I can't install the new patch

I try to unzip it into my OOTP folder but it doesn't show up after running the unzip. Do I need a different program to unzip it or something?

Well, patch isn't a "zip" file it is an ".exe" file.

well when I click on it it starts running an extract. Is it supposed to do this?

Yes, it is an executable file, you should have an option to browse and select the folder it is unzipped into.

exactly. everything works fine and it appears to extract but nothing ever shows up...

The files in the patch are "overwriting" old files in the game directory, you shouldn't see "new files" appear.

you can determine what version you now have installed by viewing the upper left-hand corner of the front menu. It should now be 6.02a.

I thought it would prompt me to overwrite the existing file but it didn't.

So it was actually working I just didn't realize it.
