How to stop simming?

I started a new league and asked it to sim 10 years overnight. When I tried to stop it after five years, I could not. I tried Esc, Enter, Space, Right-click, etc.

How do you get the game to stop simming years?

space should stop it, but only during the season (for some reason it will not allow you to stop siming the off season)
