Benito Penna - Italy
Heavyweight 1962-76 33 wins / 19 losses / 4 draws / 20 KO Birthplace: Cremona, Italy Benito started out 14-0-0,9KO's when he lost to Piero Tomasoni in Jan. 1964 in an eliminator for the Italian HW Title. Wins up to that time included two over Rene Goubelle, Werner Wiegand, Erwin Hack, Mariano Echevarria, Federico Friso and Jose Gonzales. He followed up that first loss to Tomasoni with 4 wins out of 5 fights including an 8th round TKO of Tomasoni in a rematch. He was 18-2-0 with 13KO's then when in Jan 1965 he got to fight for the Italian HW Title against Sante Amonti. Amonti KO'd Penna in the 8th round and after that his career was an up and down affair. Including the Amonti loss he went only 15-17-4,7KO's the rest of his career. He did fight one other time for the Italian HW Title, that late in his career when he lost a 12 round decision in Dec. 1975 to Dante Cane. The only other noteable win in Penna's career after his defeat of Tomasoni in 1964 was a 6th round KO of Wim Snoek. He did manage an 8 round draw with Eduardo Corletti. Other fights against better competition all ended in losses. Those losses were to Dante Cane in 1966 followed by Johnny Prescott, Billy Gray, Eduardo Corletti, Peter Weiland, Mario Baruzzi, Alfio Righetti and finally to Alfredo Evangelista to finish his career. |

Uber Bacilieri - Italy
Heavyweight 1950-58 24 wins / 20 losses / 7 draws / 7 KO Hometown/Birthplace: Copparo, Italy Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto A busy European heavyweight fighting 52 times in an 9 year career. His career started out not that all flashy looking in going only 8-3-3,2KO's, including losses to Conny Rux and Hein ten Hoff. In April 1952 though, he fought and defeated a Giorgio Milan in a 12 round decision to win the Italian Heavyweight Title. Over the next couple years he went only 4-3-1,1KO,1NC including losses to Don Cockell and Jack Gardner. In October 1954 he defended his Italian HW Title against Franco Cavicchi but lost being KO'd by Franco in the 10th round. From then through May 1956 he was a dismal 6-7-2,2KO's. The most noteable win being a 5th round TKO over Henry Cooper. Losses included to Ingemar Johansson, Werner Wiegand, Joe Erskine, Cooper, Joe Bygraves and Kitione Lave. Then in August 1956 he fought again for the Italian HW Crown winning it back with a 12 round decision over Antonio Crosia. That was followed with a win, draw, and loss over Jose Gonzales, Federico Friso and Mario de Persio respectively. IN Aug. 1958 he defeated Crosia again in a 12 round decision to defend his title. Bacilieri then lost to Mino Bozzano and beat Alain Cherville before he defeated Federico Friso to successfully defend again his Italian Title. He finished out his career though in 1958 though with 5 fights of mostly failure. He lost to Cavicchi after defeating Friso, then fought an 8 round draw with Rocco Mazzola before finishing out his career by first loosing the Italian HW Title to de Persio and then lost two straight fights to Massimo Zanaboni. Bacilieri mixed it up in his career with quite a few of the name European heavyweights of the 50's. Majority of those fights though ended in losses thus probably preventing him from climbing higher in the European ranks outside of Italy. |

Italian HW
Finally to Rocco Mazzola. I've actually rated him both as a HW and LHW which I'll post both. Attached here is the HW version.
Rocco Mazzola - Italy Heavyweight 1960-62(Years fought primarily as HW) 26 wins / 12 losses / 3 draws / 10 KO Birthplace: Potenza, Italy Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto From 1955 thru 1959 BoxRec. records would indicate Mazzola fought mainly as a Light Heavyweight. He compiled a 13-0-1,7KO record up thru July 1957. Then on the last day of July 1957 he fought Alessandro D'Ottavio for the then vacant Italian Light Heavyweight Title. D'Ottavio won a 12 round decision over Mazzola. These two fought a rematch in December of that year and this time, Mazzola was the winner by 12 round decision. These two then fought again in June 1958 for the Italian LHW Title with Mazzola successfully defending his title by 3rd round TKO. Then in Sept. 1958 Mazzola fought Domenico Baccheschi for the Italian title and lost to Baccheschi by 11th round TKO. After a few months layoff, and an 8 round decision win over Jacques Bro, Mazzola then went after the European Light Heavyweight Title against Erich Schoppner. Schoppner was the winner by decision in the 15 round fight. A couple months after the Schoppner fight, Mazzola took one last stab at the Italian LHW Title but lost to Sante Amonti by 12 round decision. After defeating Giulio Rinaldi a month after the Amonti fight, Mazzola then lost three straight fights to Mike Holt, Rinaldi and Paul Roux to finish out a busy 1959. Going into 1960 then, Mazzola took a turn with his career and moved up fighting mainly in the heavyweight rankings. In 1960 he won fights over Mariano Echevarria and Federico FRiso, but lost fights to Gustav Scholz, Jose Gonzales and Plinio Scarabellin. That didn't stop Mazzola though from taking at shot at the Italian Heavyweight Title against Friso in May 1961. Mazzola won the fight and the title by 12 round decision. In Oct. 1961 he fought a 12 round draw with Franco Cavicchi and then own a 12 round decision rematch for the Italian HW Title over Friso in December. Then in early 1962 after winning a 5th round victory by DQ over Bert Whitehurst, Mazzola fought Cavicchi again for the Italian HW Title. This time Cavicchi was the victor by 12 round decision. At that time then Mazzola hung up the gloves. |

