Question promoting from AA?

Just finished the regular season and finished first in the division for the second straight year. Got eliminated in the LCS last year, so I'm hoping to do better this time around.

During the regular season, I got in a jam with an injury to my top starting pitcher (Tim Hudson -- a real horse in this game). I was desperate since he was going to be out about five weeks.
Had nothing good at AAA and was in a tight race with the hated Yankees and Indians (I have two divisions in each league). So, I promoted a AA phenom and hoped for the best. He pitched pretty respectively, but ended up like 3 wins, 3 losses and an ERA of 4.10. Opponent batting average was about .280. At AA the ERA was in the low 2's.
After the regular season, the scouting report went from "future #1 starter" to "he can fill a hole in your rotation". I dropped him off the playoff roster and think I'll put him in AAA next year to see if he will get phenom status back.

Can you have success promoting from AA or is it always better to spend time in AAA first? Is there any hope for getting this guy to regain his once lofty promise? (he was a fairly low round draft pick originally -- I love that about this game, you actually get the low round Mike Piazza type surprises sometimes). Any help would be appreciated.

I would say there is no "hard and fast" rule. Just like in professional baseball some can make the jump and perform well, others cannot.

I say drop him to AAA for a year and see what happens. I did this with two former phenoms and one rebounded nicely and the other tanked out for two years. He was quite young though to start (18) and is only 22 now with a slowly increasing outlook. He went from a stud to horrible and is now above average. He is a free agent and wants 2 million per year and is not worth it in the least but I may bite hoping by the time he is 24 or 25 he is great again.

I brought up a 2B from AA when my starter went down and I was with out a player who could play 2B in AAA. He had an A in range but was below average offensively. In the 70+ games he played he only hit .217 but his ratings/talent both increased by the end of the year. I decided to give him a shot to be the everyday 2B the following year and he hit .278 that season. The following season his average slipped to .250 but he hit 21 HR and had about 90 run/rbi's.

He never did play in AAA and has now been my starting 2B for 5 seasons. He averages about 20 HR and 80 runs/rbi's and hits in the .270 and the best part is he only costs my team about 800K a year.

i think it depends on the player. I had Posada go down to an injury and brought up my AA Catcher. He was a great hitter in AA but struggled in his 5 weeks in the bigs hitting well below .200. he is still an average catcher as his scouting report states and i'm hopin that maybe he'll learn from the experience and be ready to come up as a full time backup next year (Castillo wants 2 million a year as a backup...he has gotta be kiddin me)

I've had success with a few mr/cl's doing this but hitters I always have to send back to AAA for at least a year.

My first round draft choice (left-handed closer) started in AA and after being promoted about mid-season ended up with less-than-3.00 ERA and knocked Danny Graves out of the closer slot. The rookie's problem is that, while he's hard to hit, when someone hit it, it goes a LOOOOONG way (2-3 rating on HR, but a 9 on hits allowed). I'll be interested to see how/if he changes in his second year.

By the way, there've been threads about certain teams always doing well in OOTP, e.g. Red Sox or Marlins I think. I've also noticed that some players (not many) always seem to stink/shine more in OOTP than in real-life. My top candidate for the "OOTP Must Hate Him" Award is Danny Graves. Anyone else ever notice anything.

I'm not complaining, it's just funny because I used to have guys in Strat-O-Matic (the card version which is how God intended that game to be played) always shined on the cards but not to the same extent in real life, e.g. Kirt Manwaring and Manny Mota.

In a career I've got going on Graves has 3.64 ERA and 195 saves, he's 32 and playing for Tampa Bay currently.

I drafted a 21 year old SP with the #1 pick in the draft. He had 2/6/6 ratings and G/G/B talent ratings. I plugged him into my #3 spot in a rotation that was very weak on pitching. He ended the season with a 4.86 ERA.

5 years later, he signed a 6 year $7 million, and won 18 games with a 2.73 ERA this past season. Never played a game in the minors.

Crap. His 6 year run as my ace is over . He just torn an elbow ligament and his career is over at age 27. Just made the all-star team with a 2.92 ERA, then was injured. Ruined my chances to make the playoffs, got to love this game .

I went through over a hundred seasons on different leagues and by and large, AAA is the way to go. You may get lucky sometimes, but the vast majority you wont. The game was made very nicely like that. And if you screw a guy up, like I have from AAA many times, he can rebound in the Majors as well as the minors, but, most of the time, if you bring him up too early, the only think you did bad was lengthen his maturity time, so he will have to spend a little more time down on the farm. The game is great like that. Just hang with it, it may take till 27 or 28 to mature, but when they do, that kick ass.
