray is 23-5 in his career with two of his losses coming at the hands of Toles. Many questioned his decision to fight Toles but rumour is Louis promised Ray a title shot if he would fight and beat fellow Detroiter Toles. Toles improves to 19-4 and being the fourth ranked contender in the heavyweight division may get a title matchup with his Detroit buddy Joe Louis a year from now. CERDAN CLAIMS EUROPEAN TITLE - NOW A FORCE IN MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION Marcel Cerdan is quickly become a force in the middleweight division. The Frenchman improved his record to 24-5 with a 12th round knockout of Randy Turpin in London, England over the weekend. The victory gives Cerdan the European Middleweight belt, a title Turpin held for just one bout. It is just the fourth loss of Turpin's career but it came as quite a shock. Turpin was intent on getting a shot at champion Tony Zale, who defeated Jake LaMotta last week. Turpin had beaten Zale during the post-war elimination tournament. Without the clout of a European belt it is unlikely Turpin will get another chance at Zale. Turpin does, however, still retain the British Middleweight title. COLLEGE BASKETBALL LITTLE CHANGE ATOP THE TSN POLL With just 4 weeks remaining in the college basketball season things seem to have stabilized atop the TSN poll. There is only one new entry in the top 10 this week as Iowa State creeps up from 11th to 10th after Ohio State suffered through a rough week. A 78-50 loss in Iowa dropped the Buckeyes to 15th and their lead in the Big 10 is down to a half game over Indiana. Kentucky, with in-conference blowout wins over Mississippi and Georgia remains the number 1 ranked team in the nation with unbeaten New York University right behind them. NYU had to rally to beat Navy 66-58 on the road last week but then had an easier time in Pittsburgh with a 76-50 win over Duquesne. Code:

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA WARRIORS AND STAGS BOTH HAVE BUSY WEEK BUT MIXED RESULTS The Philadelphia Warriors are paying for a lot of off time early in the season by playing a large number of back to back games recently, including a 5 game week this time around. The Warriors started strong with home wins over Boston and Cleveland sandwiched around a tough 56-51 loss to division leading Washington in the nation's capital. However, the week ended on a sour note as the Warriors lost two close games on the road - falling 71-67 in Detroit and 59-58 in Chicago. Speaking of Chicago, the Stags also had a tough week with four games on the slate. Chicago passed the test with flying colours winning all 4 games. On Monday, Chuck Halbert had 14 points to lead the Stags past Boston 65-52. Wednesday, Halbert scored 17 including the game winning basket in a 58-57 win in New York. After a long train ride home you could excuse the Stags if they came up flat against Providence. Instead they responded with one of their best efforts of the season, flatening the Steamrollers 71-55 behind 15 points each from Halbert and Max Zaslofsky. They rounded out the week with a 1 point win over Philadelphia on Sunday. Chicago is now 2 ahead of second place St Louis and 3 up on Cleveland in the West. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE BRUINS BACK IN THICK OF PLAYOFF HUNT Not long ago it looked like the Boston Bruins playoff chances were all but gone but what a difference a couple of weeks makes. Three weeks ago the 5th place Bruins trailed Montreal by 7 points in the race to make the top four and qualify for the postseason. The Bruins won 2 and tied one this week to give them a 5-1-1 record in their past 7 games and more importantly allowed them to creep to within one point of 4th place Montreal and just 2 back of third place Toronto. During the same stretch the Bruins won 5 of 7 Montreal managed just 2 wins and the slumping Leafs only one. Boston's two victories came in a home and home series against Montreal. Bobby Bauer scored two goals and Frank Brimsek made 34 saves as the Bruins won 5-1 at the Gardens on Wednesday. On Saturday in Montreal, Brimsek was named the games first star after making 43 saves in a 4-2 Boston win. Woody Dumart had a pair of goals for the winners. On Sunday, the Bruins played well in a 2-2 tie at home against Detroit. Toronto, on the other hand, is in a terrible slump. The Leafs have lost 5 straight and 9 of their last 12 games. On the weekend both New York and lowly Chicago had their way with the struggling Leafs. Chuck Rayner and the Rangers blanked Toronto 2-0 Saturday in the Leafs own building. Rayner stopped all 34 shots he faced for his 5th shutout of the season, tying him with Montreal's Bill Durnan for the lead in that category. The Rangers have closed to within 3 points of first place Detroit atop the league standings. