Olympic Boxing
Anyone else getting excited about Olympic boxing? Normally I wouldn't because the coverage ends up being "just throw it on when there's time". But the coverage (in the US anyway), NBC is really using all of their stations to show the Olympics and MSNBC will be show 3 hours of Olympic boxing every night starting tomorrow (well, today, Saturday). So I'm really looking forward to it. Who do you think are the boxers to watch?

Canuck kid is losing to Cuban in which he is outweighed by at least 10 lbs. thanks to redistribution of weight classes.

Thanks |

From what I saw today the fights were really entertaining to watch. I saw a lot of middleweight bouts and a handful of light heavyweight fights and was really impressed with some fighters. What has surprised me is just how many southpaw's there are! At times it seemed that there were more left handers than orthodox fighters!

I was impressed with Oleg Mashkin, who came back from quite a few points behind. He never gave up, and when his opponent tired Mashkin took control very well. The first fight of the day was one of the best, I can't remember the name of the winner but he also really impressed me. I'm looking forward to Monday when Britain's Amir Khan begins his trip towards a gold medal in the lightweight division!

Every time I try to watch I get really annoyed by the scoring system.
I guy who throws one punch at a time will get more points than someone who throws a bunch. Am I the only one who sees it like this? Wanderer |

Three hours of boxing a night? Yes, I like it quite a lot.
I'm a very international type of guy and so I really love seeing fighters from a variety of countries compete. |

It isn't about the big punch but rather the clean solid punch (white portion of gloves)
But the puncher still has a chance.

I'm hearing that Canadian light heavyweight Trevor Stewardson was ahead after three rounds, but was fouled repeatedly by his Egyptian opponent in the 4th. The Polish ref did nothing. What's the story?

Well, for what it's worth, it was a clear 22-38 loss.
So the bad refereeing would only have had consequences if there should have been a DQ. Actually the Egyptian was leading 26-16 after three rounds. |

I enjoyed watching the Russian young man Alexsandr Maleikin (my spelling is probably wrong). I liked his style. The shaved head is kind of cool also. Unfortunately, he was eliminated.

Well in the post fight interview just now, he was talking about competing in the 2008 games with his kid brother, currently aged 13, but of course that might change if people start waving money at him. 17 is a bit young for a pro fighter these days though.
