Help making own rosters/leagues

Newbie question here:

I'm trying to do 2 things and can't figure out how to do either.

1) Make an all-time league, using the players from Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract

2) Make an all-time league, using the teams since 1903 with highest winning percentages

I do know how to import from LahmanDB, but finding playerID's for 1100 players or so seems to be a bit much.

Thanks for any help!

as far as importing the players, their IDs are the first five letters of the last name and the first two of the first name, followed by 01 (or 02, 03, etc depending how many others in history have had the same name combinations. For example, Nomar Garciaparra's ID is "Garciano01"

Use baseball-reference.com, they have all the IDs there as part of the html address.

Thanks for the tips!
I had already printed out the instructions from the historical thread. Unfortunately, I still can't do what I'm trying to do (so I'll explain more better)
I want to pit the 1998 Yankees against the 86 Mets against the 1906 Cubs against the 54 Indians and 46 REd Sox, etc.

I'm trying to use Ankit's Normalized DB, so I can play in the modern era with the deadball era ratings already "updated".

How can I import those different teams (I'm thinking there will be a problem with team names, as I'm wanting to use the 27,39,61, and 98 Yankees, as well as a couple of other teams from different years)

I have never done anything like this so I can't help too much, but I belive if you import the year you want from whichever database you are using you can then use Pierre's player/team imorter to import which ever team you want to the new league.

you can get pierre's utility @ http://www.tresclub.com/downloads/downloads.htm

Can't you just import each team by using the Build Custom league function already built into OOTP5? I'm pretty sure I've done that.....of course I've runs sp many solo leagues that my memory may be wrong.

I'm a little fuzzy on this, too...but I think you can import entire teams in the Custom League mode.

I seem to remember you were given the option to do this when I was setting up a custom league.

yep, go to league setup menu and choose import team (button above the actual league setup of teams on the screen). It will prompt you for the year, then the team. The team will be imported with the year in their name so to avoid confusion.

Just wanted to let you know that Spanky's Legends League will soon be available for just this same purpose. I have been working on it for months or for many 100's of hours. It will save everybody a bunch of time and grief. Read my posts under "Updates - Legends League" if your interested in learning more. I'm including 2003 players now and have just a little more editing to do before its done.
