Catobase Player Importing Error

I am a first time Catobase user and followed the instructions in the file to the letter. When I clicked on Import Stats I got an error message about halfway through the "Importing Players.csv" file. It directed me to a certain line and told me what to look for. I checked the player line of the Players.csv file in the DATA folder and found nothing out of the ordinary except that the player had an unusual last name which is Matuszek. I then checked the players.html page in my Reports folder and everything was correct there. The player in question does not have a nickname and his Hometown, State, etc are all spelled correctly with no improper spacing or characters.

Am I looking in the wrong folder? The only other file I could think of was the players.dat folder in my League File Folder but you can not edit that file. I am sure this is a simple fix but I need some help.

I am running Catobase 6.0 and OOTP6.

Thanks!

Doc

The problem is with the players.csv file in the data directory. I'm pretty sure that Catobase ignores the header row in the file when counting lines; so, if it says line 11 you actually need to look at line 12.

Yeah, check a couple of lines before and after whatever number it gave you. 9 times out of 10 it is a problem with the nickname, especially if the player was imported from the Lahman database or something similar. If a player's nickname is more than 15 characters, odd characters get inserted instead. It's usually an extra double quote or a square symbol.

Also, be sure to use NotePad or a similar text editor.

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought I found the error and so I made the changes but then when I reimported I got the same error message. When I went back into the players.csv file all the changes I made were not there and I did save my changes. This makes me think I am editing the wrong file but I went into the DATA file and edited the players.csv file so I am just at a loss. Is it normal to make changes to the player.csv file but then have those changes not be there after you reimport? Am I supposed to do something other than click on Import Stats after I make the changes?

Hope you guys can help me out!

You need to uncheck the Run Exporters option on the Options screen. If you don't, the file you changed gets overwritten by the exporters.

Or, and this might be a better way to do it anyway, you can edit the player in OOTP. That way, you won't have to do this again next year.

I took your suggestion of editing the player inside OOTP and it worked perfectly. I really enjoy Catobase and can not imagine doing another career league without because it really adds alot of depth in my opinion. I will be bugging all of the commishes in my online leagues to add it right away!

One final question. When I rerun Catobase at the end of each season do I just keep saving it to the same file or do I need a separate Catobase file for each season?

Thanks for all of your help!

Keep using the same file, that's what gives it the ability to track careers. The file is just an Access database. Use a different one for different leagues, but the same one for the same league. Also, remember that backups are your friends. Either simply copy and paste the file, or use the Backup opton under the Database menu in the game.
