Back after a long delay while I worked on other dynasty reports.

FRIDAY JUNE 16, 1952
The Bees do little in my first game after a couple of weeks away from the Western League. We open a 3-game set in New Orleans and Pelicans ace Odis Fickes (13-3, 2.45) makes us look silly. He retires the first 11 Bee's hitters before a walk and a Carlos Alvarez double give us a brief 1-0 lead. The Pelicans take the lead in the bottom of the 4th on a 2-run homer from Marion Porras. The man known as 'The Surgeon' has now hit 14 roundtrippers this season. The Pelicans chase our starter Harry Carter (6-3, 2.74) with a 3-run 6th inning and cruise to a 6-2 win. Oh well, at least the bullpen did not let me down this time.

SATURDAY JUNE 17, 1952
Richard Johnson allows just 1 run over 8 innings and despite a bit of a scare in the 9th James Green earns the save as we beat the Pelicans 4-1. Johnson was outstanding at the plate as well going 3-for-3 but all our offense came from a fourth inning outburst that included rbi singles from Carlos Alvaraz, David Esparza and Michael Desrochers. Johnson improves to 4-3 with the win. Green allowed 2 hits and got a circus catch from Desrochers to curtail a New Orleans rally so his 9th save was barely a positive effort.

The win leaves us tied with Denver for 2nd place, 2.5 games back of the Pelicans. Kansas City is also in the thick of things, just 3 off the pace. Out West San Diego has built a 6.5 game lead on Seattle.

In the minors, David McMullin made his AAA debut for San Antonio and went 0-for-3 but he did draw a pair of walks. My other two stud prospects are at AA Topeka. Manny Amaral is 4-4 with a 4.02 era and seems to be adjusting to that level of competition. The 21 year old may just get a shot at AAA late in the year. 24 year old catcher Andrew Sistrunk is now hitting .239 and as much as I would like to move him up a level I may have to wait until next season.

I am not going to stop the 46 thread. I should have explained better that I am just going to slow things down a little with it. In fact I am very addicted to it as I want to see how things are going to play out. It just seemed like there was not a huge interest in it compared to some of my other threads. Regardless of the interest it is something that I will continue playing out for a long time.

There are some great stories starting to develop in it like in college football whether or not I have Army accept a bowl bid and play #2 ranked Georgia. Who will win the Rose Bowl between Michigan and UCLA. Can Charles Trippi of Georgia top real life winner Glen Davis of Army for the Heisman?

The NFL season is winding down and the big question is can anyone stop Sid Luckman and the unbeaten Chicago Bears? Detroit has a poor past but a promising future with young QB Bob Waterfield and a revamped offensive line led by rookie Marion Motley. Denver is in the midst of an incredible turnaround and may prove to be the class of the AFC.

In the NHL Montreal and Detroit are stepping out to an early lead. The Canadiens have received unbelievable goaltending from Bill Durnan and have the legendary Rocket Richard on a 50 goal season pace. At the other end of the spectrum are the Chicago Black Hawks, who are awful aside from their superstar center Max Bentley.

In the BAA the Chicago Stags and St Louis Bombers are off to a quick start but a relative unknown ex-high school coach named Red Aurebach has the Washington Capitols firing on all cylinders.

Boxing wise there are some great matchups coming in the New Year as Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake Lamotta all return to the ring. To top it all off there is another baseball season just around the corner as Jackie Robinson makes his major league debut. Meanwhile golf fans can look forward to a resumption of the Ryder Cup after a long interuption due to WWII

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Cleaning up some hard drive space I went and deleted the active version of my league. I have back ups but they are from opening day or early May. Nothing any where near mid-June that I was at. I can't believe I did this. I don't know what I was thinking. I had a number of variations of my Western.lg folder with similiar names and I deleted the wrong one. Now I have to decide if I go back to mid May and resume from there. This sucks.

It is total user error. Not the games fault at all. That's what I get for talking on the phone and tidying things up on my HD at the same time.

Ouch....don't feel bad....The first league I ever started in OOTP back in OOTP 3....I had played through that year...imported to OOTP 4 after it came out.....played through that year......and when I get to OOTP 5...I decided to uninstall my OOTP 4 and delete the files. I was more thinking of it as normal HD clean up and I wanted to delete some things before I defrag and go to bed. Anyway....I forgot to import it into OOTP 5 before I did that.....I couldn't get into another solo league at all till OOTP 6. I still got my moneys out of OOTP 5 though through Historical replays and online leagues.

The previous two stories are why I never clean up my hard drive, and instead let it become hopelessly cluttered.

