I am running a historical solo dynasty. I was wondering if anyone put out a list of what they believe to be accurate range ratings, or a less perferred a list of players career Range number vs. League Avg. I unfortunately don't have the desire/time to look thru baseball reference at each individual player and figure it out. TIA

Boy, do I wish someone had this type of info.
Even Ankit's Career Database has to be edited to get somewhat accurate range ratings. The best I have been able to do is go to Baseball-Reference and looked up 2000 alltime greats and used the assists for infielders to get range and used putouts for outfielders...catchers and pitchers were difficult to figure...if I used assists for them...Deadballers show up much better because of more bunting during that era. To answer your question...I know of no place to get accurate ratings even if you do a lot of research...unless GForce and Spanky historical leagues are accurate as far as range. Even in Baseball Reference, the league average is very misleading, because it takes into effect fielding percentage, which has nothing to do with range. |

Actually I found a place where I can get the Information. The Lahman DB, you have to use the original since Ankit averages the players Defense over their careers in both versions of his DBs. Which I assume comes up with better numbers for OOTPB. But I still think that OOTPB just puts in a random number for range
![]() The Problem is however is turning the raw numbers into an effective list. I know next to nothing about access or any other DB. So I'm debating whether I should just run queries by hand to get league averages or figuring how to run a Macro to do it for me. I've only really written Macros in Excel tho. |

OOTPB seems to put quite a few ratings in randomly.
Range, Arm, pitcher's batting ratings. In my historic league I always edit every rating for each player and try to base them on facts...if I can find them. Many times I just "guessimate" them. In the fictional leagues generated by the game, it really gives some unrealistic ratings. Often I see second basemen with a .991 fielding percentage. The highest I've seen in real life is about .986 for Ryne Sandberg. Pitchers often have 1.000 for their percentage. Watch out. Whenever a stat is not kept by MLB, like steals or strikeouts by a batter...the database assigns a "10" rating...which gives pitchers a totally unrealistic strikeout rating when at bat. It also will give a better steal rating than it should. It is based on percentage of steals rather than quantity. Thus, 5 out 5 attempts is rated higher than 50 out of 60 attempts. |

If you follow my 1901 dynasty here at OOTP...I am stating the changes needed for an historical league...I have to PM Ankit so I can tell him some changes
What I do...is for ld guys who hung on a while...I take their Prime years...sinc their decline is what drops their career range factor. For 2 or 3 years guys I even it out so they are not terrible but not great either That way Tinker is actually a great defensive SS. and Pie Traynor is not the baseball God at 3b many believe Last edited by Carlton; 07-19-2004 at 12:41 AM. |
