Exclamation Garner, Bucs agree to six-year deal

The Bucs have reached an agreement in principle with former Raiders running back Charlie Garner, opting to sign Garner over the Eagles' Duce Staley.

Garner is expected to sign a six-year, $20 million contract with the Bucs that includes $4 million in up-front money. Garner was also high on the list of the Broncos, who recently traded Clinton Portis to the Redskins.

The Bucs moved quickly to reunite Garner with his former Raiders coach, Jon Gruden. They had been negotiating with Staley, who visited last week. Staley spent Monday in Pittsburgh and was in serious negotiations with the Steelers.

This will be the third team in which Garner and Gruden have worked together. Garner, 32, was considered instant offense for Gruden in Philadelphia when Gruden was offensive coordinator there. He signed with the Raiders in 2001 and spent three seasons in Oakland as a starter.

Ouch, that leaves the Raiders a starting RB tandem of Fargas and Wheatley.

I like Fargas, but don't know if he can be a 16 game back. As for Wheatley, he has the stamina of a 1400 pound bed ridden gorilla. (who has started an average of 4 games a year in his 9 year career).

Im fine with Charlie leaving. He doesnt fit the type of offense the Raiders will be running and is definitely on the downswing (yes, so are many of the current Raiders). I think Fargas and Wheatley will actually do pretty well with the Raiders run blocking ability after signing Stone. They might grab a back in the middle of this draft as well.

The Bucs are starting to turn into the Raiders east with all of the former raiders on that team. Someone needs to tell Gruden that it is alright to sign players you have not coached before.

Charlie totaled under 1000 total yards last season and is 32 years old. And age seems to catch up to RB's more than any other posiiton. He's still a very good receiving / 3rd down back however.

Please, please. . . we could use Duece.

And a right tackle.

And a few cornerbacks.

And someone to replace Gildong.

And a quarterback.

And on and on and on

I think Fargas can be as good as a back as Garner is at this stage in his career, and at just a fraction of the cost. The Raiders need to find out some answers, such as if Fargas can be the man for them, and they aren't going to find that out by leaving in older players who aren't going to be a part of their rebuilding process anyways. If Garner was still on top of his game, then yes, keep him. But at this point, may as well give Justin the ball and see what he can do with it.

Yeah i agree with ya. With the direction the Raiders are going in right now, Giving Justin Fargas a Shot is a great idea. Will Fargas be the starter? or TW?

Another whack comment from the Raydah Haytah! Fargas is not a 16 game back? Should he only play every other game? Fargas showed some pretty brilliant flashes as a rookie last year. Wheatley and Fargas and Zack Crockett make a hell-uv-a roating offensive threat.

Yes, now LB, WR, QB and S are the real problem area's for the Raiders at this point. I'm hoping we sign Ian Gold to replace Barton and maybe Deon Grant at safety.

Hey, you know Im the #1 Schroeda Hata, but I actually like Fargas. He looked good, but can he be a 16 game back? He averaged only 86 carries per year for his college career, for only 4.2 per carry. Thats what worries me. Not to mention that 4 years ago dude was a FS

He played in 14 yes, but injuries never really let him be more than a 3rd down back in the second half of the season. I wouldnt quite write off Garner yet as being finished or anything, it wouldnt surprise me to see bounce back to be a 800 yard rushing and a 800 yard receiving RB. While he is on the decline of his playing career, and its a good move for the Raiders at this point to move on, he can still be a good, productive back for a few more years for someone else.

In my ESPN insider newsletter, OAK is close to making a offer for Dillon. Maybe thats why they let Garner go...

Theres no question Garner is still an excellent pass receiver / 3rd down back.

Dillon I have mixed feelings about. He is still a very good RB who would excelt behind and excellent run blocking Raiders offensive line, but I've never been a fan of his personally. If he could be had for a 3rd rounder or less then it would be a good risk for the Raiders.
