What is the most you have ever paid a free agent?

I paid a 33 year old Roy Halladay $25.3 mil for 3 years. He was coming off a 20 win, 2.75 ERA season where he won the Cy Young. Usually, I would never spend that much money on any one player, but I had a 44 million dollar surplus of money. Was it worth it? Well, I did win the World Series the next season.

Back in OOTP5, I signed Pedro Martinez to a 6-year, $120 million contract. Most i've ever payed for a FA in OOTP6 is Kevin Millwood's $21 million over 3 years.

I've seen the AI shell out some big contracts, though. The Angels signed Andy Pettitte for 5 years at over $19 million per year.

The most I've ever seen the AI sign someone for was something like $36 million per year. It was an idiotic, ridiculous signing, even if it did bring what was arguably the league's best player in its history to the team. They simply could not keep the guy and remain competitive. They didn't have enough for any other good players.

The most I've ever paid was, I think, just over $20 million, a few times. Usually, it's a mistake.

I play with a $72 million dollar cap so I don't usually offer a lot, but I did give my ace pitcher a 5 year $12 million deal.

My first year and I just paid $13.1 million per for 6 years. One of the best pitchers in the league (fictional) and he's age 32.

6.5 Million x 5 Years to Matt Clement, he didn't fit the bill and was traded 2 seasons later.

After 4 seasons of having the worst pitching staff in the majors, I decided to make a splash and go after the best pitcher in Free Agency, 30-year old Roy Oswalt. After a lot of bidding with the AI teams, I landed him with this offer:

6 years @ 23,000,000 per year!!!

After two seasons, I have 46 million reasons to weep and regret about it. Here's why:

Being the Phillies, I am in the homer-happy place known as Citizen's Bank Park. Oswalt went 22-7 in his last season in Houston, a 3.12 era and the Walter Johnson Award! The first season in Philly, he goes 12-13, 4.09 and the next year: 9-14, 4.13. His WHIP was 1.11 and 1.23, respectively, which is respectable. However, he has surrendered 37 HRs each of those seasons. Home vs Road ERA for this past season: 5.07 to 3.35... A one-time lock for the HOF, he can now only hope to go there as a tourist :-((

In one of my online leagues I signed a sure fire Hall of Fame CF to a $20,050,000 long term deal. He has won back to back MVPs and I won my first division title in the previous season and have the best record in the NL currently. Well worth the money. In my solo league I signed a SP for $18,000,000. He is 6-1 after two months, the jury is still out.

17 million over 4 years (which averages out to $4,250,000 per) for outfielder and utilityman Frank Cattalanatto. Seemed a little steep at first but playing in Colorado must have been a boost for his career as a the all-star break he is batting .301 with 9 HR and 47 RBI with 10 SB, not to mention that he solidified the 2-spot in th lineup and can play 5 different positions. So far so good.

The most I've ever paid for a FA, and something my friend who was in the league will never let me forget, was $25 million over 10 years for Pedro Martinez.

The idea was to have a 1-2 punch with my rookie phenom, James Moss, who, at 20 years old, already had a scouting report and ratings fitting "truly in a class by himself". But then my usual bad luck stepped in. Pedro took a ratings hit after the first season and dropped from 10's across the board, to 7's and 6's. And Moss got an "out for season" injury as well.

All in all, a terrible pick up, since Pedro's ratings were just average after season 1, and I was on the hook for 9 more years of his $25 million contract, which I couldn't unload because it was too high for every other team.

I vowed never to sign a player for more than $10 million after that.

When you say mistake, do you mean that you accidentally slipped a decimal place? I did that with Season Ticket Baseball. I thought I was offering the guy $2 million, when instead I slipped the decimal and gave him $20 million. In that game, there were no "Are you sure?" prompts, so I discovered the hard way how you have to count out the zeroes.

But, as this was my first OOTPB season ever, and I was an encyclopedia of baseball at that time, I figured I would just boost ticket prices to afford the player. I figured $17 per ticket was reasonable, as this was what I paid to see the real life Mariners. Not long afterwards, the crowds dropped to about the 5,000 mark. Okay, $17 per ticket was too much. I would just lower the ticket price... I tried clicking on the button, and the price went up to $18. I tried right clicking to lower the price, and that didn't work. I figured there must be a hidden pixel to press to lower the price, so I clicked all over the screen. In something of a panic, I decided to click the price button again. $19... well that didn't work. Try again... $20. No luck, no luck at all. I imagined that the price could go up into the $100's for a single ticket. So I decided to cut my losses and stop pressing buttons. My fan base dropped to around 1,500. The income dried up, and my team was royally screwed for that season. And about 15 seasons after that.

It wasn't until several weeks of real time had passed that I finally realized that the ticket price button scrolls back to $1 past $20.

That $20 million player was my most expensive free agent, but on the other hand, I really learned a lesson about OOTPB.
