CAROLINA HOGS (24-15 8th in Power Rankings)

Well it looks like the Hogs magic is running out. They have dropped 7 out of their last eight and both the offense and the pitching seem to have run a ground. They have plummeted to 13th in ERA and 18th in runs scored. Stiles, Rivas and Loose have all fallen off in the last week and Freeman Evers has gotten absolutely rocked in his last three starts. Says manager Melvin Young, “We don’t know what is wrong with Freeman right now, we don’t think its an issue of mechanics, he’s a good pitcher and if I keep running him out there he’ll get things straightened out.” The team hasn’t walked as much as management would like, in fact they are 31st in the league in the category, not particularly good for a team that was supposed to be built around the walk. For all of these negatives they are still clinging to first place by half a game and manager Melvin Young has them playing 3 games over their expected Pythagorean record. Despite their troubles this week, they are still playing quite well.

HOGS NOTES:
David Straley did not clear wavers and went to the New York Emperors, the worst team in baseball. In his place the Hogs surprised everybody by calling up 25 year old Kendall Hagy over pitchers Bill Cariello, Gregory Davis and Paul Abell. “Well Paul was hurt, otherwise he might have gotten the call,” said GM Tom Anstrom Greg is a good pitcher and Bill has great stuff but we just felt that Kendall was a great fit. His record is outstanding in AAA and even though our scouting director isn’t wild about his skills his first outing with a 2 strikeout scoreless inning shows that he has the stuff to make it in this league.”

-The Charlotte Observer-Earl Gutman 5/19/1988-
Well the good times may be runnin’ out for our Hogs. A loss yesterday dropped them below the Cincinnati Crusaders. They are mired in a deep funk where everything seems to be going wrong. If there is a way to lose a game it seems like they will these days. Rough breaks are a part of the game but if the Hogs cant get wins when someone other than Allen Kerley is pitching they are done. The good news is that the pitching should get a boost when Davor Resendiz returns in a week. Ron Elamin has tanked and Eddie Stiles isn’t the impact player he was earlier in the season, without Lee Paulin the team would have no punch at all right now. Hopefully things will turn around, but don’t count on it sports fans it looks like this team might be returning to earth. But considering they are an expansion team of misfits and castoffs, it was fun while it lasted.

CAROLINA HOGS (26-20 12th in Power Rankings)
It was another rough week for the Hogs as they put together a 2-5 record. Not even Allen Kerley could stop the bleeding. Despite the rough patches there were some encouraging signs as Andre Lopez pitched 7 shut-out innings in a win over Buffalo continuing his streaky ways. Also Lee Paulin has established himself as legitimate #3 hitter leading the club in all three triple crown categories. Eddie Stites has broken out of his long slump and is still one of the best leadoff hitters and Antonio Rivas is having a very nice campaign as well. The major problem offensively right now is that the outfield is just a mess. Brad Loose has gone into a tailspin and now has a .253 average and an embarrassing on base percentage. Both Lamas and Weir are struggling in center and Ron Elamin is hitting a meager .204 and still has a higher OPS than the other outfielders. In fact the only one even playing well is Jeffery Pennington who was the last man added to the roster and is hitting .300 having just moved into the everyday lineup. The team cannot figure out what is wrong with Todd Anderson. “We thought he was going to be our best pinch hitter and a key contributor, but he’s just struggled all year,” said GM Anstrom of the second baseman who is hitting just .128, “maybe he needs to play everyday but we cant afford to play him over either Stites or Paulin, we may have just misjudged his talent.”

