Swerve is just having a bit of a tough time coming back from the shoulder injury that gutted his 1938 season. He had a poor April, but has been fine since then. He may not have another 1935 type of a season in him, but if he keeps up the pace of May and June, he should have a good year.

3,000 may be a struggle, but he should be up over 1800 by the end of the year, possibly in the 1825 range. If he can stay healthy and get back into his 175+ a year range, he'd actually go past it at the age of 37... so it's not impossible. The key probably is that health and banging away at a 175 type pace from here to 34 or 35.

Then again, the war is coming up. He'll be 33 in 1942... I think people in that age were heading off. If that happens, a shot at 3000 is toast. Still, the SS on four WS winning teams along with a BOY... it might get Swerve in the Hall even if he ends up in the low 2000 H range because of the war. He's been a heck of a SS for a great team.

Speaking of the war coming up, my grandfather, Wolter Tjeenk-Willink never really lived in the States. He lived in the Netherlands, which was obviously not a fun place to be at the time. He was a well-to-do publisher, and as such he had a rather large house. The house was taken over by the Germans and used as a local command center. I don't really know very many details, but he spent most of the war as part of the Dutch underground resistance movement. I do know that at one point he was captured but that he escaped. I have no idea how long they had him. He did make it through the war, though, and lived till the mid 1990's.

Matt said earlier that as far as players being drafted, he'd ask for volunteers among the ancestors. In my heart, I'd really like Boeken to stay and play. He's got a shot at 3000 hits (if he stops getting hurt!), but he'll need another 10 productive seasons after this one to get there. That's also likely his only ticket to the Hall of Fame, as he probably doesn't have the power or other skills to earn a shot without an extended career. Nonetheless, I know that he'd go, so I'd like to volunteer him as one of the first to head over to Europe for the war.

fhomess - sounds like Grandpa Wolter could be the Hank Greenberg of TWB:

"Amid the rising anti-Semitism of the 1930s, Hank Greenberg's baseball heroics took on symbolic meaning for many Jewish Americans. He was the first baseball star to enter the military in World War II, doing so voluntarily."

"Greenberg was discharged from the service on Dec. 5, two days before the Pearl Harbor attack. He immediately re-enlisted and served in the Far East."

"Detroit slugger Hank Greenberg, a celebrated star of the time and future Hall of Famer, received his draft call on May 7, 1941. Hammerin' Hank had played in three World Series and two all-star games - he hit 58 home runs in 1938 (just two short of Babe Ruth's 1927 record) and was the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1940. Greenberg gave up his $55,000 yearly salary for $21 per month Army pay and reported to Fort Custer, Michigan. He told the Sporting News: 'If there's any last message to be given to the public, let it be that I'm going to be a good soldier.'"

"[May 6, 1941] Playing in his last game before induction into the Army tomorrow, Hank Greenberg hits two home runs to lead Detroit to a 7–4 win over the Yankees. Each time he teams with Bruce Campbell to go back-to-back, the 2nd time in his career he's done it. Rudy York and he teamed up. A few days later OF Joe Gallagher of the Dodgers is drafted. No other regular ML player will be drafted during the season, but several others on training rosters will, as contemporary writers phrase it, 'join the colors.'"

"On December 9th, Hank Greenberg, at 30 years old, re-enlisted after having been discharged from the Army under a new law releasing draftees 28 or older from duty. He admitted 'this doubtless means I'm finished with baseball.' Like Greenberg, Cleveland's 23-year-old pitching sensation, Bob Feller, rushed to enlist as soon as he heard the news of the bombing. Feller joined the United States Navy and served as a chief petty officer aboard the battleship Alabama in the Pacific."

A lot of this is from http://www.baseballlibrary.com/baseb...erpts/wwii.stm which may have been linked earlier in the thread.

And I hate to get all sentimental here...but look at the big deal Pat Tillman caused as a player in this era...and he was the only one!!!!