Belgium HW/LHW
Rating a few Belgiums who fought for Belgian HW/LHW titles.....
First up Lion Ven - Belgium Light Heavyweight - 1961-70 He held the Belgian titles in both Light HW and HW, but fought primarily as a Light HW even though BoxRec lists him as a HW. 21 wins / 18 losses / 1 draw / 13 KO Birthplace: Gent, Belgium Rating by Rocco Del Sesto Lion held the Belgium Light Heavyweight Title from 1964-1968 when in Sept 1968 he defeated Jose Peyre for the Belgium Heavyweight Title. One year later in 1969 he fought Valere Mahau for the Belgium HW Title defeating Mahau by 4th round TKO. Five years earlier in 1964 Mahau was whom Lion had defeated in first claiming the Belgium Light Heavyweight Title. AFter defeating Mahau, Lion fought one more time, in January 1970 getting KO'd in the 2nd round by Jose Manuel Urtain. Other fights of note in Lion's career were a 4th round TKO loss to Yvan Prebeg, an 8 round decision win over Leen Jansen, a 8th round decision loss to Pekka Kokkonen, and 8th round TKO loss to Paul Roux, a 2nd round TKO loss to Jack Bodell, a 5th round TKO loss to Joe Bugner and a 4th round KO loss to Piero Del Papa. So as we can see most of his fights with anyone of any noted talent he lost. |

Belgium HW/LHW
Marcel Limage - Belgium
Heavyweight 1951-1959 29 wins / 17 losses / 1 draw / 12 KO Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto After building a 16-0-0 record in his native Belgium against utter nobodys whom most did not even have any career wins when they fought Limage, Limage fought another nobody for the Belgian Light Heavyweight Title. Limage KO'd Victor d'Haes in the 8th round in March 1953. LImage held the LHW Title in Belgium for the next 3 years until he fought Alain Cherville in NOvember 1956 for the Belgian Heavyweight Title. Cherville KO'd LImage in the 6th round. After his 17-0-0 start, Limage then went only 12-17-1 the rest of his career as he started fighting opponents who at least had some ring time. Some of those later opponents included Willi Hopner, Albert Finch, Willi Besmanoff, Cherville, Andre Wyns, Hans Friedrich, Joe Ershine, Dick Richardson, Joe Bygraves, Pedro Klyssens, Hans Kalbfell, and Mino Bozzano. |

Belgium Heavyweight
Piet Wilde
Heavyweight 1945-1954 31 wins / 17 losses / 2 draws / 15 KO Birthplace: Brugge, Belgium Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto After 6 professional fights, a 5-1-0 record including two wins over Robert Eugene who was just starting his career, Wilde fought Pierre van Deuren(1-6-0 at the time!) for the Belgian Heavyweight Title in March 1946. Wilde lost a 12 round decision. In November of that year thos two fought again for the Belgian title, this time Wilde KO'd van Deuren in the 10th round. Wilde defended his title, beating Robert Eugene by 12 round decision in April 1948. Before that fight he beat Gunnar Barlund by way of a 10th round DQ. He then lost a 10 round decision to Jack London, lost by 7th round KO to Eugene in an earlier fight and lost by 8th round KO to Stephane Olek. After beating Eugene in the title fight, he later lost an 8 round decision to Kurt Schiegl, beat Jack London in an 8 round decision, then lost 2 fights to Johnny Williams. He defeated Paddy Slavin in 10 rounds in June 1950 then lost to Tommy Farr in his very next fight by 4th round KO. Hein ten Hoff KO'd Wilde in the first round in March 1951, and then Werner Wiegand Ko'd him in the 2nd round right after that. Two months later Heinz Neuhaus KO'd him in 2. During all this time, somewhere along the line, Wilde relinquished the Belgian HW Title somehow because in March 1952 BoxRec shows him and Robert Eugene fighting again for the title which BoxRec indicates as being vacant at the time. Wilde wins by 10th round TKO. In 1953 he fights Hans Friedrich 3 straight fights, drawing the first and winning decisions in the next two. In December 1953 he defeats a Young Al Bernard(2-4-1) defending his Belgian HW Title. Less then a month later Heinz Neuhaus KO's him in 4. Then in May 1954, He fights Robert Eugene for the 5th and final time in his career, again to defend the Belgian HW Title. This time, Eugene KO's Wilde in the 1st round and sends Piet into retirement. |