CAROLINA HOGS (28-24 15th in Power Rankings)

Well the offense came back some for the Hogs this week but it didn’t help any as the team limped to a 2-4 record when the pitching didn’t produce. The minor offensive resurgence was led by Lee Paulin, Ron Elamin and Domingo Lamas all of whom had big weeks. Manager Melvin Young says that the center field job is now Lamas’ to loose and the outfield finally seems settled with Lamas, Elamin and Jeffery Pennington who continues to provide an empty batting average. Perhaps the worst news is that the Hogs seem to be falling fast in the standings, they are now behind both Cincinnati and Indianapolis and in the hotly contested Central they are only two and a half games out of 8th place. That means two more bad weeks and the Hogs could be looking up from the bottom. The team is looking forward to the return of Davor Resendiz in two days and a slightly easier schedule in the months ahead with 6 games against the Atlanta Generals (8th in the Central), 3 against the Detroit Demons (9th in the Central) and 3 against the New York Emperors (8th in the Atlantic). If Hogs fans need any reassurance in these rough times they just need to look to their fellow expansion franchise in the Atlantic. St. Pete is 15-37 and has the worst record in baseball.

The Cbl Digest

There is no other way to say it, the Hogs had a bad month. They were 10-19 in the month of May and almost all of their players let them down. The biggest culprits were Freeman Evers and Austin Koon on the pitching staff who had eras of 6.40 and 6.14 respectively. The bullpen pitched well but couldn't seem to hold leads going 2-4 on the month. Offensively Lee Paulin was just about the only contributor and Brad Loose and Norris Howard both had amazing falloffs. Loose went from .291 in April to .181 in May and Howard dropped from a .328 April to a .211 May.

Thomas Vanderford

Thomas Vanderford has been asked to write a diary for CBL Digest about his experiences in the minor leagues this year. A Princeton grad who finished up summa cum laude with a degree in Journalism, Vanderford was also the leadoff hitter and centerfielder for the Tigers. He was selected in the 5th round by the Carolina Hogs in this years draft and assigned to their A ball team the Charlottesville Gentlemen.

Well this has certainly been a better month for us here in Charlottesville. We are now 24-30, which is almost respectable and that’s a big step in the right direction. I know that I have been heading in the right direction I’ve got my batting average up to .250 now and and an obp of .342. I am still not hitting for much power and I strikeout way too much, which has been really frustrating but I know I’m on the right track now. I know why they call Albert Roy a legend. Actually all of us outfielders are hitting. Fred Bucholz is just about the best player in the league, he’s got 13 homers and a .444 obp, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is his last month with us. I cant believe how good he is, and to think, he’s only just out of High School. It’s amazing. James Body, our rightfielder, is playing great too. He is up to .272 and has 5 homers and 9 steals. Our coaches say he’s just below average as an outfielder but I know I like playing next to him. George Gonzalez, our only hitter who had enough experience for the expansion draft is playing a real good second base. George is a tough guy and a hard to get to know but once you do it’s hard not to like him. The pitching seems to be getting a lot better too. Hector Guzman, one of my roommates had a first month as tough as mine but he’s now leading the team in wins. Maximo Fortunato has been bounced back and forth between the pen and the rotation and has done a great job. I think we are all pretty good ballplayers and I know we will be able to help out the big club soon. We did have two strange things happen to our pitchers this month though. First we got a new Ace when the team sent Alfonzo Zaragosa down from Greenville. He was signed as a project by the big club and doesn’t want to be here. I can understand that, I mean he already won 15 games at A ball…8 years ago. But he was having control problems and the team is hoping he can get back on track. The Fonz, as we all call him, was a 12th round pick so for him to have made it so far only to wind up back down here must be pretty damn frustrating. I’m glad I’m not in his shoes. On the other hand he’s getting paid 500,000 to play baseball, so he cant really complain. He’s been a great boost to our pitching staff and someone worth having around, I know he’s helped Hector a lot. There was bad news for our pitching staff to though. We lost Bill King for the year. Billy was one of the few guys who had experience and for us to lose him is really tough. I guess bone chips in your shoulder is about as serious as an injury can be for a pitcher though. I really hope he comes back strong, he helped me when I was feeling down early on and after having a good year as an 8th rounder last year I know he helped some of the other guys out. If he is okay, and I sure hope he is, he will be a tough pitcher to beat some day.