50 or even a hundred minor leaguers during our grandparents (or parents) time served...Greenberg being a great example of what was important at the time, you'd NEVER see that nowadays and with someone like Tillman they only praised him after he died, thought he was nuts when he enlisted...

Actually I'll be the first to say Swevin Ervin is a 4F, which is a medical or age rejection...in 1942, they took the young guys, by 1943...Ervin will be 35 and technically a reject for Armed Services duty...and FDR will probably want to keep the older players around anyway, so TWB has 'star power'

August 1939

The Yankees went 16-14 but managed to expand their lead over the AL to 10 games. The Senators went 14-14 this month and were unable to capitalize of New York's mediocre play.

The Dodgers went 19-10 and have almost buried the rest of the NL. The decimated Cubs went 12-17 and fell to 5th place and below .500. Brooklyn's Oscar Vancini reached 51 homeruns this month. He is on pace to tie his record of 59, but I would not be surprised if he was shooting for 60. His 51 longballs are more than the entire A's team (41) and just barely less than the Browns and Bees (54 each). Dodgers teammate Jonny Perly stole a record 20 bases this month and is tied for the major league lead with the Giants' Foglesong Allen. Both players have 70 steals and are easily on pace to break Perly's major league record of 76 set just last season.

With a 9-hit shutout of the Bees, Giants pitcher Guy Muir broke the record for most wins by a rookie with his 19th victory. The mark of 18 rookie wins was set back in 1905 by Cubs great Bowie Castellon. Muir is almost a lock to be rookie of the year, and he would be the first ROY to be traded mid-season. He began this season with the Cardinals, going 14-9. He was traded on July 31st for veteran pitcher Abraham Dickens and a relief pitching prospect.

On August 26th, Brooklyn hosted Cincinnati in the first telecasted major league baseball game in history. The Dodgers came back to score 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to win 6-5. As if that was not enough excitement for the first game ever shown on TV, Oscar Vancini picked this day to club his 50th homerun of the season. Announcer Red Barber broadcasted the play-by-play from Ebbets Field on Channel W2XBS, and it was viewed enthusiastically by those with the sets to receive it. View the BOX SCORE here.

FYI: This was the real date that this happened, and it was pure fate that Brooklyn played Cincinnati, since that was the RL matchup. And I did not pick this game simply for its excitement value - Vancini's 50th and the comeback win. No, I didn't discover that until I began writing it up! Amazing TWB history strikes again.

oops... I forgot this.

1939 All-Star Game
Yankee Stadium, New York

BOX SCORE

Pinch hitting Dodger Jeff Bundy was booed as he approached the plate in the 4th inning, but he stroked a 2-out double off hometown Yankee starter Hale Scheepers, scoring 2 runs and giving the NL a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, two Senators combined to tie the game with 2 outs - Carl Kahle doubled and then scored on a single by Wolter Tjeenk-Willink. This then became the first all-star game to go into extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th with Dodgers reliever Garland Reed on the mound, Enos Fletcher, Jimmy Ditty and Leonard Davie hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases with one out. Carl Kahle then hammered a pitch to deep left-center than easily scored the winning run.

September 1939

The Yankees and Dodgers easily cruised to their respective pennants. It's the Yankees' first pennant since 1936 and the Dodgers' first since 1935. Brooklyn won back-to-back pennants in 1934 and 1935, losing both times to the Yankees when New York was in the midst of a 4-year streak of world championships. The Big Apple is buzzing as these two teams will face off once again. Brooklyn manager, and former Yankee manager, Carl Sweeney said in a recent New York Times article that "we'll settle it on the field" in reference to the long-standing feud between these two organizations. Yankee manager Ervin Greiner, who apparently responded after reportedly having his job on the line this season, was quoted as saying, "we all know who won the last two times we played them in the World Series, right? 'Dem bums don't have a chance."

