Is it possible to convert the OOTP manual to a .PDF file? I'd love to get a copy into my iPaq pocket pc.
Also, has anyone printed the manual, and if so, what's the final page count? I'm considering having a hard copy printed and bound at Kinkos. Nothing beats a hard copy. Thanks, Steve |

See if it will convert in Adobe. I know that Joe mentioned that it is 75 pages or so one time.

Since the iPaq comes with Word, there is no need to convert it to .pdf format. Also, I don't know about the v4 manual, but the v3 one runs 40+ pages. I imagine the v4 manual is in the same range, if not a tad more.

Ron,
I don't see a .doc file anywhere. Did you copy it from OOTP 3 or 4? You're right: a .doc file would make things much simpler but I'm not sure it exists within version 4. The current manual is in .chm format--whatever the heck that is--and Adobe can't read it. Thanks, Steve |

Hmmm Steve...well, I only have OOTP4 on my notebook (which I shut down prior to church this evening) so I will have to check it in the a.m. But that is odd that they would change from .doc to .chm (and I am with you on 'what the heck is that?').
I will post a reply when I see what can be done, since I know the v3 manual is a Word document and is on my iPaq, so v4 should have been the same, too.

Some copy/paste info below about CHM files. They are great by the way, and you can print each of the 13 sections out just like any formatted HTML page.
Microsoft HTML Help is a new help system which replaces old help files with .hlp extension. If you are familiar with html format then in simple terms all html docs + images + other files(including java classes) = compressed into one html help file with .chm extention. And yes compression is not only much more when files are compressed in zip format, you also get extra features like :- -search facility -Index -contents Just like browsing in your browser Also, it should take only a couple of minutes to copy/paste each section into a formatted Word DOC file for use away from the keyboard .

Thanks Killebrew :^)
IMO, the HTML Help format is clearly superior to a simple text document. Not only because of the way it organizes data, but because it has a very robust search facility, an indexing component, the ability for users to bookmark key sections of the manual, and the ability to display data in a consistent format regardless of the end user's specs (i.e., any kind of formatting of data in a .doc file would be lost on those who did not have Microsoft Word installed. In the future, though, we will have both HTML Help and printable PDF versions of the manual. Hopefully, that will satisfy most everyone. BTW, I'm glad to see other iPAQ users here. If there is enough interest, we can also easily create Pocket PC (MS Reader) versions of the manual. Heck, maybe we can talk Markus into Pocket PC OOTP 4.0 ;^) Joe |

I agree that the HTML format is great for the PC but my goal is to get a copy of the manual to use while I'm away from the computer.
Joe, I'd love to see an MS Reader version! If you want to whip one up and send it my way to test, I'd be happy to oblige. As for a Pocket PC version of the game--syncing with the PC...my oh my... what could be better? Steve |