LEE “The Punisher” PAULIN-Realized Potential

When the San Francisco Redwoods took Lee Paulin in the first round in 1979 they saw a legitimate #3 hitter who could play first and third and put up numbers worthy of an all-star at either position. A decade later, he is, it just took a little longer than expected. When the 6’4 205lb slugger showed up in Texas to play for the ‘Woods A ball team he was a feared presence in the league. He terrorized the circuit that year hitting .293 with 35 two baggers, 25 bombs and good plate disipline. The Redwoods left him in A ball. He played three years in A ball and each year his OPS dropped. The San Francisco scouting department was split on Lee, some felt he just got bored with the league, others felt he just wasn’t that good. When he posted a measly .709 OPS in his first year in AA the decision had been made. Paulin’s time in San Fran had run out. He did get a shot with the big club and in just two at bats garnered his first hit, a home run off Robert DiCarlo. In 1983 he tore up AA but it just didn’t matter the team had decided to move on and, a week after opening day he was given his release. The Orange County Condors wasted no time in signing the powerful first baseman and he destroyed AA pitching yet again. By 1985 he was, finally in AAA and it looked like he was finally going to make a name for himself. He didn’t. The next three years were the toughest he had faced yet. In 1985 the Condors called Paulin up to the show, when he got sent down after struggling he was snagged by the New York Emperors. For 1985, 86 and 87 Paulin was shuttled back and forth between Hartford and New York. Without fail he struggled badly in New York and crushed pitchers in Hartford. He was officially a “4A” player. So many players like that have come and gone in the leagues history but Paulin got lucky. He got expansion. When the Carolina Hogs took Paulin with the 9th pick in the expansion draft they weren’t even sure they wanted him. They had signed David Straley as a free agent and Todd Anderson, the 5th pick was expected to move over to first. But the Hogs liked Paulin’s raw power, not to mention his monster minor league numbers and decided to take a risk. The team tried, and failed to move Anderson to left and Paulin would share the first base job. In the early going none of three first basemen were hitting. But Paulin got hot. And he’s stayed that way. Said Manager Melvin Young, “I feel bad, I might have cost us some games early on, Lee is just a pure natural hitter. He is truly amazing.” Even GM Tom Anstrom concedes, “We got lucky with Lee, if you told me he would be hitting .331 and leading the club in virtually every category, there is no way I would have believed you. But Lee just keeps hitting. We are all in awe of him.” Paulin said, “I am just so glad I found an organization that finally believes in me, early in the year when I was struggling, Mel came up and told me it was my job to lose. And I am not going to lose this job, I’ve lost too many jobs in my time and this one is mine.”

CBL Weekly 6/5/88-
CAROLINA HOGS (28-30 29th in Power Rankings)
This was easily the most frustrating week in the Hogs season. Not only did Carolina drop all six contests this week but they did it in the most interesting of ways. The last three games they lost while being swept by Detroit were all heartbreakers. In the first game of the series the Hogs trailed 4-1 going into the ninth inning. A pinch hit 2 run homer by Antonio Rivas who was sitting as punishment for his defensive struggles the day before made the game 4-3. Lee Paulin knocked Eddie Stites in on a sac fly to tie the game at 4. The team had used Preiss to get out of an earlier jam and turned the ball over to lefty specialist Lawrence McKinnon. McKinnon quickly got the first two batters of the inning when Eldon Mayfield the star of the Demons offense and defending home run champ stunned every one in the stadium when he beat out a bunt single. The next batter, Cordell Cardaza smacked a two run homer into the seats to win the game for Detroit 6-4. Carolina was demoralized but went out the next day hoping to steal one back. Freeman Evers, seemed to overcome his recent problems in the early going throwing 5 shutout innings. He allowed one run in the sixth but the Hogs were confident they could get it back. Then Freeman exploded giving up another 3 runs before recording the second out of the seventh inning. The Hogs wound up losing 4-0. The final game of the series found the Hogs trying to make it back to .500 and avoid the sweep. They looked like they just might do that when Davor Resendiz made Jeffery Pennington’s solo homer stand up by throwing 7 scoreless innings. Then Arthur Ruddy came in and continued to pitch brilliantly. The Hogs were one out away from a win but Ruddy couldn’t close it out. The Demons tied the game at one where the two teams stood until the 14th inning. Lawrence McKinnon had gone 4.1 innings but Melvin Short left him in too long and, in the 14th innings he burned out and put a man in scoring position. Christian Miller came in but couldn’t keep him from scoring. The Hogs went down to another crushing defeat. This marked the week that the pitching started to show up again, Evers gave the team a solid outing, Resendiz was lights out. The rest of the staff was pretty bad however and the bullpen was just over worked by the end of the week. Most disappointing was that the offense totally disappeared. Pennington was the only player who hit and both Lee Paulin and Lamas who had both been hot have cooled considerably. With shaky pitching a bad offense and a leaky defense it is no wonder that the team struggled as badly as they did this week. Hopefully next week they can begin to turn at least one of those around.