In world news, Germany invaded Poland and on September 1st, Britain and France gave the Germans an ultimatum. They declared war on Germany two days later.

Here at home, the White Sox played the first "day-night" doubleheader against Washington on September 23rd, winning the first one 5-4 and losing the second game 1-4. Fans were charged separate admissions for each game.

The Yankees hope to add to their impressive collection of seven world championships, while Brooklyn hopes to erase the memories of their last two World Series losses and claim their first championship since 1926.

This could be Brooklyn's best chance. They obliterated the NL this season. They have the best offense in the majors and the most well-known major leaguer in history - Oscar Vancini. "The Kid" tied his own major league record with 59 homeruns and set a new major league record with 156 RBI. Teammates Jeff Bundy (26) and Jonathan Wright (18) can hit for power too. The Dodgers lead the majors with a .299 team average, and their pitching staff's 3.78 ERA is best in the majors too. They are anchored by the incredible Frank Smith. This team has some impressive players and they are on a mission to become top dogs in New York.

The Yankees have the most pennants in major league history, now 13. By winning this World Series, they would pass the Phillies for the most championships in history with 7. They actually enter this series as a slight underdog. Their pitching staff is solid with a 3.88 ERA. However, Art Booth, who started the season 20-3, went 4-7 over the final two months, including a 1-4 record and 7.03 ERA in September. Their offense has a strong .290 average, but they scored just the 6th most runs in the big leagues. Jimmy Ditty had an off year and manager Ervin Greiner has decided to bench him in the series in favor of Ping Hung. Hung's brother Chi will be the starting catcher after Greiner tired of the struggles of veteran catcher Harry Finley. No one on this team reached 100 RBI, and they will need to generate runs on the basepaths to stay in every game.

My Prediction: The Dodgers are a freight train this season and should be tough to beat. I expect Brooklyn to win in 5 games.

I guess we can safely predict that Oscar will win BOY #6 to break the record he and Woody Woodson share. Four straight would tie the record set by Pops Falise back from 1925-28.

> SP #1 - Frank Smith, 23-10, 2.71, 166 K

He has a chance at BOY #6. He only won 3 games in September, but that ERA along with the 23 wins might do the trick. It looks like he had a good ERA in September as 2.71 was actually a *drop* from where he was at the end of August. David Wickersham had been leading the NL with a 2.49 ERA, but had so many injuries during the year that he probably didn't have enough wins for a strong POY run even if he maintained the ERA lead. Clint Rohm had been tied with Frank at 20 wins coming into the month, and was about a quater of a run in ERA behind. He'd need to keep pace in both wins (or move ahead) and also try to top Frank's ERA. Six POY would move him out of that tie for second (with Lopresto, Nagel and Jethro Lee) into being just behing Murphy's nine. Of course the White Sox Legend won those nine in ten years, which also happened to be the ten years following his ROY campaign.

Looks like we will have debates over who the greatest was huh?
Woody Woodson (Ty Cobb)
or
Kid Vancini (Babe Ruth)

and with the terribly named Frank Smith we have Lefty Grove

Frank's career was far from over, and I'll wait until then to make my final decision, but I still maintain that Murphy was the best pitcher of all time and utterly dominated the AL.

You notice how I've mentioned Vancini's popularity? Willard Schwarz was a national (and somewhat worldwide) craze in his two huge HR-hitting seasons. But no one has matched the Kid's power numbers & being in Brooklyn, he is becoming the most recognizable player in baseball. Hitting #50 this year in the first game ever televised didn't hurt That's the stuff of legend.

And I'm simming the WS now, so expect it soon.

