Winslow's Agent Rejects Browns' Offer

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1849378

Winslow's agent rejected a contract offer -- potentially worth at least $40 million -- from the Cleveland Browns on Friday that would make him the highest-paid tight end in NFL history.

Can someone tell me why somebody who has never taken an NFL snap, let alone caught a pass, deserves to even be offered a contract to make him the highest paid player at his position? This, to me, is the worst thing about sports (football and basketball in particular). When those that get drafted get big ass guaranteed contracts without having to prove they can play the pro game.

Gibson swings, and a fly ball to deep right field! This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable! A home run for Gibson! And the Dodgers have won the game, 5 to 4; I don't believe what I just saw! I don't believe what I just saw!

Dude! He's a warrior out on the field. He deserves all the money he gets.

Oh I forgot he's a solider out there too.

Same thing with those "amateurs" in baseball's draft, 'cept it's just their obscene signing bonuses.

Just a tiny little quibble here. NFL contracts are not guaranteed, which essentially makes everything other than the signing bonus fairly meaningless. I certainly agree it's pretty idiotic of him not to take it, though. If I were Winslow, I'd simply say, "Give me just a little bit more than Shockey's getting, and I'll be happy."

I thought NFL contracts WERE guaranteed, that's why some guys can refuse to play and still get paid. I knew in basketball they weren't guaranteed, but I always thought NFL ones were

Nope, not guaranteed. That's why you'll see so many veterans get cut. Since most contracts are structured to have escalating payments each year, by the last couple years of a contract lots of players are scheduled to get paid a lot more than they're worth, so they get cut (see Kerry Collins).

I've hated him ever since that "warrior" comment, because the guy thinks he's larger than life. I can't wait until some linebacker pops him in the jaw.

My bad.

The Redskins took a pass on Winslow because they knew his agent was likely to do this. The Browns knew he was going to be hard to sign, yet they went so far as trade an extra 2nd round pick to get him. I think that pretty well sums up the skills of the Browns' front office.

His agent is the same guy who has Julian Peterson turning down a 15M signing bonus and a contract that would make Ray Lewis the only higher paid linebacker in the league. I'm not sure I can figure out how this guy is doing what is in the best interest of his clients.
