49ers cut Jeff Garcia

As a 49ers fan I'm sad to see TO and Jeff Garcia leave in the same year, especially after Mariucci left the year before but it really seems with the cap problems in the NFL there are a lot of good quarterbacks out there at relatively cheap prices. Hopefully the 49ers will be successful in setting the groundwork for re-building and won't end up just a has been for the next 10 years. Maybe they'll even get Garcia back at a cheaper price. QB's used to be king now it seems like the days of the franchise quarterback may be dissapearing for all but the elite QB's.

From Sportsline:

After failing to work out a contract compromise, the San Francisco 49ers will release veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia on Tuesday, SportsLine.com's Jay Glazer has learned.

Garcia, a three-time Pro Bowl player and San Francisco's starter since 1999, couldn't find middle ground in a difficult contract re-negotiation with the 49ers, who wanted to heavily reduce the $9.9 million salary he was due to make next season.

The team and Garcia's agent, Steve Baker, had been haggling over several issues, including the bonuses and performance clauses in the contract. Neither side has commented on specific issues, but the 49ers intend to make a decision before a $500,000 roster bonus comes due next week.

By releasing Garcia, the Niners save $1.7 million against the salary cap. He still will count against the cap for $10.3 million next season, but he would be off the books for 2005, fitting into the 49ers' plan to get rid of all the "dead money" they owe to players no longer with the team.

Garcia's release is a sad, abrupt end to a storybook career for a local kid who got a chance to play for his favorite team while growing up in Gilroy, Calif.

Garcia passed for 2,704 yards and 18 touchdowns while battling various injuries for much of last season. He missed three games while injured -- and his longtime backup, Tim Rattay, looked sharp while going 2-1 and stoking a quarterback controversy.

After a standout collegiate career at San Jose State, Garcia was a star in the Canadian Football League, where he led the Calgary Stampeders to the Grey Cup in 1998.

Rattay, who passed for 856 yards last season, has two seasons left on the three-year, $4.8 million contract extension he signed in the fall. Ken Dorsey was the 49ers' third-string quarterback last season, and the team recently re-signed former backup QB Brandon Doman.

The first court hearing on Garcia's January arrest on DUI charges also is scheduled for Monday.

Maybe they wont be forced to trade TO after all.

Either way, the Whiners are moving closer towards my predicted path of 2004 failure.

I'm sure they'll trade him. It's bad enough having a guy who's unhappy on your team but having a TO that's unhappy? God help us!

I WISH. I'm not sure if Miami has enough cap room to have Fiedler, Griese, Feeley and Garcia ... or how much they'd save/waste by dropping someone.

But I'd welcome Garcia to Miami with open arms.

Griese has been cut and they are trying to get Fiedler to restructure his deal otherwise he may be gone too.

It's looking like AJ Feeley will be your starter in Miami.

I said a week ago that Garcia was on his way out, but no one listened to me then.

Meh. Unless the Niners do something about their offensive line, it's not going to matter who their QB is.

And if the Niners can unload TO for a late 1st round draft pick, that's great news. He can take his whiny, backbiting, balldropping act to some less-tolerant team and sulk his way into the unemployment line. I'd love to see him in Philadelphia after he drops a couple 3rd-down passes and then bitches about how he "doesn't get the ball enough" and rips into Donovan McNabb for "not leading this team." Good frickin' riddance.

That seems like it would make sense for them. I think he would excel there. Although seeing a 48er going to Dallas again would just be turning the knife.

I know...I remember when Deion Sanders did it. I think that would be like a boston player signing with New York. Turning the knife...

It's only been on the radio, tv, internet, and discussed in our office at work. Other than that, it's been a total surprise

I wonder what Dallas is willing to pay him. I know San Fran wanted to lower his salary from 10 Million to 5 MIllions. I wonder where his giving point is. 7 Million? And how many years would he get? 2 or 3 tops i assume considering he is already 34

So the 49ers are "saving" money by taking $10 million in dead money against the cap? Sounds like they're tanking this season.

I watched "Beyond the Glory: Jeff Garcia" on Fox Sports a couple of weeks ago and he has had a pretty sad life. He lost his brother/best friend when he was a child to a river and then his mother gave birth to 2 twin daughters and one died shortly after birth. I feel bad for the guy

I work with Jeff's 1st cousin. He had told me all the things their family had gone through and it has been a lot. Then I saw the BtG you mentioned.
