I like the the ST games idea...definitely add more realism to the experience.

I like Spring Training! I hope in future versions this feature is enhanced so that Markus includes airfare and hotels ( Scottsdale Phoenician would be just fine ), with a decent selection of games included in the package. I dont particularly care about the BBQ session with Ken Macha or Felipe Alou, but a golf option would be nice.

If ST games are going to be added, please make them optional. Playing exhibition games is the part of Front Office Football I find the biggest drag. I hate having to change my lineups around all the time to lower risk of injury to my star players. I'd just prefer to get into the real games. I see many folks want this option and that's fine. I would prefer the option to not have it.

I used to be in the ST Games are unneeded camp... but I find myself siding with Henry more and more... especially as I get more into leagues without any ratings (and hopefully in OOTP6 without talents). ST would be a nice way to get a final look at those last few roster slots.
The key though would be have the AI use ST properly, starters play a bit, but not the entire game, etc. Chances are I wouldn't want to play the ST games.. but simming them out and checking the results (assuming the AI did a good job with the lineups, etc.) would have some value too me. |

KurtBevacqua has a valid point. A new defensive position should not directly affect a players offensive abilities.
This should be looked into for future OOTP versions.

The logic in the current Spring Training is that all the time spent learning the new position during spring training takes away from the time the player could be spending on his hitting, resulting in the potential decrease.
Essentially the ST points are like "time" and there is only a finite amount of time available... so if you spend more time somewhere (like learning a new position) it's got to come at the expense of the time you would have spent working somewhere else. With this logic, I don't have much of a problem with the current you have to risk a drop somewhere to try for a gain elsewhere. |

I think that covers it all. I could live with this. I'd probably choose option 2, but it will not be easy for the AI to account for ST type of lineup changes. I suspect that would be a tough programming nut to crack. FOF always has that problem with QB playing time in exhibition games. It's very inconsistent. |

I bet there are perhaps a few people who wouldn't mind not having Spring Training IRL either...Cubs fans?

The main reason I would want spring training games is to finalize my last few roster spots. I go into each season generally knowing who my starters are going to be. What I would like is the competition for the bench spots, 5th starter, middle relievers.
The other area that I feel would add realism to the game is you could offer players a minor league deal with the invitation to spring training. This is how several players have to make a team in real life and this aspect is generally not accounted for in OOTP. I agree that spring training would only work if you could assign playing time and the AI would properly reflect that. I have no interest in playing the games I would only sim them but would like to be able to sim them a week at a time so I could modify playing time and reassign players as needed. |

I would like the game to at least generate ST stats, similar to how it generates minor league stats, w/o any injuries though. Not sure how I feel about a complete ST schedule. I wouldn't mind it, but would at least like the stats first.

![]() Actually, I already did one as a test case. I took the 1940 MLB exhibition schedule, and it was interesting in its own right. Many games had the major league teams playing minor league teams; the Cardinals and Reds played a series of games in Cuba against a team of Cuban All-Stars; and major league teams often paired up to play several exhibition games in a row (for example, the Yankees and Dodgers played each other 7 consecutive times to finish off their spring training schedule). Another aspect to it was how the teams started off in their spring training grounds, and after some time there, slowly made their way towards their home cities, playing exhibition contests in various towns along the way. |

I would like to see spring training games. I play out all my games so it would help me get used to my team before the season.
Those who sim games out would just sim them anyways. |

I think ST is not very realistic in V5. You can really convert a Jason Giambi into a Pooky Reese in 5 years, and a Mariano Rivera into a Curt Schilling..
just my $.02

Exhibition games would be great for me. Every season, it takes me about a month (game time) to get my lineup right. i would love to be able to experiment without it costing me anything in the standings.
Also, as others have stated, being able to try out prospects to see if they're ready. And sometimes, when you have to try out two mediocre players for a position. Also, because we don't play inter league games, it would be cool to play teams from the other league during spring training. |

I personally would find a more enhanced spring training very useful. I normally play with talents only as I feel it is more true to life and offers more of a challenge. Because of this the only experimentation of players that can be done is during the first month of the season which might cost me a few games. For a real life example of the importance of spring training just look at the Mets this year...
Heading into camp they said they had 4 spots of their starting rotation set (Glavine, Leiter, Trachsel, and Seo). There was an open competition for the 5th spot which included erickson, yates, roberts, baldwin, and heilman as the frontrunners. Now for the most part everyone had an equal chance of making this last spot. Without spring training how would they of picked who to take. It also ended up that Seo had such a terrible spring (over 7.00 era) that his spot was forfeited to the next best performer(erickson) behind yates(.64 era when choicen...had a bad outing after that which inflated it) who won the 5 spot. I think this is a perfect example of how important spring training can be when you have to cut a roster to 25 people and are playing with talents only. |