Another Belgian HW Champ!
Pierre van Deuren - Belgium
Heavyweight 1941-47 3 wins / 9 losses / 0 draw / 2 KO His first 4 career fights he lost by TKO or KO. First to Karel Sys, then to Gustave Roth, then to a Rienus De Boer and finally to Karel Sys again. Finally in Oct. 1943 he went the distance win a fight for the first time taking Roth through 10 rounds only to loose for the 5th time. Two months leater he defeated an Al Gerard for his first win. Karel Sys then KO'd him in 1 round in Jan. 1944. Pierre then didn't fight for 2 years, when in March 1946 he went up against Piet Wilde to fight for the Belgian HW Title. He defeated Wilde in a 12 round fight, only his 2nd career win! Later in November that year those two fought again with Wilde taking the Belgian Title from van Deuren by way of a 10th round KO. He finished up his career in 1947 with a win over somebody and then KO losses to Stephane Olek and Carl Nielsen. A pretty glass jaw van Deuren had with 8 of his 9 losses via KO. |

jim cully
Here is a file for Jim Cully, a 7'2" Irish giant. Cully fought twice in Ireland in 1948 (going 1-1) and was then brought to the US as the "Champion of Ireland." On these shores he scored a first round KO (possibly a fix) and was then KO'D in 3 by Earl "Red" Pierce, a cruiserweight sized heavy who went 4-3 in his career. After the Pierce debacle the NY Commission revoked Cully's license. In the August 1948 Ring, Nat Fleischer lamented Cully's presence in the fight game then, in classic Fleischer style, devoted a article, a full page photo spread, and the lead in an article about over-sized heavies to him.

Belgium LHW
Pol Goffaux - Belgium
Light Heavyweight 1941-49 8 wins / 7 losses / 1 draw / 0 KO Manager: Raoul Baudoux Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Lost his first 2 fights, to Gustave Roth(113-11-12,24) and Luc van Dam(79-15-3,32), both of whom are rated in the game. His loss to van Dam was in June 1942. Later in October of '42, Goffaux went into the ring again against Roth, this time fighting for the Belgian LIght Heavyweight Title. Goffaux pulled off what was probably a very surprising 12 round decision victory over Roth. Those two fought a rematch two months later. Again Goffaux pulls off what still had to be looked at as an upset with another 12 round decision over Roth to retain his title. In April of 1943 Pol decided to try and move up in rank and fought fellow Belgium HW Karel Sys. Sys won by 7th round TKO. After that Goffaux didn't fight again for almost a year before fighting Roth again for the Belgiam LHW crown. This time, Roth came out the victor in a 12 round decision. Goffaux and Roth fought one last time, in which turned out to be Roth's last career fight, over a year later in 1945. They fought to a 10 round draw. After a win over Piet Wilde in Wilde's first career fight and a 6th round KO loss to Stephane Olek, Goffaux reclaimed the Belgian LHW Title with another 12 round decision, this time over a Ferdinand Honore in March 1946. Goffaux successfuly defended his title three times in 1946 and early 1947. In Sept 1947 he fought Freddie Mills for the then vacant European LHW Title. He was no match for Mills as Freddie KO'd Goffaux in the 4th round. In March 1948 Pol fought one last time for his Belgian LHW Title, defeating a newcomer in the Belgium boxing scene, Prosper Beck(whom we'll look at later). Goffaux wins another 12 round decision. He then fights only one more time in his career, a whole year later, lossing an 8 round decision to Svend Aage Christensen(17-6-0,5) from Denmark. |

Wondering if anyone has rated a LIght HW named Mel Brown who from 1945-55 fought 76 times with a 52-20-4,27 record? I'm looking at the opponents for another Belgium I'm looking to rate and Brown is one of them. Hoping maybe someone might have done him already at one time or another with the record he has and save me a little bit of work.

Denmark HW
Carl Nielsen - Denmark
Heavyweight 1946-1950 27 wins / 10 losses / 3 draws / 17 KO Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto A busy heavyweight out of Denmark who fought 40 times in just a little over 4 years. Nielsen fought mainly out of his native Denmark in Copenhagen. Most of those fights were against the mostly unmentionable of Danish boxing. A few names though you will recognize from the game and those rated by others include a draw and a 5 round KO loss to Jo Weidin. He fought stephane Olek twice lossing both times, once in Belgium and once in France. He fought Alberto Santiago Lovell in Barcelona, Spain getting KO'd in 6 by Lovell. He defeated Pierre van Deuren, Alf Brown and Piet Wilde twice. He also beat Robert Eugene but lost by 7th round KO to Kurt Schiegl. His last career fight was against Prosper Beck, whom we'll talk about later. Enough of names there to make it worth the while rating Nielsen. |

Jo-el Scott
Jo-el Scott Heavyweight 20-2 19 KOs
A talented Heavy from Albany, NY who never lived up to the early to mid-90's hype. He had issues with drug abuse and served 4 years in state prison for rape. He was on HBO two times and won on both occassions via quick KO, but was knocked down early on one of the bouts. His lone decent win was agianst Kimmuel Odum who is a trial horse on his best day. His two defeats, both after his prison release came against: Ray Austin Frances Royal Scott has big time power, with little durability.