Hey Tiger Fan,

First off, I love the handle, I too am a Tiger fan! I had a couple questions. I know you recieved the file for the face generator from DreamTeams, but the link DreamTeams has is for a site that sells a face generator application that sells for a couple hundred dollars! YIKES! You mentioned something about a template? Do you have a link or copy of this file? If so could you pass that along? I would love to use it for my own fictional league, I think it adds a new level of Immersion.

Sorry to hear about your hard drive error. I hope that you don't get discouraged and stop the thread, as I find this Dynasty report very entertaining and I am inspired to start my own as well.

Ouch!

Too bad, TF. You had a good thing going. If you're anything like me, you won't be able to go back to it now.

Reading through this thread - the first Dynasty thread I've visited in a long time, has put me in the mood to do one myself and really get into a league. Thanks, TF!

You are right ctorg. I just cant bring myself to go back to it after the file deletion. I am going to continue to focus on my all-sports historical dynasty. Hopefully it will inspire a few people as the Salt Lake City Bees did.

slucido3 - sorry to take so long to reply. check out the mods forum for some great templates or send a pm to deft.

Well, after finishing in the top 10 of Yoda's rankings I figured I would do as he suggested and dust off my old backup copy and sim out several seasons to see how the prospects turned out.

Here is the first of a couple updates I will do:

First off here is how Salt Lake finished up the '52 season. They improved by 9 games over the previous season and finished at 76-78. If not for losing 4 of their final 5 the Bees could have been a .500 club. Believe it or not, our pitching was our saving grace. I was so worried about it at the beginning of the season but we finished with the best ERA in the Mountain League. Baxter won 23 games while Herron (17-16, 3.52) and Carter (15-10, 2.59) pitched very well for us.

Denver seemed to have the pennant wrapped up before a late September collapse and New Orleans made up 4 games in the final week and a half to force a one game playoff. The Pelicans won and then took the Western Series in 6 games against Hollywood.

As for the prospects. My big choice was whether I selected 3B Samuel Williams or high school pitcher Tommy Clauson over David McMullin with the second pick in the draft. After much debate I decided on McMullin. Here is how each of the 3 did in 1952 as well as number one pick Brad Cousin.

McMullin was called up by the Bees in September and hit a pair of homers while batting .232 in 20 games. He is ranked the 9th best prospect in the Western Association.

Cousin got called up in August by San Francisco and hit .310 with 8 homers and 18 rbi's in 37 games.

Clauson, just 20 years old was 14-8 with a 2.87 era for Class A Lubbock. Houston kept him in A ball all season.

Williams is just 19 and spent the full year in A ball, hitting .242 with 13 homers and 51 rbi's.

POST 1955
My pick looks pretty good now

McMullin won the Mountain League rookie of the year award in 1953 hitting .281 with 24 homers and 67 rbi's. He also stole a Western Association record 82 bases which came as a real surprise because I dont remember focusing on his speed at all (I was playing with all ratings turned off). He has made 3 straight allstar games and has a .283 career average with 81 career homers. He is 26 years old.

Williams is still only 22 and just made his debut in the big leagues this season, hitting .250 in 17 games. Obviously the jury is still out on him.

Cousin, who I did not get a chance to draft because he went first overall, was the Pacific Coast League rookie of the year in 1953 and has made 2 allstar teams. A career .289 hitter he, just like McMullin has 81 career homers so far.

Which brings us to Tommy Clauson. The high school pitcher I was so close to taking has yet to play in the major leagues. He has just turned 23 but has been traded once (from Houston to Vancouver) and missed the last half of the 1955 season with a ruptured tricep. His era has climbed as he has advanced through the minors culminating with a 7-7, 5.40 performance before the injury this season.

I will update each of these 4 players in another 5 seasons.

Finally worth mentioning are Manny Amaral and Andrew Sistrunk. My two best prospects are now starring in the Western Association...unfortunately not with Salt Lake. The stupid cpu gm moved Amaral to the pen and after wasting him there for a year finally dealt him to Portland. He won 19 games for the Ducks this past season and at 24 years of age appears on the verge of greatness.

Sistrunk never got a fair shake with the Bees, the cpu gm kept him in the minors far too long before releasing him after just 9 hitless at bats with the big club. He was signed by the Oakland Oaks prior to the 1955 season and hit .322 in 107 games with the Oaks. Interesting note is his first career Western Association hit came off his old minor league battery-mate Manny Amaral. Sistrunk is 27 years old now and while I dont think he will be a superstar he certainly looks like a solid major league catcher.