WEB PAGES UPDATED... INCLUDING WORLD SERIES BOX SCORES

WORLD SERIES

Dodgers 5 - Yankees 4: Frank Smith of Brooklyn and Art Booth of New York faced off in this great matchup of potential POY's. The Dodgers took a 2-0 lead but New York managed a run off Smith in each of the 6th and 7th innings to tie the score. Brooklyn retook the lead with a run in the 8th, but New York tied it in the bottom of the same inning. The Dodgers scored 2 runs in the 10th off reliever Jack Andrade. In the bottom of the inning, Yankees shortstop Clarence Davis led off with a single off Jay Audet. He was then caught of base when "Moonlight" Graham hit a hard line drive that was caught by Brooklyn first baseman Jeff Bundy. Pinch hitter Murray Hofer doubled and scored on a Ping Hung single, but Hung was stranded when Doc Reed flied out.

Dodgers 1 - Yankees 4: New York pitcher Luke Riley took a 1-hit shutout into the 9th but allowed three singles in that inning and one run. However, with runners on the corners and 2 outs in the 9th, Brooklyn second baseman Brad Coffenberger flied out to end the game.

Yankees 11 - Dodgers 4: New York took a 5-2 lead with 4 runs in the 6th inning, but Brooklyn narrowed the lead to 5-4 with runs in the 7th and 8th. However, the Yankees broke open for 6 runs in the 9th and put this game to bed.

Yankees 3 - Dodgers 9: On this day, Brooklyn was all over Art Booth, tagging him with 6 runs in the first 5 innings and 9 runs on the day. Meanwhile, Frank Smith allowed 12 hits but minimized the damage to just 3 runs (2 earned). On a bad note, Yankees rightfielder "Moonlight" Graham broke his hand while making the last out of the game on an outstanding diving play. He will miss the rest of the series and be replaced in the lineup by Benny Laubach.

Yankees 1 - Dodgers 4: This day belonged to Brooklyn starter Remmy Paul, who allowed a run in the 1st inning but nothing else the rest of the day while striking out 7 Yankees. The Dodgers now take a 3-2 series lead back to Yankee Stadium.

Dodgers 2 - Yankees 3: This was a close game, but New York evened the series behind Hale Scheepers, who allowed just 2 runs and 7 hits in a complete-game win.

Dodgers 2 - Yankees 1: What an outstanding Game 7!! Booth and Smith locked up for a great pitchers' duel. Brooklyn scored in the top of the 1st and that was all the scoring we saw until the bottom of the 9th. Smith retired the first 2 runners in the 9th and was one out away from sealing a WS victory when Jimmy Ditty singled. Allen March then singled and Ditty scored when Doc Reed followed with a 3rd straight single, tying the game. With a chance to win the game, Gus Kahle hit a smoking ground ball up the middle that was speared by second baseman Coffenberger, who threw out the slow-running Kahle to end the inning. In the top of the 10th, centerfielder Jon Minzey led off with a triple off Booth. After a ground out, Minzey scored on a deep sacrifice fly by Jonny Perly. In the bottom of the 10th, reliever Jay Audet got three straight outs to vanquish the Yankees and win Brooklyn's first world championship since 1926.

Frank Smith was named World Series MVP, going 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA. He struck out 22 batters in 26 innings, threw one complete game and 9 innings in another.

Trade between Boston (A) and Philadelphia (N) :

Philadelphia (N) gets :
1B William Suggs
Red Sox already have Bing Holt

Boston (A) gets :
2B Maurice Goza
#1 pick overall in the '39 Draft
P Beau Weston
3B Bill Grillati

Looks like my future team is gearing up for my arrival in '46 It would be nice if they drafted a pitcher in this year's batch (hint, hint)

Tremendous World Series. Going all 7, and needing extra innings to decide it. That'll go down as one of the greatest WS of all time. Between two hated rivals nonetheless.

Now, if only the Cardinals would untilize "Flamingo"....

The Kid 1st televised game...by Red Barber...I forgot lol...but what a tale of legend...did he hit a HR?

Ok...let's change his first name to Kid...and we need to think of a nickname for him, because quite frankly Oscar stinks...

Speaking of names...my father yelled at me...stating that his Dad's name was not Edward and he used that only for Americans...his real name is Pernearo
