Jason Schmidt

How long before this guys arm falls off? He is coming off of shoulder trouble and threw 120+ pitches in his last two outings before tonight. Tonight against the Cubs he threw 144 pitches! And I thought Dusty was bad.

Great game by Schmidt, but 144 pitches seems downright criminal.

Schmidt's a Proven Veteran. He'll be fine, just like Robb Nen.

Maybe Felipe went to the Grady/Dusty school of managing.

I was at the game last night. Great game pitched by Schmidt. Clement pitched pretty well too, scattering 6 hits. He got a bit wild late in the game, but managed to get out of the inning. I got some good pics which I might post later.

Go Alou! Good to see a manager who doesn't buy into the liberal theory of coddling!

How long was the game?

Pitchcounts are meaningless.

Eh. 2:49 isn't bad.

3 hours from the point of warming up is about as long as I'd leave a pitcher in a game.

I'd be more worried if the score had been 6-0 through 6 innings, he had thrown 80 pitches, and the game had been going for over 3 hours.

Great game to go to, too bad the result wasn't better and missing out on Sammy vs. Bonds.

So you got some complete new theory that's not publicly published anywhere?

Tom Kelly used to use time, didn't he?

Joe Mays was pulled after pitching 8 2/3 innings on Saturday night. He didn't give up a hit until the 5th, didn't give up a second hit until the 8th, and after eight innings he had given up only two hits, two walks and still had a shutout. AND he'd only thrown 104 pitches. So, Kelly sends him out to start the 9th and hopefully get the complete game shutout. But things don't go as well for Mays, and he gives up three hits and one run and has two outs but has thrown 117 pitches. At that point, Kelly brings in Jack Cressend. Jack does his job, striking out Dee Brown for the final out.

The next day on The Tom Kelly Show on WCCO radio, he is lambasted by fans at the State Fair for pulling Mays in the 9th and for pulling Radke on Tuesday after 72 pitches. In that case, Radke was making his first start after being on the DL, but he left with the lead, Cressend came in again, and gave up 3 home runs on seven pitches to lose the lead. Kelly was initially questioned by the hosts about pitch counts and Kelly's rationale was:

1) We're in a pennant race, and throwing too many pitches in one start can effect the next start, and we need our pitchers to be strong for their next start.
2) Throwing too many pitches can jeopardize young pitchers careers, and "I like to sleep at night."

Perhaps somebody indeed has used time instead of pitch count, but what's the theory behind that? And what proves it to be better than pitch count?

Not saying its better, just trying to remember whether he had or not

I would think that there is something said for lay-off times between pitching, but aren't most arm injuries through overwork (tears etc.) rather than tension, caused by throwing with a stiffer arm? I'd still put weight on amount of work than time of work.

Oh, I've no idea.
