Need Suggestions on how to spice up a Historical league

Hey guys, I'm in a historical league and just wanted to get some suggestions on how you spice up your leagues and get guys more interested.

We're in year 2 of our 80's league, 1981. It seems guys just don't want to trade much, complaining about depth and such, and that the overall activity level isn't quite what was expected when we started. We added several players from before 1980 into the league hoping to get past the depth problems, but it's still considered such. I think it's more likely that guys are reluctant to trade because they already know what their current players did in real life and are hoping they'll still play like that.

So, I just wanted to hear how others got their fellow owners more interested, what kinds of events, rules, innovations, etc., you do to do so.

Thanks for taking time to answer and all suggestions are appreciated

Well, it's still early in the league. I know when I'm taking over a team, I'm reluctant to trade right away because I want to get a better idea of what I've got. Your owners might be doing the same thing.

Also, unless you fill the minors, it takes (IMO) 4-5 years to really build up the farm system to where depth isn't a problem. That's probably part of the problem right there - it's hard to make a deal when both sides are creating more holes in their roster when they fill the ones they already have.

I've never really played historical sims, so I don't really have an opinion on the whole "I know Reggie did X - no way I'm trading him" sort of thing.

As far as activity goes, that ebbs and flows depending on who's got what going on. News articles and the like are nice touches, and they can stimulate some interest, although generally the guys who submit articles are the ones already most involved.

I guess my advice would be to give it some more time. You might want to consider simming more often, or simming more games per sim, to sort of speed things up.

Randomly pick 1 guy each year to KILL
Make it a guy who's been on their team at LEAST 3 seasons.

THAT'LL get trades going, nobody will want ot have a player more than 2 years then....

LOL, that one's certainly original and would provoke trading.

"Come on, Mike!!! We've only got 2 more minutes before the deadline! Dave Winfield's next on the hit list!!"

1 team picks a nubmer 1-(number of teams you have)
(you have previously assigned each team to a rondom number)

1 teams picks another number 1-9
(you have previously assigned each position a random number)

1 team picks a number 1-20
if they pick 1, the first player at that position for that team (alphabetically) dies... 2 the 2nd, etc... if they pick 5 and the team only has 3 people, then the 2nd one dies (4th = 1, 5th = 2, etc)

If the player has not been with that team more thna 2 years, go to the next player...

Makes it as random as can be, and encourages trading...
