With all these wild rumors I really believe RJ will only waive his no trade clause to go to the Yanks. If the DB's are serious about competing next year then they are not going to be happy with the prospects that the Yanks have. I'd hope the Angels also wouldn't be stupid enough to mortgage their future for RJ but you never know if he indicates he'd be willing to go there. All that being said I bet dollars to donuts that he stays in Arizona to give a moribund franchise a reason to have fans come out.

I honestly don't see that the Yankees have the depth to do this. Who else would there be to got to Arizona - all they can offer is to take the contract, but plenty of teams are willing to do that and more.
Colangelo doesn't want to trade RJ enough to send him to NY for nothing. If RJ really wants to leave, and NY ain't an option, he'll expand his list. If he doesn't want to leave, he won't expand his list. |

BTW, they have a second baseman who's hitting close to .300 and plays solid defense in Miguel Cairo. What more could they want out of the ninth spot in the lineup?

Cairo's #'s against lefties are good (.360/.433), which is why he has solid overall rate stats. Against righties, .325/.425, with the 425 way out of career line. His numbers scream "small sample size," and if you believe MGL, he is a pretty below average 2b. If NY believe's they should not get a 2B, then I'm a happy Sox fan.
The idea of the Clemens going to NY is odd, too; why would he sign at a home town discount just to let himself be traded? Seems like NY Daily BS talk. I'm not too convinced that Mathis or Kotchman are stars, esp. Kotchman, but I like McPherson. It appears they will not resign Glaus, so trading a AAA star 3B is a bit short-sighted. RJ is worth 2-3 wins this year, maybe 4 if you are really lucky. If RJ means seeing less Aaron Sele, that is probably a good thing just for aesthetic purposes. 3 wins is just enough to make it really worthwhile, and the Angels really need a frontline starter (which could be said for any team). If AZ wanted just Mathis and Kochman, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

The angels will not trade McPherson or Mathis. They will trade Kotchman and a couple others maybe Aybar or Wood and a pitcher for Johnson. Nobody will trade 2 of their top 3 prospects for Johnson, especially since the DBacks aren't in a position to demand a big asking price cuz Johnson wants out now.

The DBacks have RJ under contract for another year. That he may want out is meaningless, he's under contract. If I'm the DBacks I ask for the sky to start and negotiate from there. You never start off trade talks asking for less then then you want, or even for what you want.

The fact that he's under contract for another year means nothing, they have to trade him. When a player of that stature demand a trade they get it, if they refuse to trade him he could very easily say the hell with you and retire after this season and then the DBacks are left out in the cold. They can ask for whatever they want for him but the fact is there is a limited market for him and the angels are willing to offer more than any of the other teams have to offer for him. As far as the specs what I hear is Mathis and McPherson are untouchable. However they are willing to deal Kotchman because they dont believe he has much power potential, so they will offer Kotchman and a few others for Unit.

I didn't know Randy Johnson demanded a trade.

Johnson has not demanded a trade, so I'm about 75% sure he's staying in Arizona. However, the D'Backs are reportedly interested in Yankees prospect Eric Duncan now, so if Steinbrenner and Cashman can throw together a miracle package around him... well, that's where the other 25% comes in.
The Yanks may try to move veterans for the prospects they need to get this deal done; I've heard rumors they're shopping Kenny Lofton and Ruben Sierra to see if they can get the kind of prospects Arizona would take. Brad Halsey's name has also been thrown around, either as part of the package to Arizona or to acquire a prospect Arizona wants. It's not a very likely deal at this point, but it's not an impossibility.
