April 1932
Washington shocked the AL by jumping out to a fast start, but by April's end they were barely above .500. Instead, the Browns became the talk of the league. They lead the AL by a game over the Yankees, thanks in large part to a 10-game winning streak that saw them sweep the Tigers and Indians before losing the last game of a 3-game series against the Red Sox. St. Louis currently has the best offense in the majors, but if they hope to continue winning, they will need improvement out of their pitching staff. Currently, 23-year-old Gerald Saxton is leading them with a 4-1 record and 2.19 ERA, but the rest of the staff has been lousy. Brooklyn came out with guns blazing this month, and they finished with the best record in the majors. They only series they did not win was against the defending World Champion Braves, who are just 3 games above .500. The Reds were hot, as well. Both Cincinnati and the Dodgers have some of the best stats around so far. Meanwhile, the Phillies worst fears are materializing. They have great pitching, but the offense, which has the lowest batting average in the majors, cannot score runs consistently. After years of offensive decline, it must only be a matter of time before Philadelphia begins parting with some of their stockpile of solid starting pitchers in return for improved hitting. Batters of the Month: AL - Woody Woodworth, 2B, St. Louis Browns - He hit .457 with 3 home runs, 18 RBI and 17 runs scored. NL - "Big Lou" Zaitz, LF, St. Louis Cardinals- He hit .411 with 8 home runs, 27 RBI and 14 runs scored. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Jethro "Dodge" Lee, Washington Senators - He was 5-1 with a 1.67 ERA and a shutout. NL - Frank Smith, Brooklyn Dodgers- He was 5-0 with a 0.45 ERA and 2 shutouts. Code:

Good news out of Boston. Braves OF George Ward was happy to announce the arrival of his first son Dennis on the 17th of this month. "I'm hoping that someday he'll be a big leaguer just like me, " said the happy father.

May 1932
The Browns went 16-12 this month and maintained their lead in the AL. The Yankees and Senators treaded water and are both within easy striking distance of St. Louis, while the White Sox slipped 6 games back with a 12-16 May record. The Browns continue to have one of the best hitting teams in the majors, plus they draw a lot of walks and score plenty of runs. That has helped mask an average pitching staff. The Yankees have one of the best pitching staffs in the league, but have been only adequate so far offensively. Washington, however, has been very good on both ends, with the 4th best team batting average and 5th best team ERA in the majors. With that kind of overall stability, they may be the early favorite to pull away in the pennant race. The Braves took over first place in the NL after going 19-8 this month. Brooklyn fell 3 games behind Boston thanks to a 12-14 month. The Phillies were a game below .500 before going on an 11-game winning streak, which put them in first place temporarily. However, they struggled as the month ended and are now 4 games back. Tied with Philadelphia are the Reds, who were 13-11 in May. Batters of the Month: AL - Kid Fite, 2B, Detroit Tigers - He hit .465 with 5 home runs, 23 RBI, 27 runs scored and 5 steals. NL - Kevin Stines, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .460 with 28 RBI and 14 runs scored. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Jethro "Dodge" Lee, Washington Senators - He was 4-3 with a 1.31 ERA and 3 shutouts! NL - David Wickersham, Chicago Cubs - He was 6-0 with a 2.11 ERA. Code:

