Spring training is in every ootp. Spring training games is not. Which one are you asking for?

Spring training in OOTP doesn't involve any games being played. Using a point system, you can emphasize different skills for your players to focus on and get them to train at new positions. But there aren't any games/stats to look at.

I don't think spring training games really enhances the game play much...the ones that count are what I am interested in.
I think the ratings/point system works fine. |

The more important question is has the spring training interface been improved?

I'm one of those few who hopes not to see Spring Training get enhanced much. To me it's a really unimportant element in the game. Players don't really improve or get worse because of Spring Training, like they do in the game. If anything, the values we assign in ST as far as guys improving or getting worse in certain areas should be in effect throughout the year, so that over the course of the year a guy can get gradually better or worse. The only thing I can see is using ST to teach a guy a new position. The rest is questionable.

I'm not really all that "into" spring training and wouldn't vote for having to play games.
HOWEVER, I do think there is something important that gets overlooked in regards to spring training. I get the impression that the computer tends to allocate points to players in places where it believes that player has a weakness. So if a batter has a good HR rating and a low/mediocre Contract rating, the computer will allocated points to Contact. Personally, I believe this approach tends to draw many players closer to the mean over time and I'm not sure this is a good thing. I don't mind seeing a guy hit .233 with 35 homers in my league. So to me, the ability to upload spring training plans is good because I can now control the allocation for computer teams a little easier than in the past. |

I've always had issue with the way new positions are learned in ST. I don't think it's right to sacrifice a whole 5 points from batting categories to learn a new position. Batting and fielding points should be completely independent of one another. Did Robin Yount suffer a batting decline when he moved from SS to CF, did Ripken suffer moving from third to short? There should be a separate pool of hitting points and fielding points. The player should be sacrificing work on his primary fielding position to learn a new position. So a guy who might be a B SS would drop to a C or D at short in order to learn to play 2B.

i wouldn't mind having spring training games in a league where i play out all of the games. you would have the chance to try out your up and coming prospects, decide between those 3 lefties to fill out your pen, and which guys are gonna help you off the bench, etc, etc...
the main interest for realism's sake is spring training injuries. If there are games, there will be injuries, just as there are in real life. |

I agree. The least realistic aspect of OOTP is that 99% of the league is healthy and rested on opening day. Even Griffey.

I'd like to play some Spring Training games. I'm used to pre-season in games like Championship Manager and EHM and think it would help getting to know a baseball team - especially the minor leaguers.
And they could just be simmed if that's what you wanted. Or perhaps there could be an option to just the comp run through the entire ST for you. Muppetus Galacticus

First off, before this, I want a fully functional Fall Training feature where I can punish the players who failed me during the regular season. I don't think it's right they get to take a buncha time off after losing.

I would vote for full spring training games. While I don't expect players to improve during spring, it would be nice to see if my stud at AAA can handle Major League pitchers before having to waste service time. Also being able to have position battles, so you know if you can go ahead and trade a veteran or need to keep him around.
Now I hate to put stock in anything Joe Morgan says but.... he was talking on Sunday night about the difference between pitchers and batters coming out of ST. He said that pitchers really only use it to work on conditioning and building up endurance. Most pitchers can turn it on once the season starts. So when a veteran has a 7.34 ERA in ST, it doesn't really mean anything. On the other hand, batters need ST to get into the groove with hand/eye coordination and if a guy bats .212 in ST he can't just turn it on once the season starts. So that could be represented by cold and hot streaks coming into the season. Finally injuries are the most important thing. There is always a major injury in ST. Phil Nevin last year (I think) and Nixon and Garciaparra this year. Not many teams are 100% healthy to start the season and this needs to be represented. |
