Favorite Player by Decade 1931-1940

There were seemingly a lot of great players to choose from in this decade. I narrowed it down (as time allowed), hopefully it works.

If you don't like my top nine, write one in.

I'm surprised Chick Hafey made the cut. Bingo!

Guys, Lou Gehrig was in the previous decade. I'm using each star only once.

Mel Ott will be in the next decade.

I voted for Chick Hafey...what an amazing story, sinus problems so bad it affected his eyesite...plus he had night blindness, so when night games became the norm...he had to leave, but before then...he had to what? Have 5 different types of glasses cause his eyes would be different one day to the next.

What caused George Sisler, Homer Smoot and many other players downfall...Chick had it 2x as bad...and he put up HOF stats, plus was a leader on that Cardinal dynasty

I still can't believe how he did it...but he is one of those "borderline" guys that they got right...he needs a movie about his life...that would be a tearjerker and a great movie on perseverence

Ah ok. Not sure who I'd vote for then. In terms of value, Gehrig/Ott were 1/2 afaik in the 30's by a pretty wide margin.

Well, I've always liked Dizzy Dean. An injury cut his career a little shorter than it could have been. It was cool - we bought my grandfather's house, a house that has been in my family off and on for 50+ years. Anyway, I was cleaning out the attic and came across some newspapers from the 30s and 40s. Aside from some eerie articles about Germany's new leader Adolph Hitler (before the events that led to WWII), there were also some great articles in the sports section about Dizzy Dean returning from injury.

dola,

Who are you again????

I never heard that about his eyes. Thanks, for the info. It's pretty incredible that he could see a baseball, with his eye problems, let alone hit it.

Ok you are not only OFF The Board for that comment, but we need to beat you with it.

We could always use your Jeopardy scoreboard

LEFTY GROVE

The dude lead the league in ERA seven times during the decade, nine times overall!

And this was playing in Fenway, and the Baker Bowl, both HITTERS parks!

His CAREER ERA+? 148!!!

Record from 1930-1939? 199-76...hmmm...average 20-8 for the DECADE!

Show me a more dominant player this decade!

Maybe Ducky Medwick should get an honorable mention just for his Triple Crown, the last in the NL....