After taking losses in his first two attempts, he finally collected win #300 on May 7th in a 1-run victory over the White Sox. He is just the 5th picther in history to pass this milestone! "Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, Browns - Ned returned to the rotation and responded by going 3-2 with a 2.94 ERA and a shutout. Unfortunately, he tore a muscle in his back during his last start and will miss the remainder of the season. His talent in taking walks took a drop. He is now 322-261 over his career, but his future in the big leagues is now in question. Whiskey Allen, Jr., SP, Braves - Junior went 5-0 with a 3.27 ERA and a shutout. WEB PAGES UPDATED... INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES...
June 1932 The Browns went just 12-14 in June but again managed to remain on top of the AL. The A's went 20-8 and have exploded into a tie with Washington for 2nd Place. With the Yankees and White Sox still slumping, there are now 5 teams within 3.5 games of each other atop the league. The Phillies busted out with a 21-8 record this month, which shotputted them to the top of the NL. Boston went just 13-14, and they fell into a 2nd place tie with Cincinnati at 3 games back. With the Reds and Dodgers hanging tough, the top four NL teams are separated by just 4 games. It looks like both leagues will have good pennant races this year. With the Indians desperately trying to rebuild their pitching staff, they traded heavy hitting outfielder Jeff Tiptmann to the Cubs for young pitcher Tom "The Octopus" Mierhofer and a minor league pitching prospect. Mierhofer gained his nickname in his rookie season because his Chicago teammates said his gangly arms and flailing pitching motion reminded them of the eight-armed sea creature. The Cubs then lost last month's POTM David Wickersham until early August with an arm injury. They already had their #2 starter Alex Winterhalter out with sholder woes. However, they felt they needed offensive help to really compete for the pennant, but with 3 of their top 4 opening day starters injured or traded, they are quickly falling out of the race. Batters of the Month: AL - Kid Fite, 2B, Detroit Tigers - He hit .381 with an unbelievable 10 homeruns, 25 RBI, 22 runs scored and 6 steals! With 18 homeruns on the season, he has already tied a career high with half the season yet to go. NL - Keith Laverick, 1B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .420 with 4 homeruns, 25 RBI and 26 runs scored. Depite the fact that the Cardinals are 13 games back and in 5th Place, they have had all 3 NL BOTM this season. Pitchers of the Month: AL - "Punchy" Cote, Philadelphia Athletics - He was 5-0 with a 2.38 ERA and 2 shutouts. NL - Scott Fenner, Philadelphia Phillies - He was 6-1 with a 1.73 ERA and a shutout. He is 15-1 on the season and did not lose his first game until June 23rd against the Cardinals! Code:

July 1932
The AL is as wide open as it has ever been. The Browns went 11-14. Their recent lackluster play finally caught up to them as the Yankees pulled into first place late in the month. However, no team has taken control of the league, and 5 teams are separated by just 2.5 games. The Phillies and Braves, behind incredible starting pitching, have pulled away from the pack in the NL. Philadelphia still holds a lead, but Boston has narrowed it to just 1 game. Both teams have all 4 starting pitchers in the top 15 ERA's in the NL! Boston has the best ERA in the majors at 3.24, but Philadelphia is right behind them at 3.25. The Phillies have the 9th best team batting average, and the Braves are 10th. The Phillies have scored the 5th most runs, the Braves 6th. They are very evenly matched, and it has showed. The one hitter who stands out is slugging Phillies catcher Willard Schwarz, who has 32 homeruns to date and is on pace to break his own incredible record of 40 longballs hit just 3 seasons ago. Batters of the Month: AL - "Moonlight" Graham, RF, New York Yankees - He hit .379 with 3 homeruns, 24 RBI, 17 runs scored and 9 steals. August 1932
At the end of May, the A's were below .500. Now, three months later, they are sitting on top of the AL. They went 18-11 and have a 1-game lead over the Yankees. Washington pulled to within 1 game of the A's for a time, but they lost 11 of their last 18 games and are now 4 back. After doing so well for the first half of the season, the Browns now are just 1 win above .500. The Braves went 17-11 and have moved into first place again. The Phillies went 13-15 in August and slid 3 games back. Cincinnati is still playing tough, and although they are in 3rd place, they currently have a better record than any AL team. Phillies catcher Willard Schwarz continues to dazzle Phillies fans. After obliterating the previous major league record with an astounding 40 homeruns in 1929 (becoming the first player to hit 30 or 40), he has tied his own record with another 40 longballs this season. The amazing fact is that one month remains in the season! With this incredible outburst, he has taken over 1st place on the all-time homerun leaderboard with 247, passing teammate John "Pops" Falise, who has had little playing time this year, but remains on the team as a bench coach and pinch hitter in hopes of winning one more pennant. Batters of the Month: AL - Tyrell Chestnut, RF, Boston Red Sox - He hit .408 with 7 homeruns, 30 RBI, 26 runs scored and 9 steals. NL - Howard "Cookie" Parrish, 1B, Chicago Cubs - He hit .392 with 6 homeruns, 15 RBI and 20 runs scored. Pitchers of the Month: AL - Luke Riley, New York Yankees - He was 6-0 with a 0.89 ERA and a shutout. NL - Bourbon Allen, Boston Braves - He was 3-0 with a 0.29 ERA and 2 shutouts. Code:

