Pictures
Jofre,
Thanks for all the pictures. I was a sparing partner for Eddie "Redtop" Owens, which brought back great memories. The following is a wish list of New England boxers who I'd love to have pictures of. Gerry and Andre Tessier, Sammy Walker, Eddie Demars, Barry Allison, Jeff Dyer, Bobby Courchesne and Matt Mullane. Thanks, Austin |

Jofre
Jofre, Thanks for the pictures of Andre Tessier, Bobby Courchesne and Barry Allison. They were my boyhood heroes, boxing out of the Holyoke Valley Arena with its cozy 2,000 seating capacity. All three boxed many times in New York, which put them higher up on the club fighter circuit as a result of the better competition. If I might, I’d like to add to my wish list of New England boxers. Danny Heath, Al Romano, Paul Raymond, Jimmy McDermott, Eddie Spence, Pete Riccitelli, Dave Ramalho, Ted Doncaster, Paul Cardoza and Bobby Benoit. Thanks, Austin |

Manuel Abrew. Born Edinburgh, Scotland. career:1933-1947 Final record 51-22-3. Did well against all but the best of the British/Empire heavies: Farr, Foord, etc. Liked to work the body, and was DQ'd two or three times for straying too far south. Trained by Jimmy Reynolds.

Jose Manuel Urtain. Spain. "El Tigre de Cestona". 5'11" 195 lbs. 1968-1977. Final record 56-11-4. Fared well against third string heavies. Best win over Jurgen Blin for EBU title. Many early round KOs of fighters of the calibre of Richard Dunn.

Just for fun. Here's a shot from the first Cleroux-Chuvalo fight which sold out the old Forum. Everyone here knows what a tough SOB George was, but you may not know that he was the leading contender during much of the reign of England's Henry Cooper. George tells a story of meeting Cooper's then manager, can't recall the mug's name. Chuvalo pressed this guy for a fight with Cooper for the title, and this fella says, "Fight you, George? Henry doesn't even want to meet you socially!"
Chuvalo is a classic example of a Canadian fighter who likely would have done much better had he been able to learn and train under the top guys.
