5 Man vs 4 Man Rotation
Are there any disadvantages to going with a 4 man rotation? It seems logical to me that using your 4 best starters would be the best option at any time - can someone fill me in on the downside? Thanks

As far as I can tell, in v.6 with modern settings, you can't do a 4-man. If you do, the AI will put someone from the pen to start on the fifth day.

I've always used a 5 but I assume that using a 4-man rotation can tire out your pitchers more quickly if they don't have high endurance and you stick with a strict 4-man. Higher inning totals and more frequent work increases the chance of injuries or having to leave games tired earlier.

I've always used a 5 man. then in the playoffs i use a 3 man. I dont like taking a risk in the regular season with 4 man rotations.

Ive always used a strict-rotation four man. Its works very well. Then I keep 6 MR and 1 closer. Its also much more cost effective, as starters demand much more money than middle relief. I have always avoided a starter with a "prone" injury rating. This can come back to haunt you if you have a four man rotation. Other than that, the pithchers always seem to pitch fine on three days rest.

My starters with a 3 in endurance couldn't handle starting on three days rest twice in a row. They'd drop from 100 pitches to 80, and I'd only get four innings out of them. I suppose if you had four guys with endurances in the 4 or 5, you might be able to do it.

I'm leading my division in my sim by half a game right now. The 4 man rotation is really a risky experiment. Just make sure you have guys with good durations......and a very good bullpen.

In my online league, in the OOTP5 days, I'd use a 4-man rotation. Never had a problem in 4 years, the 4-man rotation would work just fine.
However, with OOTP6, it's a whole other ballgame. Two weeks into the seasons, the computer lists pitchers as tired even after three days rest, which wasn't the case in OOTP5, with the exact same pitchers (endurance ratings: 8, 9, 9, 8). The computer uses a 5th man for the rotation even though I set it to 4-man, which doesn't please me at all .Anyway, I tried changing the league settings (typical rotation: 4-man, pitcher endurance: Very good), and pitchers on three days rest were still tired (although I did not sim under these settings, I suppose that's something I should do). A board search didn't help me, can anyone?

If you are talking about 3 days rest for a starting pitcher, 3 days is not nearly enough rest in between starts. Starters typically have 5 days of rest in between starts. Most middle releivers will be o.k. on 2-3 days rest if they have not pitched a lot of innings. In OOTP6 you can make a 3,4, or 5 man rotation. If you make a 4 man rotation there will be a spot starter, or 5th starting pitcher, in the event the schedule gets heavy and the starting guys in your regular 4 man rotation need a rest.
If the 5th starter is being automaticlly selected for you by the computer just customize your rotation and save the settings. Make sure there is not a pitcher in the "spot starter" slot. If you have 5 starting pitchers on the roster the computer may automatically make your 5th guy a spot starter. |

Renn... I've played multiple hours of OOTP since version 3 came out... no offense, I know your intentions are good, but you're not teaching me anything.
Pitchers usually pitch on 5 days rest? You have 6 men rotations? I do have a spot starter, but he acts like a regular member of the rotation, and that concerns me. If I wanted him to start every 5 days, I'd insert him in a 5-man rotation! I have a 4-man rotation, meaning that my players pitch on 3 days rest. It was perfectly fine in OOTP5, but all of a sudden, it doesn't work in OOTP6 anymore. Another issue I have is that my 5 starters (4 in the rotation, plus my crappy extra) are ALL tired. I thought it was weird. It turns out my spot starter pitched an inning of relief yesterday, pitching 9 pitches. Apparently, that's more than he can bear... he's listed as "tired" while pitching 9 pitches in the past 5 days. His endurance rating is... 10.

Maybe you have to change the settings to pull your pitchers a little earlier in case the computer leaves them in to long. I have also noticed that if I have 5 starting pitchers on my roster and the game set to a 4 man rotation, the computer will insert the 5th starter in the spot rotation slot. I have also noticed that the pitchers will at times all be tired for no apparent reason. The only way to find out would be to analyze the schedule to see if there were a lot of games in a row or some big blowouts. However, I haven't done this yet.

How about setting it to 4-man with a spot starter and have it set for highest rested starter instead of strict 4 man rotation.

I like to use the 4 man rotation. I like to give my pitchers more of an opportunity to win more games. As long as you have at least one, or two pitchers that can spot start. You should have no problems.

For example take the ace of a staff, like the Yankees' Mike Mussina. Day 1: Mike Mussina -- work day Day 2: Kevin Brown -- rest day #1 Day 3: Javier Vazquez -- rest day #2 Day 4: Jon Lieber -- rest day #3 Day 5: Jose Contreras -- rest day #4 Day 6: Mike Mussina -- work day That's four days of rest between starts. There are five men in a rotation, so you and four other guys. You get a break when the other guys are pitchings, so that's four days of rest. Other than a scheduled off-day, the only way to get 5 days of rest is to have a 6-man rotation. So going with a 4-man rotation means having three days' of rest, which is only one fewer than usual. |

I think its important to make this clear:
1) There was no reason in OOTP5 not to run a 4 man rotation in a 5 man era, or a 3 man rotation in a 4 man era. The reason being once you had three days of rest, the pitcher was completly rested. There is no difference. 2) There are big reasons not to in OOTP6. On the 4th day, in OOTP6, pitchers are still tired. This is new. They will therefore perform worse. I for one am happy with the change. Even if it proably isn't a 100% accurate sims, and (as a guy who uses a 4 man roto in a 5 man era in an on-line league) its nice to know that my attempts to drag my floundering expansion team out of the gutter won't be allowed when we convert! |

Anyway, now that you've cleared that up, is there no way to change that? If we set the typical rotation size to 4, and increase starters' endurance to, say, "normal", will it change once simming has started?
