Rumor: Mets get Benson and V. Zambrano
Apparently the Mets are set to screw up their farm system...pitching prospects Scott Kazmir and Matt Peterson, and catching prospect Justin Huber are all gone in the two separate deals. Wigginton as well.
It's not confirmed yet, but by the sounds of things, these are all but done. GH |

What a horrible set of trades that would be for the Mets. They really need to figure out what the hell they're doing over there. They keep talking about rebuilding, but they have the 58-year-old John Franco still hanging around, and now they're thinking of trading their top pitching prospect? Have they made any good moves in the last 3 years?

Mets make pitch to contend: acquire Benson, Zambrano
By ADAM RUBIN DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER ATLANTA — The Mets pulled the trigger on two trades this afternoon, obtaining Tampa Bay pitcher Victor Zambrano and Pittsburgh pitcher Kris Benson, the Daily News has learned. The cost was high. The Mets shipped top pitching prospect Scott Kazmir and Double-A pitcher Jose Diaz to Tampa Bay for Zambrano and Triple-A pitcher Bartolome Fortunato. They traded Ty Wigginton and pitching prospect Matt Peterson to Pittsburgh and catching prospect Justin Huber to Kansas City in a three-way deal. The Mets will also receive Jeff Keppinger. Zambrano or Benson is expected to start Saturday against the Braves at Turner Field. |

VICTOR ZAMBRANO???? The Mets wouldn't trade Kazmir for Soriano, but they'll trade him for Zambrano?? Not even Carlos?? I would say that is a bs rumor, but as a Mets fan, it wouldn't surprise me.

Victor Zambrano's only distinction is that he has the worst control of any pitcher in baseball (having led the AL in walks, wild pitches, and hit batsmen last season, and in contention for all three this season as well). Benson's not much better. I think the Mets have simulataneously managed to hurt their future and their present with these trades.

Well, they certainly haven't hurt their present. But as for the future, we'll have to see. I think Benson is OK if they sign him and he stays healthy, but I think Zambrano is a case of putting too much faith in Rick Peterson to harness Zambrano's talent.

Ha ha ha ha. What a tragedy.
If only the Yankees could be managed so poorly.

The Mets trade 3 young promising arms including the guy who has been the savior in waiting for them for a few years in Kazmir, and spare parts for 2 average pitchers both with a history of arm problems, yeah this has disaster written all over it. This is a case of not knowing how good your own team is, your not a good team and your not winning anything this year! And a case of being fooled by the fact that just because players are some of the best available doesn't make them any good! They gave away a big part of their future for guys who cannot help them win now.

Last I checked, being 6 games out at the end of July didn't mean you were toast for the year.

No it doesn't but if you look back I think there's about less than a dozen times a team has come from 6 out to win and only once has a team overcome 6 back and three teams to do it.
Fact is you have a far more talented team in Philly, a far more recent success team in Florida and the perennial in Atlanta. Let me put it this way. If the NY Mets win the NL East, I will vote for John Kerry in November.

Apparently you've been checking the wrong places. http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/schwa...n/1409446.html
And on top of the stats, the Mets are simply not a good team, too bad the mets are too stubborn to understand that because they just gave up some good prospects so that they can feel like they still have a chance to win |

Or perhaps because teams that are 3 back feel more of a need to make a move rather than teams that are only a game back.

The best part of this is Huber. Huber, the Mets best catching prospect, a guy John Sickels ranked as his 38th overall hitting prospect (and 5th best catching prospect, behinid Mauer, Mathis, Navarro, and Quiroz), and at least one of the top 10 prospects in the organization, for Jose Bautista (who was then shipped to Pittsburgh).
Jose Bautista's last year: October 2003: Look back at 2003 season. Frown on .242/4/20 season in 165 at bats. Wonder aloud why punched a wall and broke hand. Realize you turn 23 this month. Realize you're still in A ball. Sigh regretfully. December 2003: Get drafted in the Rule 5 Draft by Baltimore. Smile thinking that you'll be in the majors this year. Frown after realizing that you'll be the 25th guy on the roster until the Orioles can figure out a fake injury to put you on the DL for. May 2004: Get designated for assignment by Baltimore. June 2004: Get claimed off waivers by Tampa Bay. Another opportunity! (Later) June 2004: Get designated for assignment by Tampa Bay. (Still Later) June 2004: Get traded to Kansas City for money. Begin game worn jersey collection for eBay. July 2004: Get invited to Allan Baird's office. Enjoy champagne. Learn that the Mets just traded their best catching prospect for you. Shrug and drink more champagne. Laugh as Baird does the macarena, then says Jimmy Gobble's name 174 times in a row. (Minutes later) July 2004: Learn that the Mets traded you back to Pittsburgh in a deal for Kris Benson. Get depressed after learning that you won't receive a jersey to be game-worn for eBay with Mets logo.