Boy when things go wrong. They sure are going wrong for the Hogs right now. Even when our boys managed to stop a six game skid behind Allen Kerley they come out losers in the end. Antonio Rivas is now done for 5-6 weeks. That’s right, 5-6 weeks of Barry Antonucci at short. He’s already lost a starting spot once this year, he proved he aint that good. I just hope this isn’t the start of a long rest of the season cause it sure does look it from here.

Well Hogs fans I’m mighty sorry about yesterday’s column, I guess I should have knocked on wood or somethin’. This has to be the most depressin winning streak I’ve ever seen. The Hogs won the game yesterday but lost lefty George Fulkerson, one of the two reliable pitchers in the rotation for six weeks. Maybe the winning will keep up at least but without Fulk or Rivas I don’t see how.

HOGS NOTES:
The two injuries in two days have led to call ups from Greenville. John Baillargeon was the first to go north. Picked up off waivers from St. Pete he was hitting .302 with 12 homers and 41 walks between Orlando and Greenville. John made is season debut going 1-4 yesterday and is expected to share time with Anotucci and Ullman. The next day the team called up Paul Abell, a righthanded starter. Paul, selected with the 45th pick in the expansion draft had been doing a bangup job for Greenville going 6-5 with a 2.59 era. He was not quite as lucky last year going 2-11 with a 5.82 era for LA. Abell is expected to be a long reliever with Austin Koon moving back to the rotation.

CAROLINA HOGS (32-32 19th in Power Rankings)
The week proved to be a mixed blessing for Carolina while the Hogs did show signs of life and went 4-2 on the week to move them back to .500 it came at tremendous cost. The team lost shortstop Antonio Rivas and #2 starter George Fulkerson to injuries. Both will be lost for at least 5 weeks, probably more. In their place the team called up John Baillargeon who preformed poorly at the plate but well in the field and Paul Abell who closed out the week with six innings of beautiful mop up work in a lost cause. In fact Abell was so good that there were murmurs that he would take either Freeman Evers or Andre Lopez’s turn next week. As for how the team got to 4-2 it rested in the hands of three players primarily, Allen Kerley won his 2 starts and posted an 0.68 era, Norris Howard hit .500 with 10rbi, and Lee Paulin bounced back from a disasterous series against Detroit to hit .417. Add lights out relief pitching and great outings from Resendiz and Fulkerson and its easy to see why it was such a good week for the Hogs. Perhaps the best news was that they showed this week that they are not just going to swoon for the rest of the season. That fighter’s spirit that Melvin Young detected in the first week is still there and it isn’t going anywhere for a while.

