Is there more of an emphasis on one -- or are they equal weight?

Isnt this question obvious or are you just trying to get in your question of the day? Look at the 3 defensive ratings: range, field pct, and arm.

It depends on the position, or at least that's how common wisdom has it. I don't know that any studies have been done. I think it's supposedly (as I've seen it):

1B - FA
2B - Range
3B - FA
SS - Range
LF - Even
CF - Range
RF - Even

In my opinion, range is a little more important. I seem to have more success with higher-range fielders in general. As I've said, I've never tested it.

i agree it wont do you any good if you have a player with great fielding %, but no range..

what position can get away with no range?

and for Arm, probably first basemen only can get away with no arm right?

In general first base and third base can get away with less range, first and, to a lesser extent, second don't require strong arms.

I think range is always more important. More agile fielders' higher error totals are often due to the fact that they get to more balls. Better to have a guy bobble a ball and keep it in front of him than to have a slow guy w/ good hands who'll just have to watch most of them go by.

For catcher, however, range doesn't seem to matter at all -- it's all about passed balls and the throwing game.

Hey now, let's not underestimate his ability to run after that groundball and beat the shortstop to it. <tongue in cheek>

On a more serious note, it may help with defending bunts and limiting wild pitches ... but more than likely it's of most use when tackling a batter from behind who's trying to charge the mound.

Looking at this, it would appear that the most important fielder is the SS! is that right?

This is correct in the game and in real life. Well most important infielder anyway. Centerfield is pretty important as well.

Seeing as you are from England, and probably don't get to see a lot of baseball, I can see how this would be confusing. Think of it this way: most batters are right-handed and most balls will be hit on the ground. That means the SS will be handling a majority of the defensive duty during any given game. Now, since the batter is trying to reach 1st, which is about 70 feet from the SS, he needs a good arm as well.

If you think about how the game is played you can see, realistically, how each position is important from a defensive point of view.

I wonder how much a catcher's range plays into success rate of catching those behind the plate foul balls. They're hit quite often.

And throws to home plate? Are any catcher ratings checked on the tag out/collision?
