New user to this game
Hi there I am a new purchaser to this game and I like it. One thing though was disappointing, there is no Kirkland Lang U.K. boxer included He was one of the few men to have beaten Roberto Duran also a bit bias towards U.S. Boxers in the AI as I pitched Donald Curry against LLoyd Honeygan and Curry knocked him out easily which is way off! But some bouts are very good, anyone tried this one? Felix trinidad v Jose Napoles thats a good scrap! Has anyone git the Cd game " title fight 2001" by comp u sports? I would like to know what that one is like if I can get it. Sorry if this is a bit off topic.

Kirkland Laing
Welcome, I have attached Laings stats which are to be found on the excellent cornerwork.com. I've got a poor quality photo of him if you want, I spent ages trying to find a good photo! PS i think they had him as a boxer/slugger which I changed to boxer, any view?

Slugger! he was the most gifted boxer I ever saw, his style was unique he always boxed with hands held down and off loaded from the hip. trouble is he would get knocked out too often by a wild card punch, which I have witnessed! He was once asked what it was like to fight Duran, He said he was in the dressing room before the bout and he kept thinkin "Hands of Stone" and his knees were shaking, time he got in the ring he said if Duran blinked he was so scared he would react to it! OK thanks I will check the stats out on the site. thanks for the reply / info

Yes, Honeyghan did beat Curry IRL, but the game developers looked at the whole career when they rated the fighters, so the two are fairly evenly matched in the game, just as they were in real life. Also, just as in real life, neither was as good as his press clippings. Curry was 34-6-0 with 25 KOs for an .850 win pct. and .761 KO pct. Honeyghan was 43-5-0 with 31 KOs for an .896 win pct. and .721 KO pct. Both were champions with title defenses and gaudy reps that didn't hold up. Curry beat Brit Colin Jones, Nino LaRocca, James "Hard Rock" Green, Marlon Starling (twice), Elio Diaz, Milton McCrory, Bruce Finch, Jun Sok Hwang, Gianfranco Rossi, Lupe Aquino and Roger Stafford. He lost to Honeyghan, Terry Norris, Michael Nunn, Mike McCallum, Rene Jacquot and Emmett Linton, all champions. Only shame there is the poor performance against Jacquot. Honeyghan beat Rossi, Johnny Bumphus, Sylvester Mittee, Curry, Harold Brazier, Maurice Blocker, Gene "Mad Dog" Hatcher, Yun Kil Chung, Harold Brazier, Horace Shufford and Jorge Vaca. He lost to Starling, Vaca, Vinnie Pazienza, Mark Breland and Adrian Dodson. Losses to Dodson and Vaca are questionable, and the Starling comparison is obvious. Also, Honeyghan refused Curry a rematch, and most people had the fighters even or Curry ahead at the time of the knockout when they actually met. I would say the similar rankings are more than justified, based on the fighters' complete careers. Their achievements, records and opponents, for the most part, were very similar. I haven't done this with these two particular fighters, but many people on this forum say the way to get a good idea of rankings and individual comparisons is to fight them 100 times and compare the results. Then, if you're still not satisfied with one or the other fighter's rankings, adjust them. It's your game! Enjoy TBCB, and welcome to the forum.

I remember watching the Duran fight on 'World Of Sport', and I think he was the most surprised one there. I also remember watching 'One hundred great sporting moments' on the BBC where they showed highlights of both his bouts with Colin Jones, I would love to pick up a vid of those. Unfortunately whilst browsing the internet I read some recent stuff about him, which saddened me, I am not even sure whether or not he survived he recent 'accident'.

Point taken on your post
OK I can see now about the AI they take all result in to account Honeygan went on too long and was still in the ring way after he should have been. Yes you are right both men were hyped a bit! The vaca fights for honeygan were controversial as it was all over cuts Vaca won one fight if I remember on a count back when Honeygan was disqualified?? something like that and I THINK the 2nd fight went the same way?? not sure now. but I know they were both "dodgey"
Yes tosti it is sad about Lang, they had an article here in the newspaper a while back and he has some social problems and sits out with the wino's and vagrants. very sad. Yes he fell out of the balcony of his flat or something i think he had been drinking, but i do not know the details. I had snippets of the Jones fights on video I still have them, and a tv article on Lang and he and Jones met again they had a good laugh about the fights, Lang said to Jones that when you watch the knock downs you can see the look of shock on my face!! He is a funny guy! Jones was pleased that he had made a comeback late in his carreer but the big fights never came for him and now he is a down and out, which is wrong in this day and age. |

BTW the best fight I saw was the Duran v Leonard FIRST fight! Duran was outstanding in that fight!

Laing photo
For some reason they won't allow you to post the same image twice. But if you look in the 80's fighters thread there is one of him amongst others. Cheers

Laing was introduced to the crowd at a recent boxing show in Nottingham so he must be making a recovery from his accident.