CAROLINA HOGS (35-35 17th in Power Rankings)
The Hogs lost their last two games this week to move to 3-3 on the week and keep them at .500. Despite that disappointment, there were tons of positive signs. Paul Abell made his first start and pitched 8 great innings and picking up a win. Preiss went 1-0 with a save in 5 scorless innings out of the pen. The team got nothing from Davor Resendiz, Andre Lopez and Freeman Evers. Norris Howard stayed red hot hitting .400 for the week and his platoon partner, Dustin Boone hit the same thing. Just about everyone else on the offense struggled. The big move of the week was an end of the week trade with the Minnesota Mammoths for left-handed reliever Antonio LaRosa. LaRosa, a towering Cuban, is expected to strengthen the Hogs already strong pen. In order to obtain LaRosa the Hogs swapped 31 year old lefthander starter Gregory Davis, a mid-season free agent signing who was 4-4 with a 3.24 era at AAA. In order to make room for LaRosa the Hogs demoted Andre Lopez who has lost 3 decisions in a row and has been pounded in his last four starts leading to a 12.00 era in 3 starts in June. In his last start Lopez made it just 2/3 of an inning surrendering 6 hits and 5 earned runs. Lopez had started off the year as a dominant starter going 5-2 out of the gate and winning player of the week for May 2nd. Things haven’t gone his way since then however. GM Tom Anstrom broke down the trade and the Lopez demotion. “Antonio and McKinnon will give us a left handed combo every bit as devastating as Arthur Ruddy and Jamie Preiss have been from the right side. I really believe that when you add in our long men, Christian Miller and Danny Salazar we have one of the most talented bullpen’s in the game. Losing Gregory was tough, its always hard to give up a left handed starter, especially with the state of our staring rotation but we feel that we have a good staff now and when Fulkerson and Hagy come back it could be a great staff. As for Andre, I mean, he did some great work for us earlier this year but he just hasn’t had anything recently. The trip to Greenville should be good for him. He can work with Chris Boyter, who is truly legendary in his ability to work with young pitchers, and hopefully get straightened back out. He’s still only 27, so he could be back soon.”

Another .500 week for the Hogs, who relied on their pitching to get them whatever success they had. Only Davor struggled in his start this week. Allen Kerley was a masterful 1-1 with a 2.30 era. Paul Abell was lights out, Koon made his return to the rotation with a good outing and even Freeman Evers had a strong outing (although it couldn’t stop his 8 game losing streak. Jamie Priess was really the only reliver who was called on much and he was mind blowing. Arthur Ruddy only pitched 1 and 1/3 innings but he picked up two saves. The offense was not nearly as impressive. Actually just about everybody tailed off. Norris Howard kept hitting and Eddie Stites picked it up again hitting 2 doubles, 3 triples and was 3 of 4 on steals.

The CBL Digest

It was a mixed month for the Hogs. They bounced back from a late May early June swoon to finish the month with a record of 14-12. The cost was enormus however as the team lost four key contributors to injury. The Hogs lost shortstop Antonio Rivas whoose .382 obp and 5.28 plays per 9 at short were critical to the teams success both offensively and defensively, lefthander George Fulkerson, who was second on the staff in victories with 5 and was the #2 starter for most of the season, Kendall Hagy who gave the Hogs a few quality innings of long relief, and most recently Paul Abell who had gone 2-1 with a 3.26era as Fulk's replacement on the staff. Despite all of these injuries the pitching staff has been very strong. Abell was a pleasant surprise until his injury, Allen Kerley won 3 games and posted a 1.93 era, thre rest of the starters were solid and the bullpen was sensational. It was the offense that struggled. Norris Howard was really the only Hog to hit posting a .386 avg with 17rbi on the month. Paulin slumpted to .255, Stites to .227, Ullman to .220 and Elamin to .089. The outfield was in a constant state of flux and the pinch hitting which had gone to Marcos Pardo and Todd Anderson was just not coming through at all. If the offense picks it up however the Hogs could still find themselves in thick of things.

