I kept seeing Sean Casey being placed on waivers and then taken off by the Reds, before they finally allowed him to be claimed by the Indians after the third time of placing him on waivers. This move makes no sense for a few reasons...
1) They currently have no other full time 1B on their active roster. 2) Casey is a career .300 hitter and was batting .299 at the time they placed him on waivers, playing in the majority of the Red's games 3) It was before the trade deadline and they could have easily traded him for some good prospects to a team needing a veteran 1B... I have the AI Evaluation settings on 50-14-24-12 and do update them every month(per one of the other posts)...I did notice his ratings were kind of low, although he was still performing at a high level... Would it be more realistic to place a greater emphasis on stats(obviously in the beginning of the season, it would be on the prior seasons) than ratings for player evaluation? I have not seen very many of these types of poor waiver decisions, but this was a pretty obvious one.... Matter2003 |

I turn them off because they only make the game easier to win. I mean when was the last time you lost a good player to waivers? The answer is never but the CPU does all the time. Just makes the game easier so it is not a fun option but good for online leagues.

I disagree. Outside of the occasional relief pitcher, I have only been able to get role players. eg, a good defensive player with some speed etc.. |

Could it be a salary related move? Remember that Boston put Manny Ramirez on waivers with the hope of being freed from his hige salary. Perhaps the Reds in this case are trying to relieve some financial pressure from themselves.

No, the answer is simple, the game has been programmed to have Jim Bowden as the Reds GM, and he didn't know a damn thing about the waiver system.

I had a team claim its own player off waivers. This should be disabled, because it means the weakest team in the league can put players on the waiver wire and just claim them if it wants to keep them.

Ever since updating to 6.03, the waiver situation has seemed well-adjusted to me. I may see a rare 2 1/2 star player out there, but that's about it.
Also, to to speak to ctorg's assertation that it should be turned off because last place teams can place players on waivers virtually at will: this is how it works in real life, too. I seem to remember (despite all efforts) the 1970's and 1980's when the Cleveland Indians were the absolute worst team at several points in time, and they took advantage of this loophole in the waiver system ... for all the good it did them

You figure you'd have to have the worst record by a couple of games, though, to be sure.
Would serve a team right if they had planned to do this and then won the next two or three games while the second team lost and passed them for wost record!! |

Interestingly enough, teams have even drafted their own unprotected players in the rule 5 draft.

Famous waiver gaffe.
Pirates accidentally put Willie Greene and Moises Alou on waivers (in 1990) Greene goes to Cincy, Alou goes to Montreal. |
