As a fairly new user, I'm trying to find a good roster file for Career League play, anytime in the last 2-3 years. Does anyone had a favorite roster that is a very good recommendation? I just need some suggestions. If you'd rather answer by e-mail (simeons_moment@yahoo.com), please feel free to do so.
Thanks! |

Jway/Maz's 40 man roster files (think there were 2 versions) has probably been used the most. King Of Diamonds had one or 2 versions out (his 1st version is still my fave roster set), and recently Rolen has done a major edit to the Jway/Maz rosters.
I like the Rolen rosters a lot and they are a lot of fun, but they have a few problems, especially if you use them for solo play. The durability bug showed up in these rosters which is a pretty big deal, and also the very full minor league systems will actually cause many hot prospects to fizzle out due to massive logjams in nearly every teams minor league system. In a case like this, somethimes more is not better - I think a smaller roster set with all the key system prospects would give you much better results in solo play. Rolens rosters should work great in online leagues though, where live GM's can "prune" their systems by releasing many of the minor leaguers. |

Once Baseball America releases their prospect boook, it will be easier to knock down each team's system to their top 30 prospects which will scouted in the book.

In solo play, I reccomend a roster file with no more than 40-man rosters, particularly JWay's I believe, but Rolen's rosters are nice to look around. You may need to release some players. That's what I did, cutting his rosters to 40 from nearly 100 players. Another thing you could do is "advance" Rolen's prospects a few years, editing the low-level prospects enough so that they would be able to play AAA ball and still be in your top 10. This would probably help them from getting jammed, as Killebrew mentioned.

I'm using the KoD set, but I believe some prospects aren't in the set. I might switch over to a new one, but I think I'll end up waiting till OOTP4 comes out.

Well we all should know what my favorite roster file will be. Personally I think that cutting it down to 40 is too low, while over 100 might be too high. I agree that it does stunt the growth of some of the prospects but guess what that happens in real life and if you have the rosters too low like 40 then what is the use in having three levels of minor leagues if you have 5 or less players in them. I would think that having a player at the positions in each level would be good. Maybe only having 4 SP's at a level and 4 Mr's and 2 C's and 1 at each other position would be pretty good because it would allow for the players to get the playing time that they need. Also if every player grows fully then that is not really realistic, that is why the teams in real life have so many guys playing on their teams. It so when some of the players fizzle out they have another one to move into his place. There are more Brien Taylors out there that never live up to their potential than there are Roy Oswalts that are into the majors and domintating at such a young age. That is just my opinion, but I do agree that the roster set that I created is great for league play on the Internet, and might be tough for individual play but when looking at it, it causes the unknowns like in real life to actually occur. Just my humble opinion as I do respect the differing opinions of Killebrew and Blind Jerry.

I agree with the rest of you guys, Rolen's roster is great for online, but the AI doesn't prune so it makes it rather clumsy for solo play and gives the human manager a big advantage. When I was just doing solo leagues, I just used the roster that came with the game and determined who players were by looking at their stats and teams they were on and checking my wonderful Stats Inc. Major League Handbook. BUt then again, I've been told by many people that i'm crazy and obsessed ... I think that's a bit far

It will probably take longer to save than the smaller roster files as there are over 3000 players in the file, so I would think that would cause a longer time than the 1500 player files would.

hfo (don't feel like typing your whole name atm)
The larger save times are a function of the larger database. How much RAM do you have? When the save times start bogging down too much it is often a signal that the database for that league has started to outgrow the amount of memory you have avaiable to the game (the game slows WAY down if you don't have enough memory to be able to store the entire database in memory, forcing you to read/write to temporary files), you may have to kill off some background programs, or simply prune some of the minor leagues down to smaller levels. |

Yeah all the extra players probably caused it to slow down. It didn't get slowed down that much but it was noticeably slower than usual. I never had any problems before, so it kinda surprised me.

Plus as the seasons go by and players retire and more are created it just gets to be even bigger.
