Database proposition

Before I actually do this, I want to see if there's any interest in it, so I figured I'd post the idea.

Last year, I wasn't particularly happy with any of the available historical databases, so I made my own. I never posted it, but it worked like a charm and gave excellent results. It took time to make but followed a very simple standard. Here's what I basically did:

I removed players who had no AB or IP. They're useless anyway. For the remaining players, I calculated a career average for each player in all statistical categories. I then took that career average and, for each season's stats for that player, I averaged the season with his career stats.

Basically, this made rookies import much more like how the player really was. Guys who debuted with 2 AB looked much more like their career numbers. Guys that debuted with 600 AB looked more like their seasonal numbers.

Due to the time constraints of having a family and a job , this will take me a few weeks to do. Would anyone be interested if I posted this when I'm done?

Sounds great! The more resources we have for importing OOTP rosters the better. I hope you share your hard work with the rest of the community. There are plenty of people out there who I am sure will host such a database for you.

It's a great idea.

Ankit's Career Average Database is the one I use...but even it has to have player ratings edited...but it is far more accurate than the Lahman. In the Lahman some pitchers had a brilliant rating in strikeouts while batting...I think it picks up years when no stats were kept for strikeouts and rates them with "0" strikeouts, hence the 10 or Brilliant rating in OOTP5. Base stealing in the Lahman is set for percentage of steals, not quantity...A player who stole 2 out of 2 would be rated an "A", while someone who stole 40 out of 50 might be a "B".

Lahman has too many randomly assigned ratings, not based on fact, like range and arm strength. Stats are based on the year you import. No way to get career average.

I only saw a few things to adjust in Ankit's Career Database.

If you do one that doesn't require player rating adjustments, this would be a Godsend. It would really be nice to just import a player and put him on a team and not have to spend hours researching stats and adjusting ratings.

Hope you do it...I will definitely use it.

Oh, I'm definitely doing it. I just wanted to gauge interest for making it public. There would still be things to edit, unfortunately. Primarily, there would be fielding ratings, which the Lahman format just can't provide for OOTP. But I'll do my best to make that minimal.

Sounds great - I've been looking at Ankits and Lahmans for a new historical league I'm going to try in v6, but I like the sound of yours a lot!

for ankits you need to get both database he has..

1) Ankit database --is to start in any year up to 2002
2) Ankit career database- is use for importing real rookies in the offseason when ootp ask you....

there a readme and shows what he has fix from lahman database...Ankit database are the best so far i seen...

Ankit was good, but there were some things I personally didn't like that others did, such as the inclusion of two versions of players who had significant pitching and hitting careers, like Babe Ruth. I'd rather just have one guy. I also didn't like the alteration of start years. I understood the reason was that he was getting rid of guys who only had a couple of at bats in their first year and using their first significant year as the start year, but I'd rather just have everyone import in their first actual year.