It is now 1968 and Salt Lake still has not won another league title. When I took over in 1962 it had been 20 years since their last pennant and in the 16 years since the best they have to show for it is 2 second place finishes. Of course, had they not traded away my four prize prospects everything could have been different. Oh, well. Hindsight, you gotta love it.

Here is how the top 4 picks of the 1952 draft look 16 years later:

First overall pick Brad Cousin spent 11 seasons in the league as an everyday second baseman. He appeared in 1616 games with San Francisco and Houston, batting .264 with 231 career homers before retiring after being released in 1964. He won the rookie of the year award in 1953 and enjoyed his best season the following year when he hit a career best .311 and made the second of his 3 career all-star appearances. Ratings are turned off so I am not sure what happened but he just never took the next step as his averaged slumped to .262 his third season and he would hover around that mark most of his career. After 7 seasons in the Seals organization Cousin signed with Houston in 1959 but hit as many as 20 homers and batted over .255 just once in his 5 years with the Buffaloes. He was traded back to San Francisco in 1963 but would hit just .176 that season and was released early the following year.

It is nice to see just how great David McMullin turned out, I only wish it was with Salt Lake. First his career numbers, he is still active in 1968 at age 39 and is the alltime leader in stolen bases with 852 ( by more than 100 over number 2). McMullin also has 459 career homers and ranks 9th in that category while he is 13th in rbi's with 1375 and 4th alltime in runs scored with 1603. He has 2078 hits and a career batting average of .261.

An 11-time allstar in his 14 full season, McMullin won a rookie of the year award and 2 gold gloves in rightfield. The stupid cpu GM of Salt Lake traded him midway through his 4th straight allstar season in 1956. He went to Denver for Shawn Dial, a then 34 year old who it was hoped would get the Bees into the Series. It didn't happen and Dial left as a free agent the following year and ended up with a career 135-135 record. McMullin, meanwhile, had 2 great seasons in Denver before signing with San Francisco as a free agent where he would play out the rest of his career.

Tommy Clauson - It would be 6 years and 3 organizations before Clauson made his Western Association debut. He was 13-19 his first full season and actually won 22 games in 1963 but in truth he never developed into the stud pitcher many had expected. Clauson bounced from team to team suiting up for 9 different Western Association clubs. He made two allstar appearances - the previously mentioned 22 win season in 1963 and in 1967 when at the age of 35 he went 19-14 with a 4.20 era for 7th place San Francisco. He was 15-18 for the Seals this past season and has a career record of 145-124 with a 4.23 era. His best moment came in the 1964 Western Series when he pitched a complete game 8-hitter as Oakland won game 6 of the series 4-1. His victory helped the Oaks come back from a 3-0 series deficeit and win the series in 7 games. It was Oakland's first championship since 1935.

Fourth overall pick Samuel Williams is still active at age 35 and has spent his entire career in Albuquerque winning one gold glove at third base and a Western Series title in 1962. He has a .299 career average and made two allstar game appearances including in 1961 when he hit a career best .334.

As for my prospects I inherited with Salt Lake.

Manny Amaral has, as expected, developed into one of the best starting pitchers in the game. He has thrown a no-hitter and won 2 King Hurler Awards plus made 8 allstar teams. He ranks 22nd alltime in wins with a 271-172 record and stands a decent chance to reach 300. He is now 37 years old and coming off a 16-18 season for a middle of the road Seattle team. How could the Bees move him to the pen and then give up on him entirely?

Michael Desrochers, my young shortstop with plenty of potential, also had a solid career. In fact he is still active at age 39 and playing for the Bees, although he just was acquired 14 years after they dealt him to Phoenix. A 6-time allstar, Desrochers has 2431 career hits (22nd most alltime) and a lifetime batting average of .300. He won 5 gold gloves and 3 Western Series titles, all the championships coming while with Dallas, where he signed after his stint in Phoenix.

Catcher Andrew Sistrunk retired after the 1966 season. He enjoyed a solid career split between Oakland and Seattle. Sistrunk played over 1500 games and had a career batting average of .301. A 7-time allstar he became the only catcher ever to lead the Pacific Coast League in batting when he hit .351 in 1961. Never outstanding defensively behind the plate, his career probably could have been prolonged had Sistrunk been moved to first base or the outfield as numerous injuries dogged him late in his career. Sistrunk hit for the cycle in a 1963 game and batted .350 in his only Western Series to help Seattle win in 6 games.

Thanks for the update Tigerfan!

I really enjoyed this dynasty. I particularly liked the coverage of the top draft picks.