Well I wish I knew what was wrong with my swing. I've fallen back down to .232 this month and I have 86 strikeouts in 300 at bats. I'm not even doing a good job of stealing bases, I'm just 12 for 20. I've never struggled playing baseball before and this has been really tough. Actually, I've never really strugged with anything before, except for Advanced Calculus, but that's why I was a journalism major. This is different. I guess I shouldnt complain though the team is 40-39 so at least we are winning. I do think we are all getting tired, none of us has never had a season this long before. Fred Bucholz is still hitting, he has 16 homers 73 walks and 14 steals. I know he thinks that he is ready but Albert Roy doesnt and neither does the scouting director Chase VanHeusen. So I guess Fred is sticking around. Actually it looks like most of us will be. The pitching staff has gotten better, Garfield has 9 saves and a 3.75era, Fortunado has done a nice job as a swing man and Hector Guzman and Ramon Mendez have pitched great so far. The problem is that aside from Freddy none of us are hitting. The organization made one move this month, they signed a speedy outfielder named Rob Lowe who had been realeased with Detroit. I hope this isnt any comment on how I have been playing recently.

Jamie Preiss: Worth Every Penny

When the Hogs announced the signing of ace reliever Jamie Preiss for 4.25 per year for 4 years the reaction around the baseball world was unianimous. The CBL Anaylst, an sabermetric organization, wrote in their newsletter, "Here we thought some organization would be applying some logic to the way that they ran their baseball operations and then the Carolina Hogs go do this. It was understandable when they overpayed to get Eddie Stites and Antonio Rivas but the Preiss signing was inexcusable. This was just another example of a team trying to hard to make a big splash. The biggest waste of money a bad team can make is on an elite closer, and Priess has barely been that for Buffalo posting a 3.82 and losing 8 games last year. The move doesnt make sense and we have lost a lot of confidence in the Carolina organization."

Oops.

Priess has proven all of his doubters wrong thus far. He has been far more than anyone, including Carolina could have imagined. His numbers are so unreal that they dont quite make sense. 1st amoung relivers in era, 1st amoung relivers in opponents batting average, a 93% save success rate, only 13.6% Inherited Runners scored when Jamie entered the game. He has just 13 saves, but 4 holds and 3 wins. He's pitched 50 innings already. Some of his individual game lines are even better. Take his last win where he pitched 3.2 hit less innings striking out 8, including the first seven batters he faced. Priess has been used in an unconventional way by manager Melvin Young and he has responded in fine form. Other pitchers might balk at the fact that his setup men, Arthur Ruddy and Lawrence McKinnon have 7 saves between them, but not Jamie. Maybe its because he's already hit paydirt but he doesnt seem concerned with numbers. Just winning. "Look, saves are overrated," said Jamie in a recent interview, "I just want to get the job done and help my team win. I dont want them to save me for the times when we have a three run lead in the ninth. I want them to feel like they can use me when the game is on the line. Otherwise I'm not the best pitcher on the staff, and thats what I care about. That and winning." While Jamie has been lights out all year, this past month he was simply untouchable. He went 2-0 with 4 saves, an 0.42 era and 29k's in 21.2 innings.

CAROLINA HOGS (41-41 19th in Power Rankings)
Another 3-3 week for the Hogs who stayed at .500 on the season and are now in 5th place in the Central Conference 9 games behind league leading Cincinnati. The starting pitching was solid as Freeman Evers, Austin Koon and Davor Resendiz all turned in one good start (Davor also got hammered in his second start.) The bullpen did a good job except for Danny Salazar and Christian Miller who both got clobbered. On offense Norris Howard stayed red hot and Lee Paulin put together a nice week. The most pleasant surprises however were Barry Antonucci who hit .368 for the week and Todd Anderson who broke out of his season long slump hitting .500 with a homer and 7 rbi. Anderson’s hot streak resulted in a lineup change as Lee Paulin moved across the infield to third base while Donald Ullman was benched. Anderson took over at first. The Hogs are now mid way through their first season, here is a midseason look at the roster.

CATCHERS:

Norris Howard: Along with providing the leadership that Carolina wanted from him Howard has surprised just about everyone by being one of teams best bats. On pace for 8 homers and 72 rbi while hitting .323 with 26 doubles.

