How nice of the Yankees to do that.
![]() Uh oh, they're making him wear unlucky #13. He's gonna suck now and break his leg in the first game of the season keeping him out the rest of the year. |

I'd have to laugh if that happened to A-Rod, even though I like the Yankees. It would just be very ironic and funny to me.

Here's a question for all you baseball geniuses out there. The players union wouldn't let A-Rod adjust his contract to fit the bill in Boston. Why couldn't A-Rod keep his contract and donate the money back to Boston? Players are donating money all the time, why couldn't A-Rod just donate money back to Boston?

Thurman Munson. Personally, I like the 13. It seems to work, for whatever reason. BTW, I think it was the guy from Baseball Primer who does the transaction oracle who said it best, that if Jeter was the captain that he seems to be in name only, he'd be carrying his ass over to second and letting the guy with the gold glove play his position. Then take the recently aquired filler and stick it at third. Personally, I think Tyler Houston's the best fit over there.

Because, if someone offered to pay you what you wanted to work for them, but then said we would like you to donate some of the money your promised back to the company to make more money, would you? If Boston had just said we'll take A-rod and his contract for what it is, then this wouldn't even be discussed today.

Texas goes on to win 20 some World Series and the Yankees don't win a World Series until 2104. Whoa, that is just weird. Not winning a World Series for 100 years.

Two other things.
I'm still curious to how Jeter reacts to all of this, and how it plays out in spring traininig. Take Gary Sheffield for whatever you will, and he's not exactly a model citizen or boy scout, but I took his offer to play third base as sincere when Boone first went down. I knew (or at least hoped) that the Yankees would pat him on the head, thank him, and ignore him, but he did make it known. Jeter should know where the depth of the team is, and how to make it best. That's what a captain can do. he wants what's best for the team, not what's best for him. What's best for the team is not A-Rod at third and Jeter at short. That, and I think that when we look back at this many years from now, I think the thing I will remember most is not the announcement, not any appearances A-Rod might make, not Larry Lucchino's bitterness, but Ben Affleck losing his mind and suffering a nervous breakdown on ESPN. I think he mentioned Kenny Lofton's name 37 times.

Sheffield played 3B, and has experience there, they would be better having someone take over 2B (Jeter/ARod) and have Williams take an Outfield spot while someone like Clark DHs?

Sheff also hasn't played third in 10 years, and even when he did, he wasn't a good one. Sheff's fielding average his last full season as a third baseman makes Mike Lamb look like Graig Nettles.
Signing Lofton wasn't necessarily one of the best moves, as his upgrade in center isn't that much of one compared to Bernie Williams. Personally, I think that the best player on the roster to man center field is going to stand in left this season, in Matsui. He played very good there last season when Bernie was hurt, and showed better range. I felt that Bernie would be good enough for left, Matsui would move over to center, Giambi could DH, and the Yanks could have signed JT Snow to man first with a one year deal. Hell, they could still sign Travis Lee right now. I don't really know why they didn't go after him or Snow (although Snow was happy in SF, I think) instead of Clark. Travis can't be asking for that much, and would have probably accepted a deal similar to that of Clark's to play for the Yanks. Or maybe not... he'd probably be signed by now if he was looking for realistic numbers.

The arms of A-Rod and Jeter are too good to play 2nd. Bernie's legs are too weak to hold up in the field. Playing DH will allow him to be more productive on offense and give his knees much needed rest.

Actually Lofton's arm is alot better than Bernie's (who has a prblem with his throwing arm) the range is about the same.
But I think it will be the 80's all over again for the Yankees, over priced past their prime stars, who underachieve. and statheadz will be scratching their heads wondering why the Yanks are getting beat by the Jays and Red Sox...too many egos on this Yankee club.

the only thing I can think of regarding A-Rod as the 3b is that he can do nothing buy help Jeter by going far to his left to get ground balls and stuff. That way George's boy looks great in the field. Both would be wasteful @ 2nd. I personally wouldn't rule out Lamb for 2b should the scrap heap guys not work out, hell George could goat Luis Sojo out of retirement again to play 2b.

How in the world can Jeter know the depths of the Yankees to determine who should be playing 3B???? The way Steinbrenner ships guys in and out of New York, Jeter will be lucky to know who his teammates are on Opening Day let alone know who would play the best 3B.
The Yanks are a joke, and the entire game of baseball is not far behind them in my opinion. |