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT BRAVES NAB TORGESON FIRST OVERALL, BERRA SLIPS TO THIRD To the surprise of many the Boston Braves passed on catching phenom Yogi Berra and selected slugging first baseman Earl Torgeson with the first overall pick in the inagural major league baseball draft. Most expected the Braves to snap up Berra, a highly touted catcher out of St Louis. Instead the chose to go with Torgeson, who has tremendous power hitting potential. With slugger Rudy York entrenched at first it remains to be seen where Torgeson will play but he is expected to be on the major league roster come opening day. The lowly Chicago White Sox took a step to improve their sad-sack offense by selecting 25 year old Texan Ferris Fain with the second pick. The first baseman will almost certainly be in the opening day lineup and while he does not seem to have great power potential he should hit for average. Surprised he was available the New York Giants immediately grabbed Berra with the third pick. The 21 year old may need a year of seasoning but will be given a chance to compete for the starting job. Rounding out the top 5 the Athletics selected OF Wally Westlake while the Browns nabbed another outfielder, Vic Wertz. In a weak draft for hurlers the first pitcher was not selected until late in the second round when Brooklyn took Larry Jansen. BOXING NEWS LOUIS SET TO DEFEND WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE All eyes in the boxing community will be focused on Detroit's Olympia Stadium next Friday when World Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis puts his perfect post-war record of 8-0 on the line against 3rd ranked contender Nathan Mann. Judging by their previous meeting, a 3rd round knockout for Louis in Indianapolis just over a year ago in the post-war qualifying tournament, this should be an easy night for the champion. However, as Jake LaMotta found out a couple of weeks ago when he was upset by Tony Zale for the middleweight belt, you can't take anything for granted. Still the 32 year old Louis looks to be unbeatable. 8 straight wins, all by knockout and half of them in 4 rounds or less. Mann, a 32 year old from Hamden, Connecticut is 18-4-1 and has won 14 of his bouts by knockout. In boxing action over the weekend Billy Smith upset up-and-coming lightheavyweight contender Jimmy Slade with a third round KO. Slade, who now has a 23-7-1 record, looked ill prepared and out of shape and as a result never had a chance against journeyman Smith. The 22 year old Slade was looking at this bout as a stepping stone towards getting a shot at one of the top 5 of 6 contenders in the division. Instead it is Atlantic City native Smith who may get that opportunity after delighting the hometown crowd with a win over the young New Yorker. Smith, nicknamed Boardwalk, improves to 14-9 with the win. Jimmy Doyle scored a 15 round majority decision over Frankie Fernandez in the headliner of a Saturday fight card in San Francisco. The 23 year old Doyle improves to 14-4 and is ranked the 9th best welterweight fighter in the world. 28 year old Honolulu native Fernandez falls to 21-6. On the same card former Olympic medal winner Simon Vegara from Panama improved to 37-6-2 as a pro with a 15 round decision over Pedro Hernandez. Vegara is ranked 8th in the featherweight division worldwide. In Britian, 21 year old bantamweight Jimmy Green fought to a 15-round draw in his first pro fight against veteran Sammy Reynolds. Reynolds is 13-26-2. Another debut of sorts was a little more successful. 36 year old heavyweight Alf Robinson, who last saw action prior to WWII, looked good in his postwar debut winning by a 9th round TKO over 35 year old James Wilde. Neither fought chose to participate in the post war elimination tournament but each had a change of heart recently. Finally in Denmark Carl Nielsen dropped Pierre Van Deuren of the Netherlands with a 5th round KO. A newcomer to professional boxing at age 28, Nielson evens his record at 1-1 and his camp is eyeing a shot at Bruce Woodcock and the European Heavyweight title in the near future. LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT SET FOR FEBRUARY 23 IN NEW YORK World Lightweight champ Ike Williams will defend his title against Joe Brown Friday February 23rd at New York's Madison Square Garden. The 24 year old Williams is a perfect 18-0 including title defense wins over Ronnie James and Enrique Bolanos. The Trenton, New Jersey has 16 knockouts to his credit. His 21 year old opponent hails from New Orleans and has a postwar record of 12-2 and has climbed to 3rd in the world rankings. The knock on Brown is that he has not faced top level opponents and many feel his weaknesses will be quickly exposed by the veteran Williams. Williams reportedly passed on a rematch with Enrique Bolanos to take an easier payday against Brown. Bolanos has 14 victories to go with his only loss against Williams in the final of the lightweight postwar title tourney. Bolanos has apparently settled on a bout with 5th ranked Rudy Cruz that will likely take place in March in either Los Angeles or perhaps Mexico City. COLLEGE BASKETBALL NYU LOSES TWO IN A ROW After starting the season 21-0 New York University suffered two setbacks last week and may not win their conference regular season title. A Thursday loss to Army was extremely shocking as the Black Knights overcame a 21 point deficiet to hand NYU it's first loss of the season 94-88. Two days later NYU was beaten again, this time by rival CCNY 69-66. The CCNY game was pegged as hurdle that NYU would have to overcome in it's quest for a perfect season so that loss is quite understandable but the collapse against Army left everyone in the Eastern Independant League dumbfounded. Holy Cross appears to be the school that could benefit the most from the Army upset. The Crusaders are now tied with NYU for the conference lead at 8-2. Holy Cross is also ranked 4th in the TSN Poll after an overtime win at 12th ranked CCNY on Monday and an easy win over Army on Saturday. Holy Cross and NYU play each other twice in the four remaining conference games for each school including next Wednesday at NYU. Code:

Washington 16-9 163 34 Dropped out of Top 25: No. 24 Western Kentucky, No. 25 Alabama BUCKEYES FALLING OUT OF BIG 10 RACE After starting the Big 10 schedule 7-1 the Ohio State Buckeyes have lost 4 straight conference games and if they are not careful they could miss the NCAA tournament altogether. The Buckeyes have gone from a 16-3 record and a possible 2 seed in the tournament to 17-7 with some tough games ahead which means there is a chance they could miss the tournament altogether if they can't turn things around quickly. After making the elite 8 a year ago, fans in Columbus expected big things from this year's edition of the Buckeyes and the team delivered early in the season. Led by senior forwards Paul *Huston and Allen Dykema the Buckeyes advanced to the final of the preseason Hawaiian Classic before losing to Kentucky. They dominated opponents in November and December and got off to a strong start once the conference games began but then everything fell apart two and half weeks ago. Blown out on the road by Michigan, Iowa and Northwestern the string of losses reached 4 with an 80-68 Saturday defeat at the hands of #22 Illinois. The 12 point deficeit was the closest Ohio State has been in any of the four losses. BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA FEERICK LEADS CAPITOLS TO 9TH STRAIGHT WIN The Washington Capitols are quickly make the East Division a one team race. Behind solid play from team scoring leader Bob Feerick, the Capitols won 4 games last week to increase their winning streak to 9 in a row. That has allowed Washington to open a 5.5 game lead on second place Philadelphia. Feerick, a 27 year old guard who hails from San Francisco, had 3 straight 20 point games last week and his 17.5 ppg is third best in the league. Coach Red Aurebach is also getting strong play from Feerick's backcourt mate Freddie Scolari and forward Horace McKinney. In the West Division it remains a three team battle between Chicago, St Louis and Cleveland. Ed Sadowski of the Rebels had big week, scoring 88 points in 4 games but his performance could not prevent the Rebels from losing 3 of their 4 contests including a pair of 1 point losses to St Louis and Washington. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE THREE TEAMS FIGHTING FOR FINAL TWO PLAYOFF SPOTS With the NHL season just passing the two-thirds mark an exciting race is developing as Boston, Montreal and Toronto do battle for the final 2 playoff spots. Just 2 points seperate the 3 clubs and each has 18 games left to play. The Bruins are getting offense from each of their top two lines. The Kraut Line of Milt Schmidt (34pts), Woody Dumart (29) and Bobby Bauer (28) is starting to carry the team after a slow start. The second line of Bill Cowley (37), Joe Carveth (34) and Bep Guidolin (19) has been solid all season. Boston is also getting solid goaltending from Frank Brimsek. Montreal is being carried almost exclusively by the goaltending of Bill Durnan and the offensive prowess of Rocket Richard and his linemates on the Punch Line. Richard, with 41 goals leads the NHL in that category and seems a lock to break the mark of 50 he set two seasons ago. The schedule is now 10 games longer than it was when he set the record so it will be closely watched to see if the Rocket can get to the 50 goal mark before his 50th game. Linemates Toe Blake and Elmer Lach have helped the Rocket by combining for 50 assists. Toronto is a young team carrying 3 rookies on defense and 3 more up front. As you might expect from a young squad the Leafs have lacked consistancy, going on a good winning streak in December but suffering through a terrible January. Ted Kennedy and rookie Howie Meeker are two of the big guns offensively while Turk Broda has been steady between the pipes. MEEKER LEADS CALDER TROPHY RACE Leaf winger Howie Meeker seems to have had no trouble adjusting to the pace of the National Hockey League. The 23 year old from Kitchener leads all first year players with 19 goals and 31 points and appears to be a lock for the rookie of the year award. Other rookies who are playing well include Meeker's teammates Vic Lynn and Bill Barilko. Lynn is second in rookie scoring with 23 points while Barilko has been a force on the Toronto blueline. Highly touted teenager Gordie Howe is holding his own in Detroit. The 18 year old winger from Floral, Saskatchewan has 11 goals and 10 assists for the Red Wings. At +12 and second on the team in plus-minus, Howe has shown he is not a liability defensively. He also has shown a willingness to get involved physically. Despite being the youngest player in the league Howe has 45 penalty minutes. Montreal rookie Leo Gravelle had a hot start, notching a hat trick in his NHL debut and scoring 9 goals in his first 8 games but he has cooled off since then. Still, at only 22 years of age, he has a bright future. continued