Dustin Boone: The starting catcher against lefties Boone was done a solid but unspectaular job thus far. He has hit just .238 and is on pace for 18 doubles, 8 homers and 22 rbi in 126 abs. Boone is also hitting .273 with a .365 obp against lefthanded pitching, in short he has been a valuable platoon player.

Marcos Pardo: The big backup catcher had a brief stint as an everyday player and has, for the most part, been unimpressive. He is on pace for 4 homers, 28 rbi, 6 doubles and a .231 avg in 242 abs. Pardo has been a solid force in the clutch however hitting .318 in close and late situation. He will probably be the top pinch hitter in the second half if the lineup stays as is.

INFIELDERS

Lee Paulin: Splitting time between First and Third "The Punisher" has been Carolina's most consistent threat hitting .305 and on pace for 18 homers and 94 rbi, a nice season.

Todd Anderson: Anderson has played second and first and has been the teams #1 pinch hitter for most of the season. His struggles have been well documented and he only now seems to be breaking out of them. His projected line at the moment looks like 4 homers and 20 rbi with .193 average in 166 abs. If he keeps hitting like he has in recent weeks however that will be a thing of the past.

Eddie Stites: Electric Eddie's projected line of .257, 14 homers, 76 rbi, 36 doubles, 16 triples and 96 runs scored and 84 steals looks very impressive but, to be honest, there is cause for concern. Eddie's average has tumbled from .320 in April to .248 in May to .227 in June and he has started July 1 for 12. Additionally his 25 walks to 69 strikeouts are hardly ideal for a leadoff man.

Barry Antonucci: After losing a starting job at the very begining of the season Antonucci has made the most of Antonio Rivas' injury and has played very well at short in his absence. He is on pace for a .256 avg with 2 homers and 22 rbi in 266 abs, not great, but it could certainly have been worse.

John Balliergon: Has struggled since his promotion going 4 for 24. The team doesnt know what to do with John since he is waiver elligible but his probably the most likely hitter to be sent down when Rivas and the other injured players return.

Antonio Rivas: Before his injury on June 7th, Rivas had filled the #2 spot perfectly. He is on pace for 6 homers, 38 rbi, 22 doubles, 8 triples, a .291 average and a .382 obp In 466 at bats. If he comes back healthy he will give Carolina's offense a big shot in the arm.

Donald Ullman: The starting third baseman for much of the year, a recent slumo and chronic troubles in rbi situation have pushed the rookie Ullman to the bench. His current projections are a .248 average, 12 homers, 50 rbi, 32 doubles and a .296 obp in 526 abs. Now that he has essentially moved into a platoon role, it would be surprising to see him put up those numbers.

OUTFIELDERS:

Ron Elamin: Smooth in right, and capable at second, Elamin's stuggles have been at the plate. He is one of Carolina's best power threats with a projected 10 homers, 22 doubles and 4 triples in just 324 abs, He also is patient, on pace to draw 38 free passes. The problem is his batting average, Elamin is hitting just .185, which makes him almost unplayable.

Domingo Lamas: Like all of Carolina's outfielders Domingo has bounced in and out of the starting lineup, one of only two Hogs trusted to man centerfield, Lamas, is on pace for 18 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homers, 32 rbi, 20 steals, 18 caught stealing and a .231 average in about 300 abs.

Thad Weir: The Hogs other centerfielder, Thad has had some real problems, hitting just .219 (but with a higher obp than Lamas). He is on pace for 16 doubles, 8 triples, 2 homers and 38 rbi in just over 400 abs.

Brad Loose: Another guy who has been out of the lineup, the problems of the rest of the offense have made Brad a safe option everday. He is hitting .262 with a .304 obp and is on pace for 22 doubles, 2 triples, 6 homers and 42 rbi with just 34 strikeouts in 404 abs.

Jeffery Pennington: The brightest surprise on the Hogs offense, Pennington, who was supposed to be the 25th man on the roster has moved into the lineup and is on pace for 14 doubles, 4 triples, 6 homers 48 rbi with a .277 average in 412 abs.

