Question about salary
In OOTP, are the asking salaries of the players relative to one another? or are they based purely on ratings and stats only?
For example - let's say that the average 3-gold-star CF in my online league makes $5 million per year on average. Suppose one owner signs one of these CF's during free agency and pays him (for whatever reason) $15 million a season. Will the other CF's in the league now look at this huge contract and now start demanding more money during free agency or when their contracts expire? Or are the asking prices based purely on a ratings/stats combo and not on other player contracts? Also, do talent ratings ever come into play in the asking price? especially if the ratings for those talents have not yet been realized? Thanks in advance. |

I don't think salaries are affected that much by what other players make, at least once the player is a free agent. but it might have some small effect.
I know salary demands have to do with both stats and ratings because I have a player who is rated higher than his stats would indicate, and he always wanted more money than I thought was reasonable, but now he's really struggling and took less $$$ for an extension.

I would say that extension and free agent demands are only affected by stats, ratings, and primary position initially.

Salaries of other players with similar ratings have a definite effect on contract demands, but probably not in an isolated incident such as the scenario of first post. There would need to be a good number of players with those $15 million contracts.
Demands can also be somewhat based on the player's current salary, assuming that he has not experienced a significant decline or improvement. For example, in an online league, I signed 3.5-star Jarrod Washburn to a 1-year deal worth $15,250,000 (I had a bunch of extra money to spend but only needed an SP). My idea was to overpay for just one year, outbidding the other teams whose offers were approximately topped out at $9 million per year for 5 years. Then I would lock him up long-term to a much more reasonable contract extension, and wind up saving money in the long run. Instead, he's now asking $17,050,000 per year for 7 years! Needless to say, that guy is walking. |

Yep, that's right. Still, I think there are too many young players accepting one-year deals like the one you posted above instead of going for the $45-million guaranteed offer. How old was Washburn?
