After the 162th game, the standings for my league looked like this:
Division A Orange Walk 81-81 Belize City 81-81 3 Teams worse than that Division B Hancock 101-61 Lake Linden 82-80 4 Teams worse than that Division C Redondo Beach 83-79 Manhattan Beach 83-79 El Segundo 82-80 2 Teams worse than that Obviously, Orange Walk and Belize City should play a one game playoff for the Division A title and they did. Here's the thing, the game set up a one game playoff between my team, Redondo Beach, and Manhattan Beach. That's not supposed to happen right? We are both playoff teams and there shouldn't be a one game playoff just to decide who's the division winner and who's the wild card. Thinking I'm missing something, I use my third best starter (it was his turn in the rotation) in the one game playoff to do my best to win the game, which I do, leaving the standings looking like this: Division A Orange Walk 82-81 Belize City 81-82 Division B Hancock 101-61 Lake Linden 82-80 Division C Redondo Beach 84-79 Manhattan Beach 83-80 El Segundo 82-80 The game structures the playoffs as: Orange Walk v Hancock and Redondo Beach v Manhattan Beach. This isn't right either. The wild card team should not play a team in the same division and the wild card team should play the team with the best record (Hancock). Neither of these things happened. The final insult: During the my one game playoff that should have never happened, my starting pitcher is hurt for 5 weeks, meaning I lost him for the whole playoffs. Ouch. Let's just say that after investing myself in this season, I was dissappointed that the game mishandled the end so badly. |

All I know is that Redondo team better beat up on those Starbuck drinking, Skecher wearing, BMW driving snobs from Manhattan Beach.
![]() Incidentally, are you from the South Bay or did you just grab those city names from somewhere?

Indeed I am from the South Bay. The other two teams in that division are Hermosa Beach and Palos Verdes.

Considering some recent threads in the bugs forum, I think you should count yourself lucky that you got any one-game playoffs between the first place clubs.

there should have been that one game playoff (as I understand things) to determine the wild card and division winner. Where the game erred would have been in putting you playing each other in the playoffs rather than the other teams. Of course I could be completely wrong... I also started a league using teams from my area (northern Ohio) and it does make it seem a ton more engrossing.

The one game playoffs are correct. As for the playoff seeding of wild card not in same division, I was under the impression that it's always been that way in the game. That is, it was never coded to consider what division the teams were in because of the potential problems it could cause in some custom setups.

Actually, the original poster is correct. They don't play a one-game playoff (in R/L) when both teams will make the postseason anyway. From MLB.com:

^^^ He has it right. If two clubs are simultaneously tied for both the division title and the wildcard spot, there is no playoff game. The team with the better record in head-to-head competition is awarded the division pennant while the other club is considered the wildcard. (This actually happened in the NL Central in 2001.)
As to the matchups in the first round, OOTP does not follow the MLB rule stating that two teams from the same division cannot meet in the Division Series. OOTP just matches the teams based on their records without regards to their division, so that's something you'll just have to live with for the time being. |