PITCHERS
Paul Abell: Called up when Fulkerson went down with an injury, Abell impressed going 2-1 with a 3.26 era. He promptly got hurt but a spot in the rotation will be waiting for him when he gets back.

Freeman Evers: Thanks to a mix of bad luck and bad pitching Freeman is 3-9 riding an 8 game losing streak in the second half. That puts Evers on pace to go 6-18 with a 4.85 era, 32 homers allowed, 110 ks to 66 walks in just over 200 innings. That is, assuming, he doesnt get bumped to the bullpen.

George Fulkerson: The lefthanded Fulkerson had established himself as the #2 starter going 5-5 with a 3.78 era before being injured on June 6th. The spot will be ready for him when he gets back.

Allen Kerley: The Hogs Ace hands down. Kerley, a converted reliever has been a very pleasant surprise for Carolina. He is on pace to go 16-8 with a 2.45 era, 164 ks to 96 walks an incredible 2 homers allowed in 228 innings.

Andre Lopez: sent back to Greenville but he logged 69.2 innings with Carolina and even walked away with player of the week honors once. He finished at 5-5 with a 6.46 era and his inconsistency drove Carolina management crazy. Given the number of guys who have actually pitched well for the Hogs Lopez will try to refine his mechanics at AAA and then see what he can do in September.

Davor Resendiz: The number one pick in the expansion draft there is no way to say it other than that Davor has been a big dissapointment. An early season injury threw the Hogs staff into dissary and his pitching has been very up and down, with more downs than ups. Currently 2-4 with a 5.53 era,35 ks, 13bbs, a .321 OBA and 7 homers allowed already. Given that he is one of the only Hogs who has had success in the past the team will be patient with the lefty but there are already rumblings about a move to the pen once Fulkerson and Abell return.

Kendall Hagy: A lefthanded swingman Hagy went 1-0 with a 4.35era in 10.1 innings before pulling a bicep muscle. His return is immenent.

Austin Koon: Another swingman, Austin has gone 4-4 with a 4.35 era. In the rotation now, and pitching well. If he keeps up his performance in the second half he would be on pace to 8-8 with a 4.35 era, 28 games, 20 starts, 70ks, 22bb in 140IP. Koon will probably return to the bullpen, unless he is much better than Davor in the next few weeks.

Antonio LaRosa: A lefthanded reliever aqquired from Minnesota, La Rosa has had a nice year and is on pace to go 4-2 with a 3.38 era in close to 60 innings.

Lawrence McKinnon: The teams top lefthanded setup artist, McKinnon is on pace to go 4-6 with 4 saves and a 2.77 in 52 innings. He is on pace to walk just 8 with a .211 oba and a 0.92 WHIP.

Chirstian Miller: The teams top long man, Miller is one pace to go 6-6 with a 3.12 era, pitch in 60 games, make 2 starts, throw 104 innings, and allow just 6 walks.

Arthur Ruddy: Probably the best set-up man in the game Ruddy has been lights out and shows the makings of a great closer. He is on pace to go 2-0 with 10saves and a 2.32 era over 60 innings of work. Most impressively he is holding opponents to a .176 oba and has a 0.77 WHIP.

Danny Salazar: The old man of the Hogs staff Salazar is putting together a decent season in what is almost certainly his final campaign. He is on pace to pitch in 34 games, make 2 starts, go 4-0 with 2 saves and a 3.82 era over 66 innings.

Alvaro Tedesco: A 23yr old long reliver, Alvaro was called up after all the injuries. He has a bright future but probably wont see much more work than the 1 and 1/3 he has pitched so far, at least until September.

Jamie Priess: The best reliever in baseball this year. Preiss has defined lights out. On pace to go 6-6 with 26 saves, an 0.69 era in 104 innings pitched. He is also on pace to strikeout 134, walk 30, and hold the opposition to a .145 oba and an 0.77 WHIP.
