A player can become a minor league free agent if he is not on the major league 40-man roster and has gone through six renewable contracts. This generally consists of an initial contract (say, a guy was drafted and signed in 1998 during the ammy draft and played short season ball that year - which was then renewed six times - '99, '00, '01, '02, '03, and '04). If he's not protected on the 40 man roster at the conclusion of the 2004 season, he's can opt for free agency.
Players cut during their renewable contract period can become minor league free agents after their new contracts expire as well, if their new team doesn't elect to sign the player for the maximum number of renewable years. Here's BA's list of minor league free agents for 2002, to give you an idea about player quality. Luis Jimenez, then of Baltimore, is an example of this latter phenomenon as Baltimore originally signed him as low level roster filler after Oakland had cut him for disciplinary reasons. Accordingly, they elected to only sign him for one year (I guess that there is a cost difference in contract lengths - these deals are non-guaranteed either way). Jimenez then went out and was the best hitter in the Appalachian League, earning attention from other teams as he went into early minor league free agency. (Postscript - Baltimore re-signed him - he sucked last year - LA picked him up in the AAA Rule 5 draft, which is less expensive and restrictive than the major league version - he now is the DH for a team in slow A.) |

How does this work in game? You have a guy signed to a "minor league contract" and that's it, you don't ever really renew that.
For OOTP, is it a guy who spends 6 years in the minors, without being on the 40 man roster? So far I haven't seen this come into play at all in the game, is it implemented? |

I'm under the impression that if a player has spent parts of six years in the minors and isn't on the 40 man roster after the 6th season, he's removed from your roster and put in the free agent pool.
I haven't seen it happen yet because I haven't simmed six seasons yet. There wouldn't be any 6 year minor league free agents if you haven't simmed six seasons yet.

I haven't simmed 6 seasons yet, but I had a converted 5 league, with a guy I kept around to test this with, who'd been a minor leaguer for 7 or so. Of course, he retired rather than face free agency it seems.
