my lineup goes like this
1. good base hitter with speed 2. similar to #1 but not as good at hitting and or speed 3. Best guy at getting a hit 4. Best HR hitter unless he is in the #3 spot then 5-9 I just put in order of most power to least power. Simple as that. |

I use Bill James' "Principles of Good Batting Order," and the lineups look a lot like Sporr's.

I usually do it this way, and heres an example.
1. speed/stealing, avg - (Jose Reyes SS) 2. contact, good gap hitter, great eye. - (David Wright 3b) 3. Best all around hitter contact, power, eye - (Mike Piazza 1b) 4. Dont care about contact, just power and eye - (Adam Dunn lf) 5. Next best hitter either like #3 or 4. - (Richard Hidalgo rf) 6. Good contact hitter and gap power. - (Mike Cameron cf) 7. Leftover/young guy/preferably a speedy guy with decent power. (Rickie Weeks 2b) 8. I usually put a great defensive catcher here who may not be the best hitter - (Vance Wilson c) Thats my lineup in a sim im doing.

I set my order like this:
Cross the player off the list of whatever (OPS, OBP, Power, etc) once he's placed 3. Best OPS 4. Best OPS 1. Best speed/steal, unless OBP is lower than 2nd. Best OBP otherwise, but if I have to do this, I'll bust my b@lls to acquire someone else who fits. I'm just not comfortable having no speed at the top. 2. Best contact, unless OBP is lower than 2nd. Best OBP otherwise. 8. Best Speed. 5. Best OBP 6. Best OPS 7. Whoever's left I like having speed hitting 8th. He will almost invariably steal when he gets on with 1 out or less. The worst that can happen is that he gets caught, P makes last out, and we start next inning at the top of the order. Indeed, it's not uncommon for me to have 8th and 1st platoon the leadoff position depending upon the opposing SP.

The computer manager will fill its lineups in this order: 3,4,5,1,2 This can put some pretty bad (or slow, regardless of Leadoff setting) hitters at the top of the lineup, because that's all that's left. A #5 hitter will get 80 less PAs than the #1 hitter over a season, so I think it would be an improvement to fill the lineups 3,4,1,2,5.

It is a pet peeve of mine as well, when I see a leadoff guy hitting .212, with an OBP of .280.
What is this, the Mets? Give me Rickey any day. |