September 1932
To say baseball enjoyed two great pennant races this month would be an understatement. I will sum it up by saying that with just 3 days remaining in the season, both the AL and NL had two teams tied for the league lead. The Yankees and A's were tied and faced each other in the final series, while the Braves faced 3rd place Cincinnati and the Phillies played the below-.500, but steadily-improving Cubs. The A's won the first two games of their series with the Yankees, clinching their first pennant in three seasons. The Phillies and Braves both went 2-1 in their series and finished in a dead heat. The two teams then had to play a single game to decide the pennant winner. The Phillies put up 8 runs in the first 5 innings against Whiskey Allen, Jr., but the Braves scored 3 runs in the top of the 8th to narrow Philadelphia's lead to 9-7. However, the bottom of the Braves lineup was unable to get anything going in the 9th, and the Phillies return to the World Series for the 5th time in 7 years. This will also be the 3rd intracity matchup for the Phillies and A's. The Phillies won both of the first two. Code:
American League Standings Philadelphia (A) 88 66 .571 - New York (A) 87 67 .565 1.0 Boston (A) 80 74 .519 8.0 St. Louis (A) 78 76 .506 10.0 Chicago (A) 76 78 .494 12.0 Washington 75 79 .487 13.0 Cleveland 67 87 .435 21.0 Detroit 65 89 .422 23.0 National League Standings Philadelphia (N) 95 60 .613 - Boston (N) 94 61 .606 1.0 Cincinnati 89 65 .578 5.5 Brooklyn 76 78 .494 18.5 Chicago (N) 71 83 .461 23.5 St. Louis (N) 69 85 .448 25.5 Pittsburgh 65 89 .422 29.5 New York (N) 58 96 .377 36.5 There is certainly no love loss in the city of Philadelphia between the Phillies and A's. The Phillies have been king of the mountain for over 30 years, and the A's are still trying to shed their place as the team with the longest World Series-winning draught, which dates back to 1906. The A's won just 88 games, but the AL was very talented and they got hot when it counted. They have the 3rd best team ERA (3.59) and 4th best team batting average (.286) in the majors. The Phillies have the best team ERA (3.51) in the majors, but they have just the 10th best batting average (.277) and scored just the 10th most runs. My Prediction: The teams are very evenly matched, and both are playing well lately. The A's rotation has improved over the years, but they still are not as skilled as the Phillies' legendary front 3. The A's have a stronger lineup, while the Phillies too often relied on homeruns. They do, however, have one of the most intimidating offensive machines in major league history: catcher Willard Schwarz, who hit his amazing 50th homerun on the final day of the season. I believe the A's are a more well-balanced team, and their pitching is finally better suited to match up with the Phillies. I predict the A's get the 26-year-old monkey off their back and win in 6 games. I realize that the league is still many years away from starting, but do you have a list of potential GM's yet?

I expect the league will be ready to go live around August approximately, since I still have to sim 13 seasons... I'll be sure to let everyone know exactly how it will work when the time draws near... Also, the HOF balloting will begin in 3 seasons, so be on the lookout... The voting specifics will be revealed soon.... |

I may be interested too. I've never played a fictional league before, but this has been so detailed that it's as "real" as the historical sims. Great job Matt.

The most shocking thing is that he stole just 26 bases and was thrown out 14 times. That is by far his worst percentage, and his lowest SB total since he became a regular player for the Indians. However, he is 33 now and his ability to steal is fading. His speed is still A, but his stealing has eroded to D. He has 592 career steals, which means he is just 8 shy of becoming the 6th player in history w/ 600 steals. It's a shame he was benched for so long with the Reds, because who knows how many steals he would've had if he had played regularly in his younger years. The good news is that his .278 average is his 2nd highest in six years. Plus he scored over 100 runs for the 6th time in 8 years as an Indian. |
