DD 2004 MLB Facepack coming soon

this year, I'm drawing from a database consisting of all players on a 40-man roster, all non-roster invites and a few selected prospects (all as of February 1st) - a total of 1,795 players in all.

of those 1,795 players, I have currently have some sort of photo for all but 19 of them; so 98.9% of the players in spring training are in the set. I do have some more prospects to add to the database, so this coverage percentage may drop slightly.

there are 1,745 "posed" shots (97% of the total players) and 1,290 "action" shots (72% of the players).
there's still a few gaps in the action shots - mostly players who've changed teams in the offseason.

I would estimate that about 85% of the photos in this set are brand new this year. Actually, technically it's closer to 100%, as most of the photos I kept from last years version have been touched up slightly (darkness/contrast, etc). I think people who liked least year's set is really going to be happy with this year's version.

I plan to have this ready to release on Opening Day.

I am looking for a bit of honest feedback - I've been tossing around the idea of putting up a Paypal donation button on my site for people who wish to make a small donation. But a big part of me thinks that I'm just wasting my time doing it and that it's a bit tacky as well. Please feel free to weigh in on any comments you may have on this.

I don't think there is anything wrong with get some $$$ for your hard work. The money you get will be given to you freely by those who feel you deserve it. I say go for it.

Only potential issue I see with paypal is you do not own the rights to any of the photos. It could get you into hot water with someone who did own them...ie MLB or a trading card company.

I had a couple of people suggest I do paypal for my facepacks but I was advised not to by a lawyer friend of mine for this reason.

"Donations" - he would not be forcing you to pay anything, the money is for the effort not the product. He wouldn't be selling the facepacks...

What if you 'sold' a picture of yourself, and for every purchase gave out a free copy of your MLB face pack?

Seriously though, it sounds like its going to be great, and the amount of work you must put in you certainly deserve some cash for it, somehow!

glad you brought that up, because I've thought about that as well.

not only do I not own the copyrights, I haven't tracked who does (using zillions of sources)...

but I'm not sure if the donation part would change much...I could STILL very easily get nailed by the copyright holder

I am certainly not arguing that point. I know firsthand how much effort DD puts into his facepacks. I just wanted to point out a potential problem were he to accept anything for that effort.

I can guarantee if you put it up, you'll get a donation.

Which 19 are you missing?

Did you ever get Rick White? I was unable to find one with my last batch of submissions but found one today. I'm at work so I can not edit it.

I might have some portraits you can use. I was collecting them for a 2004 roster set that someone is putting together for Baseball Mogul.

Anyway, Draft Dodger we really appreciate your work. I think you have the best face packs around.
Do you know if your new facepack will be compatible with
OOTP 6 ?

thanks.
I'm pretty sure they will be compatible.
I did have a thought a couple of weeks ago that Markus would change the format, and I'd have wasted a 100+ hours for nothing...but I think it's staying the same.

I'm not a lawyer or anything. But if you put it up, it could "technically" be for your website and not for the photoset. Who is saying it is for the photoset?

Markus is likely a little busy right now but I am quite certain the facepacks will still be compatible.

Granted, but you know what they say, Better to be safe than sorry. And if he doesn't answer a PM, nothing lost by trying.

And, sorry about that DD.

Am I the only one who would find it hilarious if the format changed?
